Beginning band mem- bers are ad- vanced to the junior band as soon as ______________. they have shown suffi- cient pro- gress. The Junior High band is uniformed and have been a part of the many parades in our community since its organization a few years ago. They are invited to play at a Senior High football game each year and make us quite proud of them as they perform, especially dur- ing the half-time performance. Orchestra Junior High Orchestra is open to any student who has had at least one year of training on the violin. Other instruments are available for rent to those who have had for- mer musical training. Participat- ing in the Alabama State High School Orchestra is one of the ex- periences which these students look forward to all the year. An able speaker is an able person is the motto of the elec- tive eighth and ninth grade speech classes. Students gain self-confidence and poise through practice in public speak- ing and dramatics. Classes study the techniques of present- ing speeches in these methods: extemporaneous, memorized, read and impromptu with main emphasis on the extempora- neous method. All students have the opportunity to enter oratorical contests though it is not required that they do so. Our speakers have made worthy showings in all contests. Eighth grade classes study the history of drama and become acquainted with the stories of the Shakespearean plays and the biographies of great actors. Ninth grade classes each year present some dramatization from Shakespeare. During the school year 1954-1955 some memorable assembly programs have been: A Preview of Coming Attractions” to stimulate sale of an- nual. Thanks, Neighbor to inform about the United Appeal. What Makes It Tick? for American Education Week. A Book A Day for National Book Week. Sugar and Spice, a comedy. Peace on Earth, Christmas customs in other nations. And the Lamp Went Out, A melodrama in pantomime. Schools for Freedom, commemorating the founding of the P. T. A. Heritage of Wimpole Street, A drama for the State Drama Festival. The Comedy of Errors, an adaptation of the Shakespearean play. Stories, radio drama, pantomimes, parliamentary procedure, debates, party games, and choral reading have led students to conclude Speech is easy and speech is fun; everybody ought to take speech! The pictures on these pages are taken from some of the above activities and we can tell by them and what we have seen on our stage that everybody ought to take speech! Creative Writing Many things are taught in the creative writing classes but one of the most important things which is a result of these classes is our school paper Latin Latin is an elective for the eighth and ninth grades. It may be considered a dead language but the classes Algebra Ninth grade students may take either math or alge- bra. Here we see a class at work on some of their problems and another class listening to much needed explanation. Science Such terms as air age, atomic energy, and super- sonics, are evidence that we are rapidly increasing our knowledge in the field of science. It is the purpose of our science courses to offer the student a general and practical program. Events in the world of science are brought to us weekly by a paper published especially for that purpose and every student in these classes has a copy. «U W Hr Math is a required subject in the eighth and seventh grades. The students who are in the ninth grade have a choice of either math or algebra. Choral Choral Choral is offered to all three grades as an elective subject. During the school year, the choral groups perform at many functions such as special programs, assembly programs, and in the spring an annual con- cert.
