CHARLES S. VARNER Superintendent M.A. Drake University B. A. Macalester College ,wa ' To the Seniors of 1956: Congratulations! You have now completed your high school education, which is a big achievement, but you must keep on learning and growing in the years to come. The satisfaction which comes from having given one's best, and the broader understanding which results from having increased one's knowledge wherever possible, are rewards worth working for. Not many people accomplish all that they are capable of doing, but Ihope you will resolve to be among those few. Best wishes for the future. Lutz Pat Hunt Wanda Sellner Lo1s Brown L1la Tasler Ron Fralzer Max westby Merle Heskett and Major Goodman Our teacher Mrs Young quxst ass1gned each of us a speclal locker and were we proudl We worked very hard learmng to prmt our names and to s11de down the shde tn our room Naturally w1th all thxs hard work to do we became very t1red consequently we had to take a nap on our httle rugs every day We found II a httle hard to observe all the rules for gettmg along together and from t1me to trme our th1rst for knowledge was dampened somewhat by the spank1ngs la1d on by the none too soft hand of our teacher But anyway we made xt to f1rst grade where Mrs Rutgers was wa1t1ng for us w1th outstretched arms We had a gay t1me m f1rst grade we learned to read a lxttle we bought savtngs stamps and we made beauuful mus1c m our rhythm band We really hked th1s band because we could make so much leg1t1mate notse and we could dress 1n costume too We sttll had our noon day naps to keep us brtght and alert Donn1e and Nathan Crowell Shlrley Wmters Susan Dunn Rlchard Hawbaker and Grandvllle Wheeler Jomed us rn second grade Mrs Wllson started r1ght tn teachlng us to wr1te and to solve some pretty dtfflcult sums hke 5+ 2 But Mrs W1lson dtdn t bel1eve tn all work and no play she was a good sport and taught us to play baseball and to mount butterfhes We also had a maypole dance ln the sprtng and took a hrke to see some rabbtts We were supposed to be b1g enough now to take ll so we d1dn t get any more naps We went cheerfully on to th1rd grade where Carol Gardner Joxned our group Mxss Payton and Mrs Warner worked hard to put creases tn our httle brams We learned to tell trme and then spent most of ll watchtng the clock so we could be ready for recess Th1s was the year that M1ss Maxson taught us the Mtnuet wh1ch we performed for our pleased mamas and daddtes who declared that we couldn t have been cuter The next year found us ln fourth grade where we made llfe alternately sweet and sour for M1ss Orcutt Mrs Warner and Mrs Schuyler Thls was the year that balloon poppmg became the fad All pup1ls who got 100 per cent 1n spelhng were g1ven balloons and ll d1dn t take us long to puncture them We never fxgured out why we recexved balloons for 100 per cent xn spelling but only had our names posted on the blackboard for 100 per cent 1n arttthmetlc Alan Fxck Jotned us tn the s1xth grade That year 1n an amateur contest sponsored by the P T A Carol Gardner w1th a plano solo and Merle Heskett w1th a read1ng won prlzes We gave the play Boots and the Ktng and also put on a Chrxstmas play at Camp Dodge Our entrance mto seventh grade was a full scale movmg day All of uS were UBDDY I0 Collect UH' Z ,: W m c T 5 Tw 7 H H x f iv, ff xl xg J EL f ' 'L belongtngs at Camp Dodge and nn ve back tu Johnston We won the magaztne sale Ronme Fratzer was the somewhat dlsappotnted hlgh salesman smce h1s reward turned out to be a rubber Indtan lnstead of the anttctpated radtc We beat the etghth grade rn basketball but we lost tn f otball We put on a program ft r the etghth grade and they gave us a party We took a htke to see the Ptoneer Seed Corn Company We also had a Hey Bob Safety program that year The Mothers gave us a Halloween party for whtch we dressed tn castume We made the most of II too you never saw more spooky spooks or ghosty ghosts When we entered the etghth grade John Ltnder and B111 Moon Jomed us We d1dn t realtze how much nur seventh grade teachers loved us unttl we dtscovered that they had all dectded to work on us tn the etghth grade I don t know what Mr Smtth and the band would have done wtthout us elght of us grabbed lnstru ments and went to work wtth a w1ll We were 'tumxltated tn the magazme sale by the seventh grade who utsold us by a country mtle and we had to gtve them a b1g party We got back some of our self respect though when we made a name for ourselves by wtnntng the Polk County Jumor Hlgh School Basketball tournament Graduat1on from etghth grade was a btg event Now we were ready for seats tn the assembly Freshman year me were jolned by the ktds from Herrold Carroll Brown George Heckman Marvln for a whtle but the other classes tn htgh school soon brought our heads back to s1ze Our teachers that year were Mr Sloan who was also our sponsor Mrs Cassaday Mr Schuler and Mrs Berry Our sophomore year must have been quxte dull and uneventful for none of us can now recall that we dtd anythmg that year of world shakmg tmportance We dtd take 1n several new members Charlene Brafford Paul Elwell Larry Huth Barb Maher Dave McPherson and Kenneth Palmer We spent much of our J untor year looktng ahead to the t1me when we would occupy the Sentors seats nder Mrs Keeton s d1rect1on we put on the play Crazy But Cute in wluch Rtchard Hawbaker and Carol Gardner starred we had charge of the candy gum and pop conoesstons at the ball games We carefully hoarded the money we made for the year s btg event the Jumor Semor Banquet For the banquet lv chose a magtc theme and tmported an honest to goodness maglcxan to entertain us At last we are Sentors Mrs Scott wxll be our sponsor and w1ll gtve us much needed counsel. We have added a new member Joy McBr1de Somehow we aren t qulte so thrllled at the prospect of betng graduated and leavmg htgh school as we thought we would be But there are many b1g moments havtng our ptctures taken at Woltz Studtos weartng our class nngs presennng the play Fog Island fwe had a lot of fun dotng thxs and thought our acung was pretty htdl classj and workmg on the yearbook We are lookmg forward to Baccalaureate and Commencement When we are graduated we hope that xt WILL be a commencement for all of us the begmntng of our educatton not the end , x 1 v l , .
