flcou i 'rlfiy i Sc iooC s4C z z h z (? - £cUt xa — fi utet ’TH i'Ua — I Your year at Johnston Junior High School will be a TREASURE in many ways. This yearbook will serve as the chest filled with the jewels of beauty, the chains of golden friendships, the pearls of achievement, the gems of knowledge, and the coins of competition. Unlike the treasures of the pirates and kings of long ago this treasure chest contains something far more valuable. Locked within the pages of this book are memories of your year at Johnstqp. The TREASURE CHEST will be- come more and more valuable with the passing of time. One that can never be lost but will remain as a gentle reminder of time spent at Johnston. 6 10 5 16 0 0 T edccatco t 0 To say that “she cares is perhaps the greatest compliment that can be paid a teacher. And this is often and justly said of this teacher. Above all she cares for her students. She spends many hours guiding the students through the intricacies of mathematics. Always quick with encouragement, she has understanding and faith in her students. The STONJO pauses to honor this fine member of the faculty whose name has been linked with Johnston Junior High School for many years. Her busy hours are filled with patience to her students and her sharp individual wit can brighten the longest class period. She is a teacher who represents others like herself who are working for future well-being of the stu- dent and the school. The Annual staff proudly dedicates the 1967 STONJO to Mrs. Virginia Robertson. A steady worker in the math commons and testing room, Mrs. Robertson was Head of the math dept 2nd semester. Eddie Leslie and Sammy Holdsambeck receive individual help. 17 'KttocvlecCye of 7Aetne — s4 7 eei4u e (?Ae4t. DeeUcatcon.............................. '7 te of (Zontente..................... It is an honor to be associated with such an out- standing group of young citizens and teachers. May the pages of this book bring to mind to each of us the joys, privileges, and opportunities of working and playing together in the true American spirit, and spur us on to higher academic and personal aspirations. These words became a part of your vocabulary as the English Department launched its first complete year of individualized study. Students, were scheduled to the commons several times a week for work on programmed materials, for large group instruction, for group discussions or for browsing and reading. Grouping was changed from time to time, with students being grouped sometimes by achievement and other times by needs. While you worked hard, your teachers did, too. Team teaching involving planning and writing study guides for YOU. This was the main idea to help the individual student YOU. Head 0Defr vtf ne tt The Mathematics Department continued with pro- grammed mathematics which was oriented last year. With programmed mathematics, study guides were used to give the students different approaches to the mathematical concepts. The study guides were cross referenced to various textbooks. These textbooks were checked out when needed for algebra and general mathematics students. Beginning seventh and eighth grade students were is- sued textbooks to accompany their study guides. This type of program provides for individual dif- ferences in that the student is doing work on his own grade and achievement level. Em- phasis this year, was placed on individual achievement, and small and large group instruction. Students were grouped ac- cording to ability and achievement and were regrouped at any time during the school year, if their level of work indi- cated a need for regrouping. Study guides, programmed learning aids, were used by the students to follow in reaching their objectives. Live sciences, Earth sciences, and Physical sciences, were taught to each grade. The emphasis you --was the key to our social stud- ies program. By using individual material, our teachers were striving to guage the study so that it was meaningful to each student. To help in achieving this, study guides, visual aids, and var- ied enrichment assignments were provided. The commons was a new area to us this year, but many aspects of it were familiar. In one large room we had space for several classes to come together to see a film or hear a lecture that might be presented to a number of students at one time. We hope that each student progressed and that the social studies program had a meaningful experience for each of you this year. All these things and many more, including time, patience, and people working together go into the making of a good and worthwhile yearbook. Since the Stonjo costs more than the subscriber’s price, the staff must raise funds in order to give you, the students, a superior yearbook for a school our size. This extra money is raised through the sale of pictures, dances, and the annual Who's Who Pageant. This year the staff was headed by Janet Morris and Rob Reynolds, Co-Editors, and Amy Wesley and Betty Bagley, Business Managers. More than once our printing bill has been more than we could meet and we found ourselves in the hole. Our aim is to build up our budget so that we may in the future, be able to give a free paper to every Johnston student each month. We would like to thank you, the students, for co-operat- ing with us and making it possible for us to enlarge the paper, thus including more of the school news which interests you. This organization has centered its energies and projects to make school life more interesting and more rewarding for the individual student. Many various clubs were formed giving the students a chance to become involved in school activities. IWP's, on Tuesday, were set aside for club meetings. In an effort to improve the school spirit of Johnston, the Student Council planned a homecoming, which was a huge success. The Student Council was also active in planning and conducting a week of activities during AEW. The Council sponsored a trip to Birmingham to see the Broadway play, Hello Dolly”. This trip proved to be very successful and re- warding to those who went. One of the favorite activities the Council has sponsored for the past few years is the hilarious Student-Faculty Basketball game. The spectacle is one of the highlights of the school year. The basketball game this year was a grand victory for the teachers. Among the other fund-raising projects included a candy-sale and many dances. This money was used to pay for all activities the Stu- dent Council participated in. It is an incorporated, non-profit organization, supported by membership dues. Membership is voluntary. All students who are taking or have taken a home economics course are eligible to join. The national organization is composed of charted state associations which are made up of local chapters. The over-all goal of the organization is to help individuals improve personal, family, and com- munity living; now and in the future. Each year members of local chapters develop a program of work including projects and experiences which will help them work toward the purposes. We fostered an understanding and appreciation of the customs and culture of the peo- ple who live in Spain, Germany and France, coun- tries about which we need to be better informed in a world which is becoming increasingly smaller in this modern age of the jet and tel-star satellite. Our school offered an ever expanding language program, having added German this year. We now offer Spanish, French, Latin and German. We feel that since we concentrated on the spoken and writ- ten language in class, a language club gave us the opportunity to learn more about the countries and their people. To reach our goal of greater communication among countries, we proposed to present programs of plays, skits, films and slides, dialogues and se- lected speakers during the year for the enjoyment of our club members as well as any other interested members of the student body.
