Flihe C lass of 1941 can boast of a rare distinction, that of being the hrst class to receive from His Excellency, Bishop Guilfoyle, an interest so personal and detailed that it led him to be present for each assembly at which reports were distributed. His presence and encouragement were a stimulus to further study. lVlay this distinguished honor continue to be as certain for our successors as death and taxes. 2? . The world is reeling from the im- pact of a devastating yar. Nations are falling one by one before the mad onrush of mechan- ized might. Destruction of life and property T l V- 'l'll'W-'XS 'W'-WT-l'3Y is taking place at an appalling rate. Civiliza- I 'lm l 'll tion faces possiblv her gravest crisis. Wlhat a far cry is this mass murder. called war, from the command of the Prince of Peace: Put up thy sword into its pl ace. Vifhat a sad commentary upon the :ihility of man to solve his problems with out the help of God! 0n every page of history we read the same story, namely, that the gospel of hate, of selfish greed, of injustice and of force leads to death and disaster. The gospel of unselhfishness, of truth, of justice, of charity-the gospel of love-this is the only gospel that will settle the worlcl's conflicts. You have heard that it hath been said, 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thy enemy'. But It say to you: Love your enemiesg do good to them that hate you: pray for them that persecute and calumniate you . A strange gospel this. Yet it works: and what is stranger still, it is the only gospel that does work. You go forth commissioned to preach this gospel. See that you preach it faithfully, both in word and in deed. Only thus can you be true to the ideals that have been implanted in you. Only thus can you contribute your rightful share to the upbuilding of mankind and the stabilizing ot society. Only thus can you attain the end for which you were created. Cod speed you on your journey. FLOWER MISSION UNIT Our Holy Father, in his Mission Sunday radio address, expressed this heartfelt hope: The raising of prayer before the sacred tabernacle . . will not fail to be ac- companied by the gift of your hand, you will offer it in this sad and distressing hour . . to rebuild what has been damaged or destroyed, to reassure the faint-heart- ed . . to sustain, to increase and advance the whole missionary movement. Six-sevenths of the money which Europe gave to Catholic missions came from countries that are now involved in the war, particularly generous were the contribu- tions from Belgium and Holland, neither of which is able to give anything at the present time. To make up for the decrease in the European contribution, it is estimated filihe Shield. Uctober, I940, uThe Budget for Americanl that Catholic Americans will need to give something like 520,000,000 to the missions during I9-II. This is five millions less than our country will spend on one battleship. It is an average of two dollars for every Catholic American old enough to save pennies. Our students have hearkened to our Holy Fatheris appeal through the follow- ing activities of our mission unit: The offering ol prayers through the Gemmais Leagueg The sale of seals for the Holy Childhood Association, Supporting colored mission in South Carolinag Selling the Goal and The Far Easti' for mission purposes: joining the Catholic Students' Mission Crusade, Using mite boxes to gather coins for missionaries. As a means to inspire beautiful morals and lofty ideals, we presented the plays-- Platinum Blond and One Who Called, first place. A greater appreciation of the Queens Xvorkn was manifested in the notab'e increase of yearly subscriptions. The Sodalite, the Sodality news sheet, is published every Friday preceding So- dality Communion Sunday. The Sodalists have a regular Communion Sunday, the fourth Sunday of the month: the majority of the girls are faithful in receiving Holy Communion in their parish churches. There were no howling cats on Halloween this year for all the Sodalists accepted the invitation to the annual Halloween party. rl he seniors, especially, will not for- get that jolly party--the last of their high school days. The annual Bazaar was held February 5th, All entered into it with willing spirits and cooperation which brought about a very successful event. Vocation Week was planned for March I0th to l7th. Father Cawley favored us with a talk on religious vocations. Several of our students spoke about marriage as a vocation, the business career and the religious vocations. A number of girls generously answered questions as to their aspirations. Posters were displayed in the halls during this week and pamphlets were distributed among the sodalists. MEMORIES Fifty-sin' QQ K.,- a! N ...Q t LEGEND Long years ago the world was very young And in its wisdom, Wisdom crucified. And very wise. Complacently it sold Intolerant, the earth with sudden chill Its lvartered knowldge, otferd every tongue Refused her yearly gift, remained aloof, Its garnered tidbits gleaned from legends old. This beautiful Coronation Ceremony took place on a lovely lVlay day. Helene Ruth very reverently represented the Queen of May. Her two worthy attendants were Regina Byers and Kathryn l..udwig. Catherine Dostal carried the crown which Father Cawley placed upon the head of our favored sodalist: Florence Riley bore one with which I-lelene crown ed the lovely plastic representation of our most dear Mother. Father Cawley, in a few well chosen remarks, congratulated the lVlay Queen for the high honor conferred upon her by her associates, congratulated the Officers and Representatives andthe Sisters in charge for the pronounced success of the lVlay Crowning, as well as, of the work of the Sodality for the entire year. I-le called at- tention to the fact that the beautiful cerem ony was a reminder of the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin lVlary in l-Ieaven. In con clusion, Father said: Confidently, then, let us call on her, begging her constant protection and pledging our undying devotion till the dawn of that happy day When, with the saints and angels of heaven, we shall kneel at the foot of her throne in the land of bliss everlasting. l 9 4 l y-svlwll THE SODALITE This marks the third successful year for the publication of the Sodalite. Accord- ing to many rumors, it is found that most senior Socialists reserve the most treasured section in their scrap book for this monthly paper. Small though it is, it contains news of much interest to all Sodalists. It is the herald announcing activities-the Hallow- een party. Vocation W'eek, the Bazaar, meetings, plays, and the lVlay Crowning. ln an obscure way it teaches us to love the Blessed Mother and her divine Son more and more each day. Yes, we have had other retreaats: we hope to make retreats in the future, but this one was our last high school retreat. VVe were fortunate to have an excellent retreat master in the person of Father Doran, V. SS. li. lfrom the notes taken by the senior girls, we are able to list the main ideas of the yarious conferences. Monday-First Conference: The tirst retreat was made by the eleyen Apostles and the Blessed Mother. When thrist was scourged and nailed to the cross, they had a great fear of the Jews, so they locl-'cd themselves in a room and made a nine-day retreat. When they left the room. they came out heroes. When asked to deny Christ. they refused and said they con- sidered it a privilege to die for Him. A retreat did this for them. What will it do tor ns? Monday-Second Conference: lsaac .loques suffered without comment so many tortures that the chief of thc ti ibc cut out .looues's heart and drank the blood. He said, If l have the blood of thFs man in mc, l shall be as brave and courageous as he is. livery time you receive lloly t'omn1union you purple your lips with the Blood of C'hrist. Monday--Third Conference: lienedict Arnold committed an act of treason against our country. But the peo- ple in the world today commit a greater act of treason than this. They commit mor- tal sin. There has neyer been a mortal sin in this world that has not been paid for x cry dearly. Monday-ifourth Conference: Next to the lllessed Sacrament, Penance is the greatest gift God gave us. If there was at confessional outside of hell, hell would be empty. We should prepare for this sacrament before we go into the confessional. We should pray for two things before we use this sacrament: l. The grace to know our sins. Tl. The t'tJlll'ZUIU to confess them. This year it was improved by the addition of a Xylophone. CA NTATA The Christmas Cantata this year was not just another Cantata. The Pag- eant of the Holy Nativity seemed different from any we have ever had, for there was more drama, more color and more singing, which portrayed the solemnity and heauty of the birth of the Christ Child. The harmonious voices of the choristers singing the praises of the lncarnate Word, thrilled the audience with the happy spirit of Christmas, and thus helped to fulfill the real purpose of the Cantata. The Jones t'amily has three children: Gladys, Morey. and Kit. hladys isa sophisticated, sell'-conceited girl about twenty-nine years old, Morey is a tree and easy lad of about twenty-two years and Kit is a loving, cheerful girl of about seventeen. Mrs. Jones and Gladys are a scheming pair. Because ot' Gladyss odd disposition. she has not yet married and has not the slighest prospect. Mis. Jones tries to make a match between Lord Hawleigh and Gladys but tails to do so because' Lord Rawleigh really gets interested in Kit and not Gladys. l.ord Hawleigh turns out to be not a lord but a well-known crook known as Mack the ace , lle uncovers plot which is plan- ned by Mrs. Maxtield, a thief who poses as a lady ot' society. and Fulton. a notorious gangster who is employed in the Jones household. liord liawleigh, the ace , final- ly decides to cross the bridge which is between where he is and his selt'-respect. Mr. Jones then takes over the family and rules with a lirm hand. Kit then marries Mr. t'hallman, the garageman, Gladys is changed to a lovely, agreeable character, and Morey elopes with Ilora Vewan. the garderer's daughter. We are now pupils there. The teachers and we are the actors. Those fond memories seem to captivate an interest in our hearts for we all like to remember our school days. Scene l-On a bright, brisk, autumn morning, a little over four years ago, a group of young men and women were beginning their first day at Central Catholic High. Some were dubious: others ambitious, but all were a bit fidgety. Perhaps it was the thought of new curriculum-Latin, algebra, ancient history, English, or the inher- ited dread of the second floor office, but this nervousness was soon released from our hearts after we entered the portals of Catholic High. After the first day all looked toward the future with hope and confidence. Scene ll-The lights are dimmedg the audience is hushedg the music stops. and slowly the curtain is pulled to unveil another play under the direction of Father Fitz- gibbon. And when the last act is over and the people slowly begin to file from the auditorium, a humble priest can be seen backstage congratulating his stars. No, he doesn't receive the encores. but to him goes the honor of being the best director in Qlohnstown During our freshman year, Father Fitzgibbon presented the follow- ing smash-hits: 'iThe Bat , a super thrillerg Christmas Through the Ages , a Christmas Cantatag Smilin' Through , a love storyg Behold the Man , the Lenten play, and All at Sea , the annual operetta starring the pupils of the school. Scene lll-Although the football team played a mediocre season, the do or die spirit was shown in the last game of the schedule at Pittsburgh. With ten seconds to play, Catholic High took possession of the ball. The pigskin was snapped back to Brandon: in desperation he ran back looking for a receiver, suddenly he threw the ball with all his power: into the air it zoomed and out of nowhere the giant hand of joe Major grabbed the ballg one-two-three men, the husky end sidestepped and after running ten yards he was over the goal for a touchdown. The score was tied, but was Pittsburgh to hold? Catholic ca me from the huddle for the extra point try. The Crusher lined up in the familiar MT formationg Brandon took the pass from center and heaved the piffskin into the waiting arms of johnny Spack. The point was good! Catholic High won the game with only ten seconds to play! A contrast was noted in the basketball team. ln V938 the Crusher won every regular season game except one, and went on, in a blaze of glory, to capture the State Championship. MEMORIES .-- T11 ii lu tml: Scene lV-To look after the spiritual needs of the students of the school the Little Flower Mission Society and the Sodality were founded. The hard work of the girls and Sisters enabled the Annual Sodality Bazaar to be a success both socially and financially. The Mission Society sponsors the annual retreat. and in our freshmen year the presence of Father Hart as Retreat master was appreciated by the freshmen class. The climax of everv school year is the Final Exams . When we learned that we had successfully walked the ways of Knowledge during our first year of high school, we were content. We had spent a year at Central Catholic, and all were determined to come back for the sophomore term. Act Il Time-4937-l939 Scene l--The sun shines brightly. students converse freely about subjects. teachers, athletic possibilities. They are the 'isophisticatecl Sophomoresf' They ride the freshies, but with good nature, and many of them, remembering their own young days help to fix the newcomers and put them right as to schedules, subjects, and rules. 'l-hey plan to become military strategists with Caesar in Gaul, and to study French, the language of romance. Scene ll-An interruption in studies by the Alumni players, who entertained us with The Big Pond, and Howdy Stranger. The students present the Cantata, Ulcleart of Christmas, the operetta, Swords and Scissors, and the senior class play entitled Very Untruly Yours. The first Talent Night, a program featuring the entertainment talent of the student, a great success. The large and varied amount of talent supplied a pleasant surprise and provided the incentive for making the per- formance an annual affair. Scene lll-The football team plays ten games, wins five, loses five. Our basket- ball team won the first game of the tournament, but lost the second game. The basketball team, though eliminated in the second game made the Winners tremble with their accuracy and team play. Although they were not given much chance of victory, they showed team spirit and upset some of the favorites who were bet- ter on paper, but not on the gridiron. Scene IV-A beautiful, peaceful nook. At one end an altar twinkles with candles. Father Gerard, O. S. B., is conducting a retreat. It is a soul-warming thing-it makes the students stop to consider seriously the question, 'iwhat are we here for, anyway? The students wander idly on a bridge Vacation over a tinkling brook. I 9 4 I My-!i1'1' 4 ACT Ill Time:-l939-l940 Scene l-The students have crossed the stream, and now, belong to the Smart Set, the Juniors. They exercise one of their rights. the choice between a Commercial and an Academic course, They learn typing and shorthand or Latin and French. They attend dances and other social functions open only to upper classmen. Scene ll-A pleasant retreat conducted by Father McDermott, C. P. Another ques- tioning, more deep thought. Father aroused a determination to succeed but only by fair and square means. Scene lll--The actors plav out some of the favorite stories. The Alumni show Nervous Wreck, and the First Legion. The students' efforts produce The Spirit ot Christmas and the operetta Top O' the WcJrld. Scene IV-Our football team turned in a creditable performance. winning seven games, and losing two, both by one touchdown The basket-ball team returns from Vlfilliamsport, deserving champions bringing home the Bishop Hafey trophy. Scene V-Distraction now came in the forms of dances, the Easter dance and lun- ior-Senior Prom. The students celebrate the Prince Gallitzin Centennial by writ- ing essays, two of which received honorable mention. also by competing in the ora- torical contest sponsored by the Catholic Sorority of Johnstown, Anna Marie Buck- ard carried off the first prize and Martha Vance garnered the second. Catholic High School claimed the first prize in the Gallitzin Poster contest, the lucky artist being Eleanor Kleman, a freshman. Many ofthe students were happy to be chosen as members of the cast for the Gallitzin Pageant, the climax of the activities in mem- ory of the Prince Priest. ACT IV Time-September I 940-june I 941 Now four years later a group of dignified Seniors are be- ginning their last term at Central Catholic High. From all over the city the students come-some walk, others ride but all with the determination to make their last year at Catholic their best year both scholastically and social- ly. Scene I-The opening day is the same as it was when we were freshmen-sunshine showered everywhere, but a great change has taken place since the autumn of W38. The new seniors are confident, because they have been enriched both intellectually and spiritually. Moreover, they have begun to realize that life is not such a bed IVIEMORIFS ,., Thiifu sir of roses as they thought. Withotit much excitement the pupils arrange their sched- ules. Some, wishing to catch up. are taking underclass subjects, while others are hastening to the Vergil, physics, social problems, English, intermediate algebra. and trigonometry. Gone is the light--hearted gayetyg the pupil now real- izes that the time will come when they must fish for themselves. With this unusual seriousness the Seniors began their fourth and last. year at Central Catholic. Scene ll--The trumpets heralded another banner year for the stage productions at Catholic High. Because of the line direction of our one and only Father Fitzgibbou large audiences witnessed the plays during the I940-41 season, and the same stand- ard of excellence was not lacking. The genial priest presented Dulcy , a comedy: the annual Christmas Cantatag the relatively new innovation in stage productions, mllalent Nightllz and the operetta, Forest Princeil, starring the pupils of the school. Scene lll--Smashing all pre-season dope the Crimson Crusher Football squad. with a limited amount of material, won six. tied two, lost two. and those by one point mar- gins. Facing the stiff schedule as they did, the boys justified themselves week in and week out. and the Crushers of l940 can he truly called the best team in the his- tory of Catholic High. To bring fond memories here are our classmates who justi- fied themselves on the gridiron: Charley Yarchak, -lim Katenesky, Tim Marshall. Mike lVlitrus, Frank Fabish, Frank Kozuch, Paul Mardis. Tommy Quirk, .loe Tholt, i'Butchl' Hanley, C-ig Bischof, Jack Pfiester, and john Curley. Although the basketball team did not live up to early season expectations, it had a fair season, playing hot and cold ball, winning sixteen and losing nine. Scene IV-The annual Retreat given by a Redemptorist, was declared the best in our four years here at Central Catholic High School: and the annual Sodality Bazaar proved a phenomenal success. The last year of school always passes quickly and our Senior year was no exception. Final Exams seemed to come just as fast as we could say jack Robinson . It was like a dream. Commencement night was soon over and all realized that their days at Central Catholic High were ended. With sad hearts, that group of freshman that first entered the portals at Catholic High four years ago left their Alma Ma- ter. Now we are going into all walks of life enhanced by the spirit of Catholic High. We have learned not onl your school work, but we are also determined to make the world a little better because we have lived in lt. Villa 'l'lclF.
