It was a year of re-devcolpment, of re-organization, and of overall re- construction of what has been a long-standing JUS tradition. The new Bugle featured more than dou- ble the number of pages J HS readers had been used to, but perhaps more important than the quantity was the quality of the pages. The Bugle not only ran news, human interest, and sports stories, but also included stu- dent surveys, letters to the editor, contests, a student news wire service from Washington, as well as a whole host of other features. The result? The Bulge was a newspa- per JUS could be rightly proud of, not only because it served the stu- dent body in a manner which encour- aged direct involvement in school and community issues, but also be- cause it was both informative and entertaining. When asked how the team lookd as com- pared with teams in past years. Coach Clawson said that the team was very competitive. The coach found no individual greater than the team as a whole, f ootball he staled, is a team effort. Mr. Clawson was as- sisted in the coaching ranks by Gary Eagan. .I T. They advanced to the second round of the sectionals before being ousted by Taconic Hills 1-0. The Lady Bills were lead by senior tri-captains Stacie Dunlap, Tiffani Podolcc. and Barbara Ruggcri. The three leading scorers were Karen Vacck, Mary Hayes, and Jane Can- izzo. The highlights of the season were: creaming Quecnsbury, to whom they lost to during the first scries: the home game under the lights against Gloversville; being able to win two games in one day by finishing a game that was earlier called after regulation time due to the weather; and breaking the team scenic record by running 16 scen- ics, which is approximately 5.5 miles before practice. Coach Willey could often be heard saying such dreaded statements as, Single file!”, On the end line!” or You're going to be running 'til the sun comes down, to which he added Pursuit-of-cxccl- lencc sayings at every practice. Two of the most common were, W'inners arc made, not born and “You can always belter your best! To keep themselves pumped up and to relieve pressure the girls' favorite chants were Team Scream! Since there were no seniors on this year’s team, everyone should be returning for next year's season. Despite a losing season, the team main- tained a consistent positive attitude which resulted in some seasonal highlights such as Lisa Feibka’s victory over her heavily favored Glens Falls opponent. For her top- team play, Feibka was awarded the team’s Most Valuable Player. At the helm of the squad was Mr. Ron Beck, JHS So- cial Studies teacher. Coach Beck in- dicated that winning as many games as the team did during the first year of its existence was a major acom- plishment. Fielding a team that saw 29 players begin practice on August 20 and end their season on October 29 with a 6-0 win over Schoharie was also a significant accomplishment. Mr. Beck noted that with each pass- ing game, the players improved and became more and more fundamen- tally sound. With good points of a season, there must also sometimes come bad points. Inexperience ham- pered the team. Their weaknesses showed through because there was a mix of players with different abili- ties. Mr. Becks’s outlook on next year’s season is one of optimism as the team moves to varsity competi- tion. “Our hands will be full,” stated Beck. One player, junior Tom Oughton, expected a little more from the team, but was satisfied at the end of the season. “The team showed lots of improvement,” said Oughton. Ju- nior Dave D’Amore thought the team did much better than anyone expected. He also added that Mr. Beck was very enthusiastic and never got down. Athletic Director Jack Dunlap commented that soccer was slow in coming to JHS because to have a program, there have to be interested students. The main push to get soccer at JHS came from the players themselves. Mr. Dunlap add- ed that the reason for such a long wait was also due to lack of funding and appropriate facilities. 129 130 Ski team takes advantage of record snow Winter Wonders SKI TEAM: Row I: J. To the merchants of Johnstown and Gloversville who supported our advertis- ing campaign so generously, our many thanks. To the Leader Herald whose pho- tographs supplemented ours, a special note of grati- tude. And many thanks to our “scribe,” Mrs. Piazza. But it was the persistent ef- forts of the staff and advi- sors which transformed lists of names and hundreds of photographs into a year- book. They worked late into night after night singing to the tunes, braving the at- tacks of Milton, enduring the typewriter’s broken margin, virtually memoriz- ing the quotebook, and “fetching” for the advisors who wish to offer a special thanks to the inventor of coffee.
