MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL During the past several months, American citizens have been shocked at repeated revelations of scandal and corruption in practically every level of government, from local to national. To the thoughtful person, these episodes could hardly have been surprising, for our modern emphasis on pleasure, money, and technical skill, with the attendant abandonment of the culture of the mind, not to mention the neutralizing of religious and moral influences, could scarcely have led in any other direction. Catholic schools have been criticized, and unfavorably compared with other institutions, for their adherence to a traditional or reactionary, program of education. Yet only such a system, which alone can train the student not only how to make a living, but also, and more important, how to live, can be trusted to produce citizens worthy of our great national traditions. lf it is true that others will produce more and better chemists, engineers, scientists, and technol- ogists, then it is,also true that the Catholic school will graduate men and women better trained in the principles of true patriotism, justice, and charity. Others may teach students how to make moneyg but the Catholic school teaches students how to save their souls. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but suffers the loss of his own soul? CMark 8365 Pro Deo et Patria - For God and Country is the motto of our High School. Our Savior stated that the first and greatest commandment embraces a wholehearted love of God. Ultimately all our train- ing, all our knowledge, all our works must be directed toward Him. The purpose of the Catholic school is to show you how this can be doneg and when one has been well trained in the love of God, then inevitably and necessarily love of country must follow.
