The Leader at Johnston is not the school Politician, or the Wheel, or the Name, or the Executive. The Leader is one who is humble. Who gives of his free time. Who ponders long and hard over a decision. Who listens with open mind to the opinions of others, Who strives for harmony between the administration, the faculty, and students of Johnston. The Leader is one who Shows the way. The best way For those concerned. The True Leader of Johnston Is never satisfied But ever strives for a better Johnston! On tAe ffo Towing pages . The students are taught music appreciation through funda- mental music theory and through the study of composers and their works. Each semester a select group of students from all classes is chosen to present the annual Christmas and spring programs. The groups are under the direc- tion and leadership of Mrs. Mary Katherine Hanvey. SPEECH DEPT. The speech department this year was composed of 81 students under the cap- able direction of Mrs. Harriet Roberson. The ninth grade classes participated in several different phases of work. They did interpretive and choral read- ing, parliamentary procedure and class- room discussions. The eighth grade classes were taught the fundamentals of public speaking and did brief surveys of various speech sit- uations. During the year the department has presented to the student body several plays. The first play titled “Old Ghosts At Home, and the second The Christ- mas Bug. Speech students represented our school in the Birmingham News, Civitan and American Legion oratorical contests. ART DEPT. This year the art classes of Johnston Jun- ior High School were under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Cunningham. The art program here consists of various varieties of art work. During the year the art students have participated in several poster contests. They have done some cer- amic work, tempera painting, and scale drawing. The pictures on this page depict different phases of the art program. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPT. The Industrial Arts curriculum at Johns- ton Junior High School consists of those courses, activities, or units of instruction designed to meet pupil needs which are out- growths of the industrial aspects of American democracy. Emphasis in instruction is placed upon social and personal needs re- lated to the use of industrial goods and serv- ices in home and community. Industrial art activities are, in general, exploratory in nature and continue to be ex- ploratory until pupils require more special- ized training the vocational trade and in- dustrial education. The program includes projects in wood, sheet metal, power tools, electricity, and general repair. Mr. Alton Campbell is the very capable teacher of our Industrial Arts Department. HOME EC DEPARTMENT The Johnston Junior High School Home Economics classes for the school year 1961- 62 are composed of approximately one hun- dred and sixty-five girls. These girls are interested in learning how to become good homemakers for the future. The program planned for home econom- ics students this year includes a number of varied activities including: child-care and development, home decorations, personal relationships, good grooming, foods and nutrition, and last of all, sewing. It is the hope of all concerned that each girl will be able to gain some information from each of these phases of home economics that will help them in later life to be better home- makers of tomorrow. The classes were under the leadership of Mrs. Peggy F. Burleson. at Johnston . . . Beauty . . The girls, The school. At night, At dawn, at dusk, at noon. Beauty . . . various fields of interests. The school program is so planned there are no study-halls or homerooms meeting in the library. This facilitates a more thorough library program by in- creasing the availability of its materials for the students. The main objective of the library is: to furnish adequate source materials for students and faculty, to encourage and promote the proper use of the library's various facilities, and to provide the student with a wide and varied selec- tion of wholesome, acceptable mater- ial to be read for pleasure. The library is under the capable leadership of Mr. McLeod. Mr. McLeod - Librarian Students at Work Card Catalog 1. Pansy Holley 2. Linda Cartwright 3. Gregory Smith 4. Linda Butler 5. Mary Merrill 6.
