Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1964 volume:

FOREWORD The Annual Staff proudly presents the 1963-64 Cavalier. We have spent much time and effort in trying to make this one of the best annuals in the history of our school. We have chosen as our theme the game of chess. The representation of the gold chessman on the front of this book is the beginning of our theme. The powers of each piece run paralel with the powers and responsibilities of the section it represents. Finally each piece is put in its proper place and the chess set is completed. All the peices depend on each other and strive for unity, as the game could not exist, without every piece working together. We, the Annual Staff, hope you will treasure this volume of the Cavalier” as a remembrance of the school term 1963-64 at Johnston Junior High School. Your Annual Staff, BETTY NOHLE - Editor 63-‘64 BILL McCARGO - Assistant Editor '63-'64 JEAN BODENHEIMER - Business Manager '64 SENIORS STAFF MEMBERS RICHARD ROUTMON - ‘63-‘64 PAULA CORTY - '64 CAROL SEDLOCEK - ‘63-'64 VICKI HEAD - '64 JUNIORS KEL LONDERS - '64 MELTON HOOD - '64 SISSY DENTON - '64 SHARON McCLELLON - '64 BOB COEFIELD - '64 PAT CONODO - '64 GAIL LONDRY - 64 NINTH GRADE WHO'S WHO - EIGHTH GRADE SECTION - - EIGHTH GRADE WHO’S WHO SNAPS AND HELPERS-------- SEVENTH GRADE SECTION - SEVENTH GRADE WHO’s WHO SPORTS SECTION........... Without the board this game could not be effectively played. The board stands as a ready means of help to the pieces that are placed upon it. It acts as a guide so each peice may advance in the best and right direction if it so desires. The board cannot make pieces move in any direction but always stands ready to guide and direct, if possible, those who seek help. The Administration, Faculty, and your school building are ready to give aid to you, the student, in any possible way; but in return you must choose the right path of advancement in a chosen field. The board anxiously watches each piece progress, regress, or stand com- pletely still. Although the king and queen are extremely important pieces, they need the other pieces to play the game successfully. The ninth grade students have taken their initial step into high school. Through the efforts of teachers, parents, and classmates they will be free to work and achieve their goal or remain idle and stay as they are. The class of 64 appreciates the help and encouragement given by the other pieces throughout their years at J. J. H. S. The bishops act as guardian angels to their king and queen. They protect the main pieces and the places they occupy on the board. The bishops move freely but with great care, forward, or backward at their own will. Each bishop progresses or regresses with each move it makes. The class of '65 anticipates the move of the king and queen with great hopes, desires, and dreams. They may move either to the left or right and are free to jump any of the other pieces on the board. As the class of 66 has taken the first initial step and now they are free to progress on into the 8th and 9th grades or remain in the 7th. Whether they pursue the right or left direction will make no great difference as long as they strive for a better education. After they have achieved those two steps before them they will then attempt to make the great jump, the jump from junior to senior high school. The class of '66 looks to the bishops, kings and queens for guidance, leadership, and knowledge as they attempt to move forward.
