The National Beta Club is a non-secret service- achievement organization for students on the high school level. lt has as its obiectives: encouragement of effort during and after high school, stimulation of achievement, and promotion of character by fostering the ideals of honesty, service, and lead- ership. Johnston High School, as a state-accredited school, is eligible to have a chapter in the National XX B Beta Club Hmmm? Beta Club. Locally, membership is offered to boys and girls who achieve an average of 93 and main- tain an average of not less than 88. A department grade of C or an average of D on any subject automatically disqualifies any member. Johnston High School proudly salutes its Beta members, who individually and collectively are proving worthy of the respect and support of Student body and faculty. I am unable to concentrate on my iob which is chief engineer of the Packard Motor Car Company. The designing of the auto- mobile that has put Cadillac in the number two position has made me nervous and grouchy. After deciding that I need a long restful vacation to ease my tattered nerves, a brilliant thought flashed into my mind. I shall visit each person who was a senior in my class at Johnston High School. It will be most enioyable to see if my old classmates have prospered well in the seventeen years that have followed our graduation. Finally, after much planning and preparation, I am ready to depart on what I hope to be one of the most interesting vacations in my life. Upon entering Chicago, I find that I have developed a very painful toothache. After making a few inquiries, I find that there is a capable dentist within the vicinity. Hurrying to the office building and looking on the direct- ary, whose name should I see but Dr. J. L. Bledsoe, D.D.S. Forgetting my aching tooth, I hurry to his office. Upon entering, I receive another shock, for who should be J. L's receptionist but Mary Busch. After talking with them for awhile, J. L. invites me to his home for supper. On the way out he tells me that our old class is located in Chicago at this particular time and that we shall tour Chicago and visit each one. Here is a summary of what we saw: Matilda Cheatham is still running across the continent with her husband, Albert. She has been from Maine to California a hundred times. She still wonders if he will ever settle down. Sue Carol Derrick has become the most famous woman wrestler in the world. Going by the name of Sluggin' Sue. she strikes fear in the hearts of her contestants.. Janice Doscher is a great singer. At least, she is one mentally, if not vocally. Just as soon as she learns to turn her tone images into audible sounds, she will have all the leading prima donnas looking up the first train for home. Ansel Forrest has become one of the world's greatest orators. He was making a speech that night in the Chicago Municipal Stadium on To Be or Not To Bel Everette Gibson has become the personal lawyer of Marilyn Monroe. He still asks himself the question, Why couldn't this have happened I5 years sooner? Donna Gillie has made a fortune from her new book, The Practical Way to Get.Your Man. I remembered how Donna used to solve my love problems for me. Now I know why I never got married. Page Thirty Jo Ann Herlong has achieved fame as the premiere danseuse of the Russian Dancers, the Chinese Ballet, and the Topeka Tap Dancers. She has been married and divorced three times. Being noted for her grace, beauty, and originality of dances, she has introduced popular ballroom steps, The Grapevine Glide, and the Thistledown Floatg however, she is more interested in interpretative and classical dancing. She belongs to the Heel and Toe Club of which she is a great hoofer. Naturally one of her hobbies is the prevention of corns. R. B. McCIendon, top auctioneer of McClendon, McClendon, and McCIendon, still brags about the time when he auctioned off the Golden Gate Bridge. Recently, he has been working on the Empire State Building. Ilsuppose that Mrs. Gaskin could have predicted this, because R. B. surely could iabber in typing class. A , James Ouzts has become a famous orchestra leader. James has been developing a new fype of music, unprogressive iazz. He is the Composer of The Third Floor Suite, Con- certo in A Flat, and Air for the 'Saxophone and the Tuba. He is a member of the Independent Order of Piccolo Players. Mary Ruth Randall is the world's champion stock car driver. Mary Ruth had come by my house many times flying with the wind, but never did I suspect anything like this. Tell me, Mary Ruth, are you very fast with the men? Frankie Rawl is a famous international gambler. Frankie said that after graduation, his father gave him five dollars. With this he went to Las Vegas and broke the bank thirty nights in succession. Frankie said that he didn't have a thing to worry about except the women after his money. On our iourney around Chicago we could not find Harry Taylor. Dissatisfied with the women on earth, he took a rocket ship to Mars. He must have liked them there, for no one has heard of him since. Bobo Waters has established a chain of stores on every beach in the U. S. A. They sell cat clothes, square hair cuts, shag lessons, and everyday beach bum items. Bobo tells me that it's guaranteed to make a cat out of you. Jo Ann Watson is still trying to find her ideal. She's done everything from baby-sitting to lap-sitting with her boss. Still no success! Keep trying, Jo Ann, he must be somewhere. Jimmy Wright is still trying to prove Galileo's law of falling bodies. Recently he caused a national crisis by trying to find out which would fall faster, a battleship or a feather. I found Margie Wright, a very charming, domestic type of girl, however, she has a slight inferiority complex due to the unfortunate fact that once she placed secoiid in the worldwide intelligence contest at M. I. T. When I visited her home, she had iust had a conference with the M. I. T. professors. She is always trying to prove who is the smartest. Carroll Yonce is the greatest evangelistic preacher of his day. Something has always bothered me about Carroll. Why is it he carries nothing but women on his tours? Now that I know all of my old classmates ,are doing well in their businesses, I feel much better. A month of being with them has really cooled me down. Now I can go back and design another automobile. Last Will and Testament Of Class of 1953 -if f X pf If 4 ff? Gi! by' DAVID EVERETTE GIBSON, Class Lawyer My friends, I have called you to assemble here as a solemn duty, that you the heirs and assigns of my respected client, the class of 1953, may hear her last will and testa- ment, which, as her legal advisor, I drew, as directed by her, immediately prior to her passing from our presence. By the authority invested in me by my client, the late senior class of 1953, I do declare this last will and testa- ment of hers to be aufhentic and hereby revoking any similar contracts that might have been drawn up. She has dealt with you according to your own merits and trusts that there will be no slight discrepancies, apparent iniustices, or partiality shown any particular person in her premeditated distribution. And in this manner do we dispose of our possessions: I, J. L. Bledsoe, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Cy Quattlebaum my privilege of having false teeth before finishing high school. Cy, they add dignity and sophistica- tion to any man. I,' Clifford Boatwright, do hereby give, devise, and be- queath to Freddie Wood my electronic brain. From a tough algebra problem to the most unusual girls it hasn't failed me yet. Well, maybe once or twice. I. Mary Bush, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Peggy Morris my extreme tallness. With all this height, Peggy, you might wind up a successful typing teacher some day. I, Matilda Cheatham, do hereby give, devise, and be- queath to all the girls of Johns'on High some advise. Married life is wonderful, and there's nothing like it, absolutely nothing! I, Sue Carol Derrick, do hereby give, devise and be- queath to Montez Satcher my friendly way. I, Everette Gibson, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to any one who might care to solicit it, all my love. Girls, this is the one break for which you've all been waiting. I, Donna Gillie, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Suzie lCoffeeJ Crouch my position on the basketball team. Be sure to bring a cushion to all the games, that bench is hardl I, Joanne Herlong, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Suzanne Crouch my quietness and good behavior in history class. Deportment grades count too, you know. I, R. B. McCIendon, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Cy Quattlebaum my outstanding English grades and to Cecil Younce, Jr. my square haircut. Keep up the good work fellows. I, James Ouzts, do hereby give, devise and bequeath to Rex Hall my typing ability. The pause that refreshes isn't between strokes, Rex! I, Mary Ruth Randall, do hereby give, devise, and be- queath to Emily Rhoden my quiet way in classes. Emily, this means not to have the teacher tell you to shut-up over ten times during any period. 1, Frankie Rawl, do hereby give, devise and bequeath to Rex Hall my typing speed. Rex, this means over 4 1f2 words per minute. I, Harry Taylor, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Edward Satcher my skill of passing world history. Eddie, if at first you don't succeed, try, try, and try again. I, Bobo Waters, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Freddie Wood and Jimmy Eidson my pegged pants, square haircut, and girl catching charm. Remember fellows, it pays to be a cat . I, Carroll Yonce, do hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Professor Billy Gaskin my outstanding football skill. Billy, your intelligence is surpassed only by your prize- winning physique. We, the class of 1953, do hereby give, devise, and be- queath to the young and unsophisticated Freshman a map of the school building so that they can find their classes! We, the class of 1953, do hereby give, devise, and be- queath to our good friends, the Sophomore class, our patience. It will be found useful as the only means by which they can endure the Juniors. We, the class of 1953, do hereby give, devise, and be- queath to the Junior class, reluctantly but of necessity, our mantle of dignity. We realize that the class can never fill it, but, since it is expected of them, our advice is, Grin and wear it. We, the class of 1953, do hereby give, devise, and be- queath to our dear old school building itself, the peaceful quiet caused by our absence and any apple cores, wads of gum, or crumpled notes we may have left about. We, the class of 1953, do hereby give, devise and be- queath ta the entire faculty of Johnston High our very kindest regards and our sincere gratitude for their unfailing kind- ness and aid. In witness whereof we, the class of 1953, the testator, have set our hand and seal on this Sth. day of May in the year of 1953. Page Thirty-One My Qiwzbm comm ensv mme M! With spirit that could not be denied, the boys came through with surprise wins over tough opposition. Not counting the win in the Augusta Trade Tournament, the boy's record up to date is 6 wins and 5 losses. With a few of the boys who have been the spark- plugs, leaving via graduation, we are expecting the substitutes to carry on the tradition of the Fighting Bears in years to come. Girls' Basketball The Johnston High Girl's Basketball Team playing with practically a new team, started out the 1952-53 season with spirit and cooperation. Although at times, the score was in the opponent's favor, the girls showed themselves at all times to be alert in fighting for the ball. ln the years to come, watch out for the Johnston High Girls! We are expecting them to win the District 3 Tourn- ament. Their record to date is 2 wins and 9 losses. However, the season was not completed before material for the annual was sent in.
