Learning at Johnston County Training School is centered around new discoveries, new ideals, and new develop- ments. Early morning 'classes advanced math studies, and third year language COLITSES. They also helped to provide an experimental year at J.C.T.S . and found companion- ship in friends. We advanced mentally and physically in sports and become leaders in activities . Through this wide variety, students were also able to further their future goals. To preserve a record of these moments and the countless other ex- periences of ourselves and our classmates, this annual strives to capture the eyes and mind of the scholarship, the leadership, the activities and the character of Johnston County Training School. I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those persons who worked so faithfully and diligently to make possible the 1964- 1965 edition. This room is the dornain of the Superintendent of Johnston County Schools, a good reason for the sound of busy action. The Superintendent is Mr. E. S. Simsong and his job with the help of the Assistant Super- intendents, Mr. Lewis and Mr. Long, and of the School Board, is to regulate the activities of all the schools in Johnston County. Mr. Jasper Lewis, Assistant Superintendent Mr. J. Burke Long, Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Cora A. Boyd, Supervisor 8 MEET OUR NEW PRINCIPALS To: Members of the 1965 Graduating Class My de ar seniors: You have almost approached a point where you can proudly look back over your ' accomplishments of twelve years of public school education. We are doing our best to prepare you for this great hour. We hope that each of you will be prepared to meet the challenges which await you -- Such as college, vocational, industrial and tech- nical education. lt is our hope that you will be able to take your places beside high school graduates of other schools in the institutions of higher learning . Opportunities for high school graduates are unlimited for those who have the desire and courage to work hard, concentrate and sacrifice. You must never let frolic and frills take pre- cedence over virtue and determination. As your school has helped you, we are count- ing on you to help others. The education which you received here is the springhood to your desires, ambitions, expectations, and your destiny. If you have made wise use of your days here at j.C.T.S . , developed wholesome interests and attitudes and learned to live with others, then success for you is inevitable . We are aware of the many problems that may fall in your path. Regardless of the magnitude of your problems, your Alma Mater is willing and able to help you. Our guidance department will be at your service if you need help even though you may have finished school here. Lastly, acknowledge your loyalty, confidence and appreciation of your Alma Mater by exemplifying the wholesome traits and manners which we have attempted to teach and portray here, maintain an active membership in your Alumni Associa- tion, and stay in contact with and mpport your school. These teachers, besides teaching a full schedule of classes, help around the school in a wide variety of activi- ties -- Iudicary Committee, Football, and Dramatics -- to name only a few. 5 Mrs. Carolyn G. In today's world, with the ever-great emphasis on science, satellite and research, the ability to express oneself in mathematical terms is becoming increasingly important. Although many of the events happened long ago, they have much bearing on our present world. It is necessary to know about the past in forming our ideas and opinions on the present and the future events. World History, a subject which spans the beginning of the world to the present day, gives us an overall picture of how the leading nations of the world today acquired their power, and the importance of people who played leading roles. United States History, a study of the past but a subject for the future, stresses the point of the United States independence and the acceptance by other nations of America as a world power. History also enters into today's world affairs between countries. Without a knowledge of other nations' customs it would be impossible to maintain a democratic government. OF 365 A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. In the year of 1961, a group of some 120, more or less, passengers boarded a ship. The name of the ship was Opportunities to Success. Each student had a round trip ticket with an expiration of june 1965 . The sea was calm but at times it was often raging and restless. We set sail on this new sea because there was new knowledge to be gained and new experiences to be encountered which would bring us closer to success. Our first job aboard was to elect the officers of our ship. Our advisors were Mrs. Geiger, Mr. Rain- bow, Mr. Emmis, Mrs. Ennis, and Mrs. M. A. McNeil. Captain Ernestine Kent, Co-captain Vivian johnson, Secretary Mary Eggleston, and Assistant Secretary Brenda Atkinson were elected. We found out that our passengers were very active and versatile . They participated in many of the activities and they were superb in dramatics, the cheering squad, the choral club, athletics, and the band. They played a very active role throughout the remaining four years of the trip. As the first year of our trip drew nigh, we found ourselves anchored in the land of Sophomores. We realized that we had reached only half of our first step toward success, the land of hope. Before we began our cruise through this unknown land, we re -organized our crew. Our advisors were Miss Blair, Mrs. Ennis, and Mrs. M. A. McNeil. Captain Mary Eggleston, Co-captain I-Iopie Smith, Secretary Vivian johnson, Assistant Secretary Jacqueline Barbour steered the ship. Many exciting events took place aboard ship during this year, for instance, Ernestine Kent was noted as personality of the month, Vernell McClain won the title of Miss Versitility. During the Grade Tournament our girls won a trophy as the best cheering squad, Qthey'll do it everytime!j, and our boys won a trophy as first place champions. We could properly take pride that the eagerness and enthusiasm we felt when we first boarded the ship was still alive. The very fact that the Junior Class turned in so impressive a performance in the past two years added urgency to the need for incentives to help it turn in an even more impressive performance in 1963 -64. This we did very impressively. - 69 Our first aim, reorganization. Our advisors were Mr. Murphy, Nlrs. Ennis, and Mr. Boone. Our officers were Captain Maurice Bell, Co-captain Hopie Smith, Secretary Christine Clements, and Assistant Secretary jacqueling Barbour. l The highlights of this year were our Sweater Ball, junior Week . . . one of our charming lassies, Carolyn Sanders, was chosen Miss junior. Lee Liles was named Mr. Junior. Hopie Smith was elected president of the Student Council by the overwhelming majority of the student body . . . five of our crew member, Jacqueline Barbour, Foraker Felder, Maurice Bell, I-Iopie Smith and Christine Clements were initiated into the National Honor Society . . . our junior-Senior Prom was tops! Our theme Roman Holiday, was dejected in every speech, song and definitely in the scenery. Participating in the graduation exercises were, Maurice Bell, Carol L. johnson, Foraker Felder, I-Iopie Smith, jacque- line Barbour, and Christine Clements. , Before we realized it our journey was drawing to an end. They cry of the year, Don't give up the ship, rang in the ears of many. Our advisors were, Mrs. Ennis, Mr. Dublin, and Mr. Boone. Captain Maurice Bell, Co-captain Hopie Smith, Secretary Lee Liles, and Assistant Secretary Malchomn Howard directed the course . Many great adventures beckon to us in the future: the Senior -Parent Banquet, Class Day, Class Night . . . and then, voyage completed, graduation! Upon completion of our voyage, we must agree, These were times that try men's souls. We could never adequately express our gratitude to our principal, Mr. J. F. McNeil as well as the teachers, and parents who helped us. Oh time, I would hold you in my clasp, hold the cherished moments a little longer! But, we must say Bon Voyage . If 9 ,Pi ZSREEP EN SCENCE gr' TEARBOUK STAFF What comes with graduation, is dressed in some mysterious color, and is awaited by al- most every J. C. T. S. student? It is the Hawk, of course, produced by the I. C. T. S. yearbook staffs. With drooping eyes but a willingness to work, the editorial staff met at four each after- noon to begin their work. The added attraction of coffee and donuts helped to make every- thing even more fun. The first duty of the staff was to plan attractive layouts for the book. Then careful attention was given to planning clever pictures which were taken by our photog- rapher Alex Riveria. Imagination was put to work in writing catchy headlines and interesting stories. A Vivian johnson and Maurice Bell, co-editors, planned the opening section and saw that everything ran smoothly for the other members. Ernestine Kent was in charge of the classes, while Jackie Barbour dealt with students from seniors to freshmen in the friends section. Brenda Atkinson and Cecelia Barnes recorded all the clubs and extracurricular ftm in the activities section, and Foraker Felder edited the ever-important sports section.
