ART FIRE RUTH SOUL :aminj Behind these young lives, there radiance of the I ower '©f the Moat High,'.ir youthful hearts with gratitude for at) those who have made this day possible. It is to them that we, ihe Seniors of 1953, wi$h to dedicate in a thVee-fold manner this edition of “Memories” ... ... to those who, through the Living Spring as the secret energy infusing life into the soul, have given us life and taught us our first steps along the roads which men walk....................our parents'. ... to those who draw daily from the Fountain of Truth and spend their energies that they may shower upon us this spirit of truth....our thachcrs. ... to those whom, through the Holy Ghost as the Guest of Our Souls making us one in spirit, we have grown to know arid love at Catholic High................................... our companions. Pages 82 to 83 Patrons .........Pages 84 to 88 Looking back to our freshman and sophomore years, we recall our former principal, Father Cawley. Our memories of him, however, are dim; for as under- classmen, we had only slight personal contact with our principal. We remember him best as the kind voice of a friend and teacher over the P. A. system. At that time we placed Father Cawley on the pedestal reserved for those whom we best loved and revered; and it is again on a pedestal that we view Father Cawley as we meditate on our Catholic High “Memories.” 6 TWO WE SHALL NEVER FORGET Fifty years in God's service! This alone is a tribute. Literally thousands of students have passed under Sister M. Gregory’s guiding influence—a guidance reflecting the kindness of long years of service to God. For the past 28 years, Sister has been with us at Catholic High. This year, on December 8, Sister celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Sister of Charity. The students whom you have taught will long remember your kindness to them and may the Lord, whom you have lovingly served, continue to shower you with His golden graces. iiiimisTiiiTiin Year after year our priests and sisters watch each graduating class of young mei| nd women step out into the world for which they have been prepared. Ceaselessly they work on; different communities, all dedicated to the same work, training God’s youth. Often their names are forgotten but the work they do is a great influence to many in later life. Principal’s Message Another year has passed and another graduating class is preparing to leave forever the sheltering walls of Catholic High School. Perhaps that word “forever” somewhat startles or even frightens you. It does sound very final, doesn't it? But it is so true. When you pass through the portals of the school on graduation night, your lives as high school students are gone, never to return. Viewed in that light, perhaps the constant dinning into your ears of principles, the almost frantic concern of your teachers that you take advantage of every opportunity, and the incessant vigilance to keep you on the path of justice and truth take on a new meaning. For, in very large part, your lives will be what you made them in high school. True, in Confirmation you received the Holy Spirit, Who enlightens your minds to know the truth, and strengthens your wills to love the good; but the Holy Spirit ordinarily uses natural means to extend and perpetuate His influence. Your Catholic High School is just such a human instrument. Our earnest prayer is that your years in high school have so illumined and fortified you that you may walk un- hesitatingly down the pathway of life, with a clear eye and a firm step, into the heaven of eternal peace. It is in this great work of creation that our parents work hand in hand with God Himself. It is to them, therefore, that we dedicate the senior section of “Memories.” May the memory of our parents’ undying love and constant sacrifice awake in every senior a pledge of grati- tude toward those who have done most in life for us. OF THE EARTH Science, Languages, Mathematics, Social Studies . . . These are the oft re- peated words written each report period telling a story of triumph or woe. However, it is not the grades which determine the criterion for real education, but the understanding of the fundamental Truths which have made all these things possible. For these reasons, our priests and sisters daily approach this Fountain, imploring the Holy Spirit to pour grace into their souls that they might burn out their energies teaching, train- ing, and disciplining young hearts to follow these convicitions. It is with gratitude to them that we dedicate the section of our Classes. Mary Lou proves to Jim that Plane Geometry is easier than it sounds; but the rest of the class doesn't seem to think so. In Physics Lou Ann Ricvel and Andrew Sarosi balance the scales. Rita Brown and Bob Bulas operate the static generator. Jim Regan prepares the chemicals while Jim Janshego and Mary Catherine Litzinger get the Chemistry experiment underway. Pat Bracken takes notes lest we forget. Bill Hirsch shows Biology classmates what a chrysalis looks like. Nice going, Bill, tells us more; Joan Rodkey is even ready to turn the pages. These students of Economics seem thoroughly interested in planning future budgets. Looks as though Bob Andrews will be able to handle the situation. In order to take our place properly in society and mea- sure up to its requirements, we need a working knowledge of the problems confronting the average citizen. In P.O.D. these students are learning the necessary requisites. The events that happened to make our country- what it now. is are both interesting and exciting. Margaret, in this American History class, points to a section of the Louisiana Purchase which was a vital happening in our early history. Carolyn and Joe work out a translation as the remainder of the class follow with a critical eye in Latin IV. “This meeting will now come to order.” With George presiding, the English class carries on its discussion according to Parliamentary Procedure. School spirit implies an active partici- pation in all Catholic High projects. School spirit means action, and “action” is the bywork in our Pep Club. During our days at Catholic High, we have met and have come to love those who carry within them this royalty of Catholicism. We have knelt together at the same Table and eaten of the same Food. May this common bond unite us to greater endeavors; that together, we may kindle the fire of LOVE in the freezing heart of the world. It is a tribute to the seniors of 1953 that it is impossible to list the names of all those who helped on the Business Staff, and to those typ- ists who gave up so much of their free time in preparing the book for publication. A word of praise is also due all the seniors who have done their part in boosting the Patron Drive over the top.
