TO SAINT CHRISTOPHER therefore. we dedicate the twenty-sixth volume of R I I MEMORIES. ' SAINT CHRISTOPHER was a native of Chanaan. His name lwho bears Christi expresses his love for Jesus. A generous soul. he walked like a giant in the way ol virtue. The piety oi our fathers inspired by this grand allegory caused them to place a colossal statue oi Saint Christopher at the entrance to Cathe- drals. Even a legend grew that he was really a giant. and that he carried the Infant Iesus on his shoulders over a river. He won the palm oi Martyrdom in 250 A. D. It is our earnest hope that through his powerful interces- sion. we may put on the image of Christ so that through Him. with Him. and in Him. we may advance the Peace oi Christ in the Reign oi Christ and be eternal Bearers of Him to men. SAINT CHRISTOPHER, PRAY FOR US. Father Thomas T. Cawley Father Iohn C. O'Leary 0 ,..:.-o- it is On February lst, Father Cawley and Father O'Leary re- ceived official notice to relinquish their duties at Catholic High School and to report for duty on February 6th at their new assignments: namely, Church of the Visitation, Iohns town, and Our Lady of Victory Chapel at Pennsylvania State College. After twenty-eight years of devoted service, Father Caw- ley has developed ci spirit and a system at Catholic High School which can be truly termed unique. His capable guidance began March 6, l923, about two weeks after his Ordination. Iust as the school grew in numbers with the passing of the years, so did experience enrich his judg- ment and wisdom. After a period of time, increasing responsibilities and added tasks inseparable from the work of administration limited Fathers direct influence in the classroom. His de- votion to high standards of excellence has, however, indi- rectly accomplished much that has played a significant role in the lives of approximately 2500 graduates and many hundreds of' other students aside from the definite contribu- tion Catholic Higri School has made to the Christian culture of lohnstown and vicinity, Father Cawley has been to us, members of the Class of l9Sl, administrator, teacher, counselor and priest. For his sacrifices, zeal and noble example we are conscious of a deep debt of gratitude, This debt can be paid only in the coin of eternity, earnest prayer, and of this coin we promise generous contributions. While we deeply regret Fathers departure from Cathclic High School, we cannot but rejoice that he will be engaged in that work oi the ministry which is dear to the heart of every priest, working directly for the salvation of souls. Catholic High School owes Father O'Leary profound gratitude for seventeen years of faithful and efficient teach- ing in his capacity as Professor of Religion. Each succeed- ing student body that has passed through our schools treasured halls on thexr way to the great university of life had the opportunity to go well instructed in the knowledge of the unurn necessariuinf Father O'Leary's keen analysis of all moral problems resulted in practical solutions for those who must be in the world but not of it. We feel that our association with both Father Cawley and Father O'Leary nas been for us a special blessing from God. We felicitate those who will be the chief objects of their shepherding as pastors, That God may bless abundantly their efforts in those portions of His vineyard where His Will has placed them is the sincere prayer of THE CLASS OF 1951 S A , Wwe 1 , Q I MI? aw c xt 5 gi . 5 ? ii X S Administration 1 Father Linford F. Greinader p'566t6M4Za Graduation is always a time of mixed feelings. On one hand, there is a certain sense of accomp- lishment in the knowledge that a goal has been reached. On the other, there is a sense of sadness that many cherished associations must now be term- inated, perhaps forever as far as this life is con- cerned. Mingled with these is a feeling-greatly mistaken, as you shall discover-of relief from the fancied regimentation and order which are neces- sarily a part of school life. And hovering above all, particularly after the excitement of commencement activities has subsided, is an awareness of the newness and insecurity of the life into which you have been plunged from the sheltered pursuits of your academic career. Perhaps this sense of bewilderment is greater this year than ever before. You are entering a world which is torn by strife, confusion, and conflicting ideologies Great numbers of people, even those whose training has supposedly been directed to- ward the end of preparing them mentally, physi- cally, and psychologically for any eventuality, find themselves facing the future with a certain trepida- tion. It should not be so for the graduate of a Catholic High School. You have been trained not to be buffeted by the currents of worldly turmoil, but rather to shape the course of events. You go, like the Apostles of old, into a pagan and sinful world. Like them, you are armed, not with greater material, physical, or mental equipment, but with superior armament of the spirit. Not so long ago, a best-selling book gave notice that you can change the world, As Catholic high school graduates, you go forth, fashioned to the image of Christ, and follow- ing His Divine mandate, Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven , you not only can, but should, make a definite impression on the world. To do this you must have courage, the greatest type of courage - the courage to be different. You will not influence others by showing them that you can go along with all their worldly and even materialistic schemes-the world is filled with fellow travellers al- ready, but you will command the greatest respect by unfurling the.-positive banner of virtue which you have acquired in the course of your Catholic education. The world is like a ship tossed about by an angry seag it is searching for the lighthouse of truth and morality that will guide it into the safe harbor of peace and salvation. You have that lightg place it, not under a measure, but upon the lampstand so that it may illumine all who come within its orbit. Secure in this knowledge of your training and equipment, you can carry with you the comforting admonition of the Diving Master, Let not your hearts be troubled, nor be afraid. May Almighty God bless you abundantly in all your efforts to fulfill the riches of your Catholic heritage. Father Linford F. We do not need more intellectual power, we need more moral power. We do not need more knowledge, we need more character. We do not need more government, we need more culture. We do not need more lawg we need more religion. These words uttered by a late President and statesman may well describe your Christopher aim for the Seniors of 1951, for the objective oi all your teaching has been to meet these needs. Your teaching has been done in a dedicated sense and it is this sublime motivation that reflects in everything you do a Christopher concern for all, a devotion, a loyalty, a quiet enthusiasm, a gaiety ot heart which is the lot of those who are fulfilling in the most literal sense and to the fullest measure possible the purpose for which they were created To love God above all things and your neighbor as yourself. As teachers you become Christophers carrying the teachings of Christ to the world. Your sterling example has made us keenly aware of our obli- gation to become Christophers in carrying to others by precept and example the truths given us by Christ through you. We shall leave you with the memory ol your Christ-Bearing ways and with the hope that your prayers will accompany us: into the varied fields of Christ-Bearing activities.
