The father, who is in the hardware business, is not in sympathy with him. Eddie decides to get the S250 by entering an essay contest. Complications multiply, and the Barry family is disgraced when Eddie is accused of plagiarism The Barry entanglements begin to unravel when Uncle George returns from one of his trips and announces that he had sent in the essay that Eddie had copied for style. The final surprise comes when the second best essay is the one Eddie had sent in under an assumed name. He asks for a volunteer to accom' pany him back, and Flanders Callaway, the hero ofthe stockade, is the Hrst to volunteer. Fearing Jemima, his ideal, is in love with Samuel, he is anxious to leave home. However, bashful Samuel loves only Betsy, Flanders' sister. Soon Flanders returns, but with the bad news that Cornstalk has been killed. The settlers fear war but permit the young folks to plan a celebration, because Squire Boone has announced the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Meanwhile, Jemima, Betsy and Frances are kidnapped by the Indians. All the men under the leadership of the mighty Daniel Boone, rescue the girls.
