Leav- ing New York on a snowy spring day, they arrived in Munich to find 80 degree weather. The tour cov- ered the sights of Munich, including the Olympic Village, Nymphenburg Palace, and HofbrSuhaus. Salzburg included a trip to the saltmines in costume, and a side trip to Berch- tesgaden--Hitler's retreat. Eyes popped at Mad King Ludwig’s cas- tles in the Tirol. The trip concluded with a mad shopping spree in the Black Forest. All left laden with cuckoo clocks, steins and Hummel Figurines. April In Paris From a typical April blizzard in Johns- town to warm, sunny France; that's how it was for the JHS group that went to France last spring. The trip was fun, fast-moving and tres fantastique ! It started with a bus ride to Kennedy, then a seven hour plane trip to Paris. The beautiful chateaux at the Loire River Val- ley such as Chenenceau, Chambord, et Valan- cay came first in the excursion. Next came Mont Saint Michele and Saint Hale. Later, they went on to three glorious days in Paris to Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, Arc d'Triumph, and the Louve. All will remember the French meals, long bus rides, tour of a wine cave, and the rushed shopping sprees. There was so much to see and to remember. 41 THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK The Diary of Anne Frank was presented as last year's senior play. After a slow start, it turned out to be one of the best ever produced. Directed by Mrs. Rosanne Melita, it earned excellent reviews. Anne tells the story during the Nazi reign of ter- ror in Amsterdam, Holland. Despite the horror and their humilation, these people never gave up. The main characters were Mr. Frank: Jerold Hock, Miep: Amy Schreivogl and Charlotte Moore, Mrs. VanDaan: Lor- raine Carleo, Mr. VanDaan: Christopher Foss, Peter VanDaan: Gary Bender, Mrs. Frank: Ute Moeninghoff, Margot Frank: Irene Pappis, Anne Frank: Mary Tlusta, Mr. Kraler: Andrew Griffith and Ronald Miller, Mr. Dus- sell: Theodore Cross, Mous- chi: Missy Mazur. A little bit of the Irish was brought to J. H. S. in the J.H.S. musical department's production of FINIAN'S RAIN- BOW. It was full of leprachauns and old Irish superstitions. The musical was basically the story of an old man, Finian, played by Brian Oles, and, his daugh- ter, Sharon, played by Shawn Cleland, who came to the mu- sical land of Missitucky in hopes of becoming rich by planting a pot of gold stolen from the leprachaun, Og, played by Warren May. Sharon falls in love with the local hero, Woody, played by Tom Hart. High points of the play were the marriage of Sharon and Woody and the Begat and Necessity music numbers. 45 JHS “ANSWERS PLEASE” TEAM HAS AN UNDEFEATED SEASON Team members were Jeff Sackett, Joanne Barker, Janet Chamey, and Ted Cross. Cross Country team, coached by Raymond Purcell, ran through the season with a fine record, once again. The overall record was 4-4; while the Central Valley Conference record was 3-3. Howie Olmstead was voted most valuable player; while Todd Rulison was voted by the team as most dedicated. Not only did the team finish well in the conference, but those who went to the state meet did well also. In the three big meets of the season (Lake Placid, Tbpper Lake, and the Ah- eam Memorial), both teams fin- ished second in a team field of 13. In the Aheam Memorial, Melly and Melanie took first and second in cross country, with Melanie also second in giant slalom. Jimmy Stewart took second in cross coun- try, with Ron Stock in third place. Jim was also third in slalom. In section II racing, Johnstown won 4 out of 5. Most valuable skiers were Jim Stewart and Melanie Kline; most dedicated: Ron Stock and Car- ol Ringanese. Next year's team is looking forward to as much snow and success. 71 Varsity In Three Way Tie For Championship X-L in '75 --Those were Coach Dunlap's words about this year's varsity hoopsters, led by co-captains Bill Steen - burgh and Paul Talbot. A game like home- Frankfurt (90-48) illustrates the point. The sea- son was exciting with game point average of 63 while hold- ing opponents to 60 points. We tied three ways with Mo- hawk and JFK for CVC title, after a shattered backboard and an exciting game. Spectators could anciti- pate outstanding teamwork, making it hard to single out in- dividuals. Most valuable play- er was Howie Olm stead and Bill Monnat most dedicated. While Howie, Tim, Paul, and Mike racked up most of the points, there were steals from Todd and Bill Monnat with rebound- ing by Paul, Howie, and Tim who dominated defense in the news columns. There were also some exceptional plays put forth from the bencn. past break and fullcourt press be- came noticeable strategies for fans to look for and the com- petition to dread. The members of the team are as follows; ROW 1: B. Bentley, M. Kingman, B. Steenburgh, P. Talbot H. Olmstead, T. McGuire, P. VanSlyke. ROW 2: Coach J. Dunlap, E. Conroy, (Asst. Manager), R White, M. V. team, coached by Mr. Preco- pio, is one of the finest J. V. teams J. H. S. has had in a long time. The team was led by the shooting of Marty Hladik, Bill Subik, and Terry Dawson, with Chuck Guzielek put- ting forth an outstanding perform- ance of over 350 points for the sea- son. The team averaged points, while holding its opponents to points through the dazzling defense of Chuck, Terry, Pat, Bill, and Marty who pulled down the re- bounds, along with some good sup- port from the bench. We look for- ward to good Johnstown basketball next year. The members of the team are as follows: ROW ONE: M. VanDeusen, J. Hollar, G. Sackett, P. Cleland, V. Gifford, B. Subik, M. Hladik, Manager B. This year’s girls' basketball team had an overall record of 10-1. The champion team was led by its Most Valuable Players, Kathy Swatt and Mary Ann Wil- son. Elaine Ruhl was voted Most Dedicated; while Sue Kovarik was Best All-Around, and Marcia Brunetto was chosen as Best De- fensive Player. Each girl on the team helped to attain the' game point average of 45 points, while holding opponents to 20 points. Mrs. Joan Colvin should be proud of her champion J. V. and Varsity teams. JHS wrestlers ended the season with a 9-6 record overall and a 4-2 conference record. The grapplers defeated GHS this year by a score of 34-15 making the num- ber of victories for each team since 1967 four each. Outstanding wrestlers were Kurt John- son, with a 19-1-1 record, Don Biron who had a 17-3-1 record and John Mrha with 16-5. Johnson also received the MVP tro- phy at the Shenendehowa Tournament and at the Central Valley Conference Tour- nament. The most points scored in a regu- lar season was 105, by Johnson. Biron and Bill Gillen followed him with 78 and 71 points respectively. Chuck Thompson had the fastest pin this year, 19 seconds, the record being 12 seconds. Johnson holds the record for most points scored in one match, 32 and the most pins in a season, 13. Gil- len had 10 pins for the year, followed by Biron and McMillan with 7 each. Most Valuable wrestler was Kurt John- son, while Don Biron was most dedicated, and John Mrha the most improved. An added attraction to wrestling this year was the Matmaids , a group of four- teen girls. They helped promote wrestling by making signs, keeping score, announc- ing, running a concession stand at matches, and holding bake sales. FIRST ROW: W. Gillen, T. Getwright, A. Snell, H. Lead. 83 The record of the Sir Bills Swim Team, led by co-captains Bill Suchy and Rick Mulvey, didn't improve in terms of wins and los- ses; it did, however, improve greatly over last year's team, re- flected in the closeness of meets. For example, in the meet against Canajohairie, J.H. S. was defeated by only an eight point difference. The team is hoping that next year, Coach Tom Perillo will be back to help build a stronger, more powerful team, especially with the prospect of a new pool. This year's team had good per- formances, especially from Coen Hupkes, who is the only four-year veteran. He led the team in num- ber of first places and individual points. Coen Hupkeoi was named most valuable, and Bill Suchy was most dedicated. Members of the team are: ROW 1: JL. Empie, N. Baird, H. Belknap, A. Duffy, P. Lindenburger. ROW 2: R. Mulvey, J. Orlosky, P. Coughlin. ROW 3: J. Cieply, R. Hupkes, S. Otruba, G. Piccola, B. Suchy, T. Dalmata, W. Burke, M. Zilka, Manager-B. Thomas. 84 Beams, Bars, And Back-bending The old cliche-good things come in small packages certainly applies to this year's gymnastics team of nine girls coached by Diane Stackwick and captained by Ethel Harrington. The team makes up for size in hard work, experience, and members with multiple skills. They've been league champions for three years with hopes, at this writing, of capturing their fourth trophy. The four experienced mem- bers-Ethel, Karen, Nancy, and Chris-all contribute in more than one skill. 86 Members were: Coach D. Stackwick, K. Brown, E. Har- rington, L. Molyneux, N. Ralbovsky. Beat is here on the American Field Service Program under the sponsorship of the newly formed A.F.S. chapter in Johns- town. This is the first time J.H.S. has had a student spend a full school year under this program. Having had only two school years of English, he had some difficulty communi- cating at first. He says that people have been very patient and helpful so that it's no longer much of a problem. As a senior this year. Beat will gradu- ate with the Class of '75. His courses in- clude American History, consumer ed, speech, English 12, regents chemistry, band, and health. He finds history and con- 'yo __________ sumejr ed the most interestmg and informa- tive for him. When he returns to Chur, Beat has two more years of school before going on to the university, but he hopes to be able to skip the year he missed by being here. Beat has adjusted to life at J.H.S. He is involved in several school clubs and activi- ties including student council, chorus, in- ternational club, band table tennis team. Being quite a sports fan, he attends most basketball games and wrestling matches. Football and basketball are his favorite American sports. He also keeps busy giving talks and slide shows to inform local groups, such as Rotary Club and the Friends of the Library. 145 146 COMPLIMENTS OF GILLMORE OIL COMPANY INC. 208 NORTH PERRY ST. There are the usual day to day problems that occur whenever there is a large group of people in one place, but many of the tensions found in other schools are absent. This lack of uneasi- ness, coupled with open communication between students and teachers creates a re- laxed atmosphere where the great majority of student energy is used constructively. No matter what a person's opinion is, the first thing that comes to mind in connec- tion with J. H. S. is sports. The sports program here is outstanding. Its success is the result of dedication by those involved--coaches and players--and an unusual amount of support from the community. There are annually a number of champion teams from J. H. S., and the number is increasing. There is though, an uneven treatment of all the different sports. While the teams with more public support--football, basketball, and more recently wrestling--are draw- ing the crowds, brands of competition equally exciting and, well-executed continue in the periphery. Johnstown’s girls' sports teams are a dominant force in the conference. Other sports such as swimming, cross country, tennis, gymnastics and many others lack the support they deserve. In a larger scope, there is much more than sports. There are many other organiza- tions accomplishing as much which are just as important as any athletic program. There are activities which make use of individual talents-music in band or chorus, dramatics in the school play or musical, creative writing and photography in the BUGLE or BARO- NET. There are school and community activities also. Student Council, Tri-Hi-Y, or tutoring at the Lexington Center can give students experience in working with and for other people. The best way to improve any of these groups is from the inside; become involved and change what you don't like. This is the challenge--get in; put in some action other than talking, and improve what people have done before. Finally and personally, this yearbook is our contribution. We realize this book will come in for its share of criticism, but the sources of the criticism are hard to take seriously. Undoubtedly, those who criticize the loudest were not among the 20 people who chose to join the BARONET staff and work, and our thanks go to the people who did. We've tried to get away from emphasizing any particular group or team, while ig- noring the others. The individual person is the most important focal point here. The intended feeling is that of separate people who made up the past year at J. H. S. We have decided against trying to dedicate this yearbook, and in effect, this year to any single person. With this in mind, the book is dedicated specifically to the individuals--student and faculty--who were J.H.S. in 1974-1975, and generally to the idea of maintaining individuality in a structured system. 178 Special thanks to--Rev. Woody Carey and his steeple, Mr. William Weldner and the Photography Club, Bob Cinelli, and Mr. Mike Ringanese. Very special thanks to Mr. Mrs. Bordwell for being part of the insanity it took to put this book together.
