Father Linford F. Greinader p'566t6M4Za Graduation is always a time of mixed feelings. On one hand, there is a certain sense of accomp- lishment in the knowledge that a goal has been reached. On the other, there is a sense of sadness that many cherished associations must now be term- inated, perhaps forever as far as this life is con- cerned. Mingled with these is a feeling-greatly mistaken, as you shall discover-of relief from the fancied regimentation and order which are neces- sarily a part of school life. And hovering above all, particularly after the excitement of commencement activities has subsided, is an awareness of the newness and insecurity of the life into which you have been plunged from the sheltered pursuits of your academic career. Perhaps this sense of bewilderment is greater this year than ever before. You are entering a world which is torn by strife, confusion, and conflicting ideologies Great numbers of people, even those whose training has supposedly been directed to- ward the end of preparing them mentally, physi- cally, and psychologically for any eventuality, find themselves facing the future with a certain trepida- tion. It should not be so for the graduate of a Catholic High School. You have been trained not to be buffeted by the currents of worldly turmoil, but rather to shape the course of events. You go, like the Apostles of old, into a pagan and sinful world. Like them, you are armed, not with greater material, physical, or mental equipment, but with superior armament of the spirit. Not so long ago, a best-selling book gave notice that you can change the world, As Catholic high school graduates, you go forth, fashioned to the image of Christ, and follow- ing His Divine mandate, Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven , you not only can, but should, make a definite impression on the world. To do this you must have courage, the greatest type of courage - the courage to be different. You will not influence others by showing them that you can go along with all their worldly and even materialistic schemes-the world is filled with fellow travellers al- ready, but you will command the greatest respect by unfurling the.-positive banner of virtue which you have acquired in the course of your Catholic education. The world is like a ship tossed about by an angry seag it is searching for the lighthouse of truth and morality that will guide it into the safe harbor of peace and salvation. You have that lightg place it, not under a measure, but upon the lampstand so that it may illumine all who come within its orbit. Secure in this knowledge of your training and equipment, you can carry with you the comforting admonition of the Diving Master, Let not your hearts be troubled, nor be afraid. May Almighty God bless you abundantly in all your efforts to fulfill the riches of your Catholic heritage. Father Linford F. Greinader
