PRINCIPAL'S IRLSSRGf n his allocution this year to priests assigned to deliver the Lenten sermons in Rome, our Holy Father dwelt at length on the the movement away from God that is prevalent throughout the world. He deplored the fact that so many of God's creatures — among them large numbers of Catholics — live as though their only aim is to find heaven on earth, without any thought of the life hereafter, which is eternal. The Pope's words, alas, are only too true. In our own nation paganism and godlessness and irreligion fill the very atmosphere we breathe. Such things as pleasure, freedom, beauty, power, materia! possessions are held up as idols. Their praises are sung everywhere and always on stage and screen, in the press and over the air. The strain of the song is so bewitching that it casts a spell on the senses, and its victims are captured ere they are aware. Youth particularly are being deceived and led astray by this misplaced em- phasis. And, sad to say, many of our Catholic youth, who have the superior advantages of solid religious training and the powerful assist- ance of divine grace, are being gravely affected. When the Church raises her voice against this neo-paganism, angry zealots hurl charges at her from all directions. They blame her for being reactionary, old-fashioned, out of step with modern progress, etc. Always ob- serve that propagandists never offer any real proof for their lies. Hence, what are the facts in this matter? The Church finds nothing wrong in your desire for pleasure, and in reasonable endeavors to satisfy the desire. No churchman will blame you for wanting a measure of freedom. Material possessions are not evil in themselves. The point is that these things are being glorified out of all proportion to their importance, and those who do the glorifying create the im- pression that the spiritual, supernatural world either does not exist, or is not important. In other words, God, the Creator, is pushed off the stage, and creatures made by Him are brought in to take His place. Caesar is given not only what is his, but also the things that belong to God. Without any doubt this is a serious derangement of God's plan. In the very first Commandment given to Moses on Mount Sinai, God issued this solemn warning: THOU SHALT NOT HAVE STRANGE GODS BEFORE ME. Seek happiness, by all means, because God wants you to. But do not seek it where the world directs; because, if you do, you will not find it, and thus you will condemn yourself to repeated W;

disappointment and perpetual frustration. Seek pleasure, if you will, but only that which is law- ful, and seek it in moderation. Do not make a god of it, as idolators do. Defend your right to freedom, but do not confuse it with license, as worldlings do. Ever since the beginning of time nations and individuals have tried to get along without God. The record of their complete failure is written in large type across the pages of history. In this very generation the bitter fruits of that vain attempt have dealt a staggering blow to civiliza- tion itself — two world wars and one economic depression, the like of which was never known. You would think that harrowing experiences like these should actually open the eyes of the blind and induce even the most obstinate to accept the clear message of the Spirit of Truth: UNLESS THE LORD BUILD THE HOUSE, THEY LABOR IN VAIN THAT BUILD IT. But seemingly there are many even in high places whose eyes are not filled with seeing, determined to proceed to their eternal doom, declaring to the very last, WE HAVE NO KING BUT CAESAR. So you have much food for thought, as you leave the training ground and step into the arena of life. Your first duty is to God: Serve Him faithfully. Your second duty is to yourself: Save your soul at all costs. Your third duty is to your neighbor, and your neighbor is all man- kind. You must be conscious as individuals of a positive duty to contribute to the work of solv- ing the grave problems that exist in the world today. You will do this in general by counter- acting the movement away from God. Specific- ally you will do it by a pattern of life based on a foundation such as the following: Believe in a Personal God, Who created the world and all that is in it. Who has supreme dominion over ALL men. Whose claims take precedence over all others. Who has revealed His plans for the universe, and has recorded the revelation in Sacred Scripture. Obey the Ten Commandments, which God gave directly to Moses. Accept the teaching and governing authori- ty of the Catholic Church, which was established by Jesus Christ, the Son of God made Man. Do penance for your own sins and the sins of mankind. Pray faithfully. In large measure this is the most recent mes- sage given to man by God through Our Lady of Fatima. Heed this message and you will attain eternal life; ignore it, and your soul will languish in Hell for all eternity. GOD BLESS YOU.
