Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1959 volume:

foreword We, the Annual Staff, are proud to pre- sent to you our 1959 BARONET. This book has caught glimpses here and there, so that in years to come the activities of this school year at Johnstown High School will not be dimmed and will not fade from memory. In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, sor- rows, and dreams of '59, we shall be con- tent, knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do. Baronet Staff Kathleen Osborne, Editor Dedicatum We the Senior Class of 1959 ded- icate this, the Baronet, with all the respect and admiration due her, to Miss Ruth Van Dusen in apprecia- tion of the time, interest, considera- tion, and thought she has extended in the interest of the Senior Class throughout the past three years. She will always remain in our memory and our gratitude cannot be expressed in words. ..tofi ?: ‘v. V ’ •'• . ' • WE NEED LEADERS The world has always needed both leaders and followers, but good leaders are always in the greatest demand. Each member of the graduating class has the ability of becoming a leader in community affairs, in his class in college, or in business. It is unfortunate that so many persons do not take advantage of their opportunities. What does a leader do? He devotes himself to some worthy cause, and seeks to bring to his followers the warmth and glow of a dream of an improved school or community. How does he do it? By devotion to an ideal, .and by clear plan- ning of the various steps necessary to accomplish a worthy goal. The first test of a leader is: Can I put the common good above my own interests? If the members of the graduating class can pass this first test of leadership, they are well on the road to true leader- ship in our society. t ' ' • • v -.tat? Eugene F. Conant Superintendent of Schools § . • ' •Wflwate ';. ri'Y -. ■' •, TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1959: It is undoubtedly difficult for many of you to realize that you are about to complete one of the courses meeting the requirements for graduation from your Alma Mater and that soon you will be assuming responsibilities of a difficult nature. Whether you attend a liberal arts college, an engineering school, a teachers' college, a technical institute, enter the armed forces, or join the ranks of the employed after graduation, it is the cherished hope of your instructors that the training which you have received in the Johnstown schools will be of real value to you in adjusting your- selves to your future roles in society. We trust that each of you by making the fullest use of the lessons which you have learned in home, church and school will be enabled to take positions of responsibility and render service to the communi- ties with which you are associated. The opportunities for persevering young people of character are unlimited. The rapidly changing frontiers in science and industry will continue and vast new enterprises will result. Please remember that although our supervision over you terminates with graduation our interest in your progress will ever continue. sir Altna Mater All hail to the Johnstown High With her banner of Purple and Gold As long as that banner shall fly Our hearts shall be wrapped in its folds Good comrades we e'er shall remain Prepared to protect her from all peril, To keep from her memory all stain Hereby we pledge devotion to the Johnstown High School. When school days have come to an end And at last we must bid you goodbye Still, still our best efforts we'll lend To keep that bright banner high. Though dishonor and shame may be rife They've no power over loyalty's bright rule And through every storm and every strife Shall shine for aye the banner gay of Johnstown High School. Then here's to the Johnstown High May she ever in dignity stand, Her students, as in years gone by United in heart and hand. PRESIDENT................Donald Hespelt SECRETARY...............Velma Matousek VICE PRESIDENT - --------David Stevens TREASURER------------Henry Michaelson The Class of 1959 broke school history by being the first class ever to elect the same officers for its entire stay at Johnstown High School. President Don Hespelt led them for three success- ful and memorable years. He was assisted by Vice President David Stevens and by Velma Ma- tousek, who kept the minutes of all meetings. Hank Michaelson was a very obliging and ca- pable Treasurer. Our football team operated around a nucleus of Seniors. They are: Keaveney, Patterson, Ja- cobitz, Stevens, Grandy, Ondriska, Steenburgh, Whittingham, Maderic, Shoop, Vacek, Hes- pelt, Hamm, Riska, Ruggeri, Connolly, and Simone. Also, Pete Leveille, Ron Jacobitz, Charley Ruggeri, Dick Sammons, Hank Michaelson, and John Nethaway were members of the varsity basketball squad. Cheerleaders were led by Eileen Kuehnel; she was supported by Stephanie Ralbovsky, Judy Moran, Corinne Ten Eyck and Karen Lake. Since it is the end of their Senior year, the Class of 1959 expresses its thanks to Mrs. Edith B. Dunlap, Class Advisor and Senior Play Director. We all feel she did a tremendous job in mak- ing our years at Johnstown High School memorable ones. (fumor Prom May 10. Janet Con- nolly was chosen to assist him as Vice President along with Elaine Grandy who kept the records in excellent order. Joel Brunetto was elected custodian of the Treasury. Many of the Juniors participated in the various sports of our school. Robare, Bellinger, Wright, and MacFadden were valuable assets to the football team. Bill Wilson, Vic Sammons and Chuck Wright greatly assisted the Basketball team, just to name a few. John Knipler was one of the Juniors starring on the Track team. Joanna Siedlecki cheered the Varsity on with vim and vigor. Captain Nancy Granetz and Rosemarie Kosik led the cheers on the JV team. We must not overlook their scholastic achievements. Forty-five of their students were on the honor roll and they hope to improve in the future. All in all, they have really enjoyed their Junior year and are looking forward with eagerness to their last year at JHS. Sophomore Class Officers FIRST ROW, left to right: C. Conroy, J. As President they elected Jim Schelle, with Nancy Smrtic to assist; Carol Conroy to keep track of their achievements, while the money was entrusted to Linda Smith. As a class, the Sophomores have done little, but individually they have accomplished great feats. In athletics a number of the class members have been outstanding. Jim Schelle and Dave Hesek carried the football down the field for JHS and Lionel Whittingham was Captain of the Junior Varsity basketball squad. Hank Fudger served on the Cross Country team. Sports is not the only field in which the Class of '61 was outstanding. Judy Bedford has repre- sented them well in the musical field with her nine medals streaming from her band uniform. Also many of the Sophomores had the honor of making the honor roll. So now. as they look forward eagerly to their Junior year, they are well satisfied with their past record. That is why the National Honor Society exists. This year ten boys and nineteen girls were given the honor of becoming members of this organization. To date, there have been 191 boys and 312 girls - or 503 members of the Johns- town Chaper of the Society since 1933. These boys and girls have worked hard during their years at Johnstown High School and through the National Honor Society they are given the recognition they deserve. We regret that no picture of the officers of the Society was available since they were elect- ed later in the school year. Student Council FIRST ROW, left to right; J. Connolly. J. Suchy, N. With the assistance of Mr. Charles von Nostitz and the co- operation of Kathy’s staff, we know this is the best yearbook ever. Johann Di Caprio, our all-important Photography Editor; Carol Miller and Barbara Kollar, Literary Editors; Deanna Duffy, Business Manager; Joan Cirillo, Subscription Editor; Barbara Hesek, Ad- vertising Editor; Faye Saltsman, Art Editor; Agatha Fiorvanti, Production Editor; and Joan Nou, Circu- lation Manager, all helped to make this a successful year for the Baronet. All of the girls who dressed in those fantastic cos- tumes on initiation night and received their ribbons at formal initiation will remember the years when they were a part of the Girls' Hi-Y. Under the di- rection of Miss Brown, who ably assisted them, the girls participated in many activities. Some of them were food sales, serving at banquets, and collecting for the Community Chest. The Hi-Y accomplished many things this year under its capable President, Cathy Grecco. One of those things was the choosing of a name - Sir Bill's Tri Hi-Y. Janet Connolly served as Vice President, Velma Matousek took notes as Secretary and Nancy Oliver took care of the money. Other officers are: Karen Lake, Sergeant- at-Arms; Kathy Osborne, Chaplain; and Vincy Rug- geri, Reporter. %oys’ Mi y Left to right: R. Toussaint, J. Knipler, M. Riska, F. Maderic, J. Simone, A. The Boys’ Hi-Y certainly deserves a place in our yearbook, even though it is a comparatively new organization. This year its main project was in- creasing membership. Mike Riska proved himself a good choice as President. The Vice President is Joe Simone. These boys meet at the Y.M.C.A. and they have had some wonderful times together. They will always remember the witty comments of the President as he tried to conduct the first meeting of the year. The boys who joined this club will always remember the fun they had when they were members of the Boys’ Hi-Y. friendship Club FIRST ROW. left to right: N. Granetz, C. Ten Eyck. R. Kosik, S. Tennant. She conducted the meetings with the assistance of the Vice President, Judy Mo- ran. Other officers were; Secretary, Sue Tennant; Treasurer, Carol Miller; and Program Chairman, Stephanie Ralbovsky. This club has been active for thirty-two years. It originated in the Presbyterian Church but it is now open to members of all faiths. At present there are forty members and they meet every other Tuesday at the homes of the members. The club has many annual activities such as a Tea, Mother and Daughter Banquet, and acting as Santa Claus to needy children. Other Committee Chair- men are; Mary Luther, Corinne Ten Eyck, and Julie Sarno. Also, this year Mrs. Cecile Pulsifer became the assistant advisor. Key Club FIRST ROW. left to right: J. MacFadden, C. Another comparatively new organization in JHS is the Key Club. It is a national club sponsored by the Kiwanis. Its main aim is to give the boys experience in living and working together. The advisor is Mr. Subik. The officers are: President, John Kiffney; Vice President, Don Bellinger; and Treasurer, Chuck Ahearn. Key Club's high aims and ideals give it a right to a place high on the list of activities in JHS. This year the club sponsored a dance which proved to be one of the most successful record hops, featur- ing WTRY’s disc jockey, Paul James. We are sure that as the years go by, the Key Club will become one of the most important organizations in Johns- town High School. Jrench FIRST ROW, left to right: J. Wormuth, J. Ralbovsky, J. This group, consisting of second and third year French students, elected Kathy Leffel as Mile, la Presidente, as Mile, la Vice Presidente, and Karen Lake as Mile, la Secretaire-Tresorieuse. The Club uses a tape recorder, and in addition, the members presented skits, plays, and songs. French movies and fine French dishes were enjoyed through- out the year. The Debating Club is another of the clubs which has a definite value to its members. It teaches them to discuss current problems as well as any subject about which there is a controversy. They learn to speak clearly and intelligently. This year the Debating Club took part in many debating contests and they won a major part of them. Robert Bunner was elected President, Henry Michaelson was chosen Vice Presi- dent, Joyce Ragusa was the Secretary, and Mary Rug- geri served as Treasurer. From being a member of the Debating Club, these students have learned how to secure information and how to present it in a way which is strong, yet interesting. It also builds self- confidence because when you have won a debate you have really accomplished something. It is a very rewarding organization to be a member of and any student who has participated in debates will agree. Juture Zeae tiers of America FIRST ROW, left to right: B. Kowalski, M. Kane, J. The F.T.A. is one of our most worthwhile organi- zations. It prepares those students who are interested in teaching as a career for the problems they will have to solve as a teacher. They hold panel discus- sions with teachers which gives them a chance to find out what teaching is really like. Advised by Mrs. Lorence, the F.T.A. had a particularly suc- cessful season. With Don Siver as President. Janet Connolly as Vice President. Johann Di Caprio as Secretary, and Diane DeGaro as Treasurer, the F.T.A. proved its worth. It made money through record hops which were always fun for all. booster Club FIRST ROW: K. Entelisano, L. Kuehnel, N. Grantez, C. Contoy. R. Kosik. SECOND ROW: L. Ortell, J. Ruggeri, N. Smrtic, B. They have helped the cheerleaders in a Bake Sale so that the cheerleaders could get sweaters, made decorations for the games, and have been a big help to spark the boys to victories. Their President is Joyce Ragusa, Linda Smith, Vice President; Elaine Grandy, Secretary. According to members of the athletic teams, it really means a lot to them to have someone supporting them when they are playing. Al- so, they said it is really comforting to know that your fellow students stick with you - even when you are be- hind. We hope that this organization will continue to grow in future years at Johnstown High and that each year will be as successful as the Booster Club proved to be in the 1958-1959 athletic seasons. During the half-time at all of the football games at home, the Johnstown High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Wroble, entertained the spectators with marches while the twirlers and marchers exe- cuted their various routines. Also, the Band entertained the students of High School with an assembly program. Highlighting this presentation was Eric Steenburgh, who portrayed Dangerous Dan McGrew. ’’ At the right is a snapshot of the Seniors in the Band - Andrea Christman and John Nethaway. Missing when the picture was taken is Eric Steenburgh, (alias, Dan McGrew). Zwirlers FIRST ROW, left to right: C. Cellary, J. Wormuth, K. Wroble, J. Cirillo, L. Ortell, D. Duffy, J. Ralbovsky, J. Much of the credit goes to Joan Cirillo, head majorette, who without the aid of a faculty advisor, trained these girls into a well-balanced group and one much ad- mired for its half-time show. We are all extremely proud of this group of girls and we know they will long be remembered at Johnstown High School in future years. This year the group was enlarged to a much fuller and better balanced organization. Again, we congratulate Joan Cirillo for the excellent job she did for her school. Marchers FIRST ROW, left to right: M. Pagano, J. Turrisi, R. Kowalski, L. Russo, L. Zinter, C. Pinaha, S. La Rowe. SECOND ROW: B. Blake, D. Swanson, N. McCormack, M. Ermie, M. Ebert, L. They made use of shakeroos and purple and gold flags - all combined to make a very entertain- ing half-time presentation. Since these girls will soon be twirlers, the experience they gain as march- ers will be invaluable to them. We are sure they will carry on the wonderful work which they have begun as Marchers. {Junior Red Cross FIRST ROW, left to right: R. Cappello, C. Gros, J. Weller, N. Oliver, V. Matousek, B. Kollar, S. Under the lead- ership of Mrs. Saunders, the Junior Red Cross contrib- uted both their time and efforts to many needy causes. It sponsored many record hops last year to raise money and also put on a skit last fall to show the many ac- tivities of the organization. The officers of this club are: President, Nancy Oliver; Vice President, Velma Matousek; Secretary, Jean Weller; and Treasurer, Barbara Kollar. These people who have given up their time and effort in this organization should cer- tainly be admired for the fine work they have done. The Junior Red Cross is an organization which does a tremendous job in helping people in other parts of the world. One of its projects is to fill boxes of ar- ticles which are useful and practical and send them to underprivileged persons in all pans of the world. football FIRST ROW, left to right: T. Russo, M. The 1958 football squad can really be proud of the job they did for the glory of Johnstown High School. At each game, they not only showed good football tactics, but good sportsmanship as well. Al- though we took a few defeats, it is not who won the game that is im- portant, it's how the game was played. Also deserving credit, is the Junior Varsity football squad which came through with flying colors and an undefeated season. We are sure that in the coming years these boys will be bringing honor and glory to the Purple and Gold during the football season. Varsity basketball FIRST ROW, left to right: J. Kiffney, H.
