Norma, Margaret Laurence, Ruth, Nancy, Sally, Dick and Bob H. adjusted themselves readily tofindergartemand under Miss P:llmer's guidance built their grocery store, played in the doll house, and took naps on their little rugs so faithfully, that at the end of the year they were promoted to first grade. First grade--Margaret beamed when she saw pretty Miss George, and re- solved to get rid of her bad habits. First-graders joined with the second- graders and took first place in the rhythm band. Second grade--Finally the burden of our class was shifted to Miss Fitz- simmon's shoulders. By this time we could all read comic books. To add to the class, a little cherub joined up--Betty Olsasky. It was our class that started the chain stores of A Q P. They started from our small store in the second grade. Third grade--Now we really climbed the ladder--we had reached second floor. Miss Lang thought she taught us our multiplication table. Mrs. Varner disillusioned us shortly after we enrolled for Business Arithmetic. Fourth grade--Nancy Hummel couldn't resist our class so she returned to help us make Miss Douglas happy. We also picked up Shirley D., Gene, and Marvin. Betty felt she needed a rest from this class so she left us for a while o Fifth grade--Bob L. and Shirley 0. joined our fighting forces. Betty also rejoined us. Instead of flying saucers being popular with the boys, flying paper wads were more popular. This soon ended with a punishment of filling quart Jars with chewing wads. While the boys were busy filling their quart Jars, the girls made castles. It was Larry who helped us put over our Mexican Festival by bringing sombreros and Mexican clothing. ,,4 . and f-H if 1.- Jflv .MTW W Sixth grade--It's a bird! It's a plane! What is it?? Oh! Dorothy C. and Richard H. arriving. Sallie Stirts returned because she found life too dull at Urbandale, without us. Dick D. started Dorothy's day out right with one of his mad kisses. Our class put on a program for the P.-T.A. The boys had a stilt march and the girls jumped rope to the rhythm of the music. Our Junior high teachers were Mrs. Ballm1andMrs. Dowling. We increased our knowledge by having NSpell-downsn and Arithmetic Contests. It was in the Eighth Grade that we re-fought the Civil War--Johnstonians vs. Dogpatchers led by Norma Bianchi CRunny Meringueb. Norma clubbed an innocent Johnstonian bystander CDick D. was the guilty offenderl. But of course, the Dogpatch team won. We also won the magazine contest in Eighth Grade, and the Seventh Grade had to treat us. Ninth grade--Forced to leave our Civil War weapons behind, we gggwlgg into the assembly. We were badly in need of help so Dorothy M., Gladys B. Walter R., Jim A., and Howard S. joined our regiment. Initiation time rolled around and did we suffer! The boys had war paint on their faces, their pants rolled above their knees,tee-shirts with bow ties, plow shoes, and no socks. The girls wore high heels, anklets, old skirts, blouses, no make-up, and their hair in braids. Mr. and Mrs. Varner, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Sproul, and Mr. Schuler were our teachers. Tenth grade--This was a pretty peaceful year for the teachers. We were all on our best behavior. Why? We don't know. After failing our mission of destroying the school last year,we decided to put it off until our Senior year. Eleventh grade--We sent for reinforcements, but all we got was Jim G.l Naturally being Juniors, we put on a Junior play called NWe Shook The Family Tree.W This big headache fell upon Mr. Howards. It made a big hit on John- ston Avenue. After the play the class decided to go to the show at Highland Park. On the way certain members of the class got a ticket for speeding. For the Junior and Senior Banquet we shed our country rags and dressed up like city-slickers. Twelfth grade--Ah! Look, kids, we made it! If you don't believe us, we'll show you the bills for our pictures and rings. We really hit the Jack- pot at Home-coming this year. Besides our Shirley Danielson being crowned Queen of festivities, Norma Bianchi was a Princess, so we were pretty proud of our girls. Then our Pep leaders being all Seniors, Norma, Ruth, and Rich, who had done us all proud, had to break in some under classmen to that job. We're almost to the end of the line. A few short weeks of classes, a class-play make the 1951 class remembered, and the formalities of gradua- tion will be upon us, all too soon. Mr. Varner who has been our true friend and guide--lo, these fgur years--will say,UThis is as far as you go. Now get out! We need your room.H Do we see a tear in his eye or are those tears in ours as we wave Johnston High a last Ngood-bye.U Aa v'---on--5 MnV Y' ,ry 4,1 .J ' HowARO S-Ml.- . E TLASS PRQPHECYE From near and far the class of 1951 is gathering for its reunion with Mr. Howards. You have all heard of Mr. Howards, the great oil tycoon. We vowed that we would return to the scene of our crimes in ten years' time, so here we are. Here we have a celebrity--our newly-elected king of the hobosl Dick Dunn. At this moment he is talking to Norma Bianchi, who is blowing plastic bubbles at the dime store. In her spare time she writes detective stories for the NScream Magazine.N Her old side-kick, Ruth Hesseltine, just arrived from Arizona where she is the world's champion bronc rider and calf roper. Bob Leonard now owns the famous gambling Casino at Monte Carlo where you can see him every night behind the roulette wheel, sideburns and all-- HStickie-fingers Bohn they call him. Marv Boston now owns Thrift Way, Inc. where he gives away a package of gum when his customers have been faithful for ten years. We just received ours! Here comes Shirley Orr who has gained no little fame by having quintu- plets, the first quints since the Dionnes. Dort Crowell is now the manager of the Globe Trotters, and a very successful team it is. Jim Gilligan is the head garbage collector for Washington C. C., and believe me, there is a large amount of garbage. He also delivers special letters for the White House. and look who's in the White House! It's Betty Olsasky the first woman president of the United States. And naturally her chief of Staff is none other than our own General Robert Harvey who saved the world from World War III, when he took General McArthur's placejJ1Korea, Also, we all admire Betty greatly for the way she handled Russia--marrying Joe Stalin was a stroke of genius. Well, if here isn't NBugsH Baker CLarryJ who took over Mickie Cohen's place as Lord of the Underworld. You remember that Police Chief Anderson shot Mickie when he tried to escape from Jail. Jim got his basic training in Mr. Smith's Government class. We had a hard time getting Howard Stifel to say he would come, he didn't think it was proper since he was the President honor. We expect Walter Robinette hereif'he can get to be seen at the reunion of Alcoholics Anonymous--this he considers a high away from his many fans. He is the leading crooner of the nation. The fried chickens for this celebration were donated by Gladys Boyer from her huge chicken ranch in western Wyoming. In her spare time she colors Easter eggs. Look who's coming Gorgeous Gene Tasler, no less. television, and of course, his has taught himahJ.he knows--His in now! See the long curls and velvet robe-- We are told he makes millions wrestling on manager is with him. Believe me his manager manager? Why,Dot Mosier, his wife, naturally Alda Strieff is perhaps the most dignified of our alumni. She runs a home for homeless dogs and cats in Paris. And our friend, Richard Howley, is here, too. Of course you saw his picture in Look Magazine when he took over the presidency of Sweetheart Soap Company. They say he's really cleaning up! Margaret Foshe has been here waiting for us for quite some time. You knew that she took Mrs. Varner's place teaching Shorthand. She really is terrific. Shirley Danielson has made quite a business flying mountain goats from Calcutta India to Moscow. Phe-e-ew!!! here she comes now. Oh yes, here's our friend Sallie You've read her column in and last our construction construction. The sign on on terms. See Hummel, the Well, all enthusiasm, so chicken left. Stirts. She too, is quite a celebrity. Perhaps the New York Times--Sallie's Advice to the Men. engineer, Nancy Hummel. She specializes in bridge her door reads, Painless Hummel. Teeth extracted Humane, today. are here, and gathered around the table with their old-time we had better make an end to this or there won't be any fried DM ---- SS 5-'nm-'lH'Q 1 ,Bl ,,,,,., -Lf , fl,-Q 'Q M ' '72 -- - ,....i-Q 1-a , -xx W- - ears-'I-.4 -5: .... . ...1. -.. , ...,..,.... 5 'fp-In Q V N E .Q N X W ff 4193! u S rf ,'. e lb ,Q 44x 1 P lr.
