KVQQQ 71' afar All hail to the Johnstown High With her banner of Purple and Gold As long as that banner shall fly Our hearts shall be wrapped in its folds Good comrades we e'er shall remain Prepared to protect her from all peril, To keep from her memory all stain Hereby we pledge devotion to the Johnstown High School. When school days have come to an end And at last we must bid you goodbye Still, still our best efforts we'll lend To keep that bright banner high. Though dishonor and shame may be rife They've no power over 1oyalty's bright rule And through every storm and every strife Shall shine for aye the banner gay of Johnstown High School. Then here's to the Johnstown High May she ever in dignity stand, Her students, as in years gone by United in heart and hand. May her halls ever ring to the tread Of defenders - as gallant and as bold As those in the days that now have sped, Who were an honor to the Purple and the Gold!

5 5 ow' Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. During the past year the United States has been concerned about its apparent shortage of trained scientists, due to the fact that the U, S, S, R, successfully launched the first earth satellites, The succeeding events were not difficult to anticipate: In efforts to reassure the American people that our defenses were strong, the military forces of the United States established new airplane speed records, and more publicity was given to our accom- plishments in atomic power and guided missiles. Some politicians, on the other hand, cried that our schools and colleges were criminally negligent in not training thousands more scientists and engineers each year, and that un- less this were remedied immediately the future of this country would be in grave danger. Despite the natural tendency to press the panic-button when some other country seems-to be ahead of us, it is important that we appraise the situation intelligently. Not all of us have the aptitudes for becoming good scientists and engineers, but we may have aptitudes in other fields which are also important. Among other things we need more statesmen trained in international diplomacy, more teachers, doctors, nurses, mechanics, tech- nicians, and trained individuals in service occupations. One of the schools' chief obligations is to train persons according to their highest abilities in order that they may make their greatest contributions to society and to themselves. If there is one lesson that can be learned from the events which have so rapidly occurred during recent years it is this: Each individual must redouble his efforts to obtain as much training and as thorough training as he possibly can, and to take every advantage of opportunities which are open to him. A poorly trained person, or an untrained person is a liability both to himself and to his country. EUGENE F. CONANT Superintendent of Schools
