Homer fb ji Darrc S is E'-Q Qu x...q C huc N NN SBUIDI' 3, li15f01'Q xg rly one bright September morning in 1939, forty ve children enrolled atthe Johnston School This was a record class for enrollment in Kinder garten Nine brave little souls remained tofinish 'W ey were Dixie Clover, Suezanne Bilz, .Iacquelyn Longshore, Darrell Seibert, David Schuessler, Bill Peterson, Homer Betz, Dick Rock, and Charles Howe That year everyone brought his little rug and all took naps That was back in the good old days We really thought we were big when they let us take part in a Mother Goose Program with the First and Second grades Miss Pilmer, our teacher, left us in the Spring to get married, and Mrs Marjorie Rittgers had the pleasure of our company the rest of the year She sent us all on to First grade This year the same little cheery group entered Miss Lohr's First grade Here the main things we began to learn were penmanship and reading Pete LJ 'ff built a play house and invited other grades to play X house with us ,S In Second grade, Donald Ge.ndy joined our ranks? This was the year that mischievous little Bill recovered from the shock and had threatened him did not put them in her desk any more sternly, he in her coat closet instead' he put them Now we ated from Third grade were cn the first floor We had gradu the basement Mrs Benshoff was our teacher Carol Inman came to back us up this year I don't believe any of us forgot the narrow escape we had this year when the chimney of the school building was struck by lightning and fell :Lnour room one morning before school had taken p Back to the basement we went and finished the school year in our old Kindergarten room Mrs Murray had the pleasure?? of teaching us in Fourth grade She conducteda Valentine contest which we all worked hard to win Carol Inman de cided to take a vacation from us, so we let Roger Tasler take her place We won the Rhythm Band contest at West Des Moines that year for the first time We built an Indian village asaclass project In the Fifth grade our teacher was Mrs Baker At the first of the year we made a rule that you couldn't run on the stairs If you were caught five times in one week, you got a spanking on Friday Bill Peterson and Donald Gandy were caught five times and received the grand prize come Friday afternoon Donella Crowell came to take a chance on us about the middle of this year In Sixth grade, Mrs Manny directed us in play called How Boots Fooled The King Incide ally this won the Academy Award out 'N-5' We inv ed the ird, Fourth, and Fifth grades to watc production Later in the year, we invite Fl! grade to visit the Historical Building with us ck 15 ss?- I Dove Jackie ff Cl 1 f f---1: -I I I .is U f ,f 'ml Q' ,H ' ' x 1 y I ' I F If L g 1 . . This was our first year selling magazines, and we lost to the Eighth grade. So Valentines Day we treated them to a party. During the year Mrs. Dowling fell and broke her leg, so we did all we could to help her. Having completed Seventh grade, we entered Eighth and had Mrs. McCall and Mrs. Ballou for our teachers. Tom Naylor and Bill Thornburg joined us. We won thenmgazine contest this year, and Dixie Clover was high salesman. She won a certificate for selling 886 in magazines. Darrell Seibert was a close second. Mrs. Ballou took us on our skip day to Camp Dodge for a picnic. Then came the great day of Commence- ment. Chuck Howe was our honor student. How we entered the pearly gates of High School, only to see the work of the devil during initiation. We would never h ve pulled through if Joanne Heidman, Phyllis Martin, Jerry Clark, Thurmadene Lester, Carol Inman, Floyd Boyer and Jean Mathews hadn't Joined us this year The girls wore real shor dresses, holey hose, tennis shoes, hair in at least 7 pigtails one day, and straight as a string the next The boys wore T shirts and neckties, L1'l Abner shoes, short pants, and make up We all wore old straw hats and rattles around our necks Come Friday afternoon, it was altogether ahappy time with egg shampoos and eating chocolate pudding blindfolded In our Sophomore year, Hrs Keeton tour the Register and Tribune building lobby Joan Hertz and Jim vr Meer joined over our English class, which turned into took the Geography class to We saw the new globe in the this year Mr Howards took a regular circus Our Junior year was a busy one Mrs Keaton directed our class play 'The Tangled Yarn W we were lucky to be the first ones to use the stage in our new gym On April 21, the Junior Senior Banquet was held We met at the YWCA building The Junior Class sang a few songs W had refreshments of ice cream and cake Then we all went to the KRNT Theater and saw the Broadway stage play 'Kiss Me Kate ' Carol Inman and Joanne Heidman were the Homecoming attendants Two more people entered our On top the year we class rings Senior year class this year, Betty Forret and Victor Fiebig at last' It hardly seems true, but here we are This is got to work on the school paper and the annual We got our the first week of school, aawe could enjoy them during our we had our graduation pictures taken by Woltz Studios Harry Hyde and Ruth Bingham came magraduate with us Thurmadene Lester was our Homecoming Queen Joanne Heidman was the Princess We were very proud of the girls They were lovely Now that we are completing our Senior year, some of us dread having to leave the old school after spending so many years in its halls When G Over' Nf'r ll A I uf-1 PH- Fou Huw G-r Qdt e-H4432-9 ,G .
