xi X 4---- I T limffblxx X fffx 9' Th1rteen years ago eleven eager small fry determmed to get an educat1on entered Johnston Kmder garten They were Ruth Crane Barb Schuessler Rosalte Lutz Pat Hunt Wanda Sellner Lo1s Brown L1la Tasler Ron Fralzer Max westby Merle Heskett and Major Goodman Our teacher Mrs Young quxst ass1gned each of us a speclal locker and were we proudl We worked very hard learmng to prmt our names and to s11de down the shde tn our room Naturally w1th all thxs hard work to do we became very t1red consequently we had to take a nap on our httle rugs every day We found II a httle hard to observe all the rules for gettmg along together and from t1me to trme our th1rst for knowledge was dampened somewhat by the spank1ngs la1d on by the none too soft hand of our teacher But anyway we made xt to f1rst grade where Mrs Rutgers was wa1t1ng for us w1th outstretched arms We had a gay t1me m f1rst grade we learned to read a lxttle we bought savtngs stamps and we made beauuful mus1c m our rhythm band We really hked th1s band because we could make so much leg1t1mate notse and we could dress 1n costume too We sttll had our noon day naps to keep us brtght and alert Donn1e and Nathan Crowell Shlrley Wmters Susan Dunn Rlchard Hawbaker and Grandvllle Wheeler Jomed us rn second grade Mrs Wllson started r1ght tn teachlng us to wr1te and to solve some pretty dtfflcult sums hke 5+ 2 But Mrs W1lson dtdn t bel1eve tn all work and no play she was a good sport and taught us to play baseball and to mount butterfhes We also had a maypole dance ln the sprtng and took a hrke to see some rabbtts We were supposed to be b1g enough now to take ll so we d1dn t get any more naps We went cheerfully on to th1rd grade where Carol Gardner Joxned our group Mxss Payton and Mrs Warner worked hard to put creases tn our httle brams We learned to tell trme and then spent most of ll watchtng the clock so we could be ready for recess Th1s was the year that M1ss Maxson taught us the Mtnuet wh1ch we performed for our pleased mamas and daddtes who declared that we couldn t have been cuter The next year found us ln fourth grade where we made llfe alternately sweet and sour for M1ss Orcutt Mrs Warner and Mrs Schuyler Thls was the year that balloon poppmg became the fad All pup1ls who got 100 per cent 1n spelhng were g1ven balloons and ll d1dn t take us long to puncture them We never fxgured out why we recexved balloons for 100 per cent xn spelling but only had our names posted on the blackboard for 100 per cent 1n arttthmetlc Alan Fxck Jotned us tn the s1xth grade That year 1n an amateur contest sponsored by the P T A Carol Gardner w1th a plano solo and Merle Heskett w1th a read1ng won prlzes We gave the play Boots and the Ktng and also put on a Chrxstmas play at Camp Dodge Our entrance mto seventh grade was a full scale movmg day All of uS were UBDDY I0 Collect UH' Z ,: W m c T 5 Tw 7 H H x f iv, ff xl xg J EL f ' 'L
