In making the '62 Hawk, it is our intention to present a few glimpses of this passing cenerama . . . some of the people . . some of the places . . . some of the events. Thus, we proudly present the 1962 Hawk. The Editor Charles Mitchell 2 , 'X 06 V xg xg J. Kenneth Murphy Qu! Miss B. B. Sones Miss E. V. Bonner With great appreciation, respect and affection, we proudly dedicate the '62 edition of THE HAWK to you, our beloved advisors, because of your unfaltering faith in us, your encouragement in moments of doubt, your many sacrifices, your boundless love and because of your ceaseless prayers. 3 ur Principal Speaks 113 South 5th Street Smithfield, North Carolina February 1, 1962 Members of the Class of '62 Johnston County Training School Smithfield, North Carolina Greetings: It is a source of genuine pleasure for me to congratulate you on the eve of your graduation from high school and to wish for each of you every possible success. Nothing gives me more consolation as your Principal than the signing of your diplomas, indicating the approval of the Superintendent, the Board of Education, and the members of the faculty in your achievements to date. We are hopeful that as many of you as possible will continue your formal training above high school. If you cannot go to college, we trust that you will be successful in finding employment from which you will be able to make an honorable living. However, you should explore all of the possibilities for scholarship before giving up your plans for further training. Just re member that if you really want to go to college now and have the ability to pursue a college education, a way can be found. Your personal determination is the most important factor. Have great faith and you will accomplish great things. One who possesses little faith usually accomplishes little things. Sincerely, Wm W. R. Collins Principal 4 FACULTY L,-r - F.. This group of young astronauts had heard so much about what it was like to travel through space that they decided 1959 would be a very good time to explore the universe. Approximately one hundred ten of us packed our bags and crowded into the space ship for our first trip into outer space. First, we stopped by Mars where we found a town called Freshmanite. Here we de- cided to take a nine months' rest. We had our leaders: Ivan Cox, President, Allen Eason, Vice -President, Dorothy Sellars, Secretary, Lynwood Bell, Treasurer, Angenette Cox, Reporter, and Joyce Wil- liams, Assistant Secretary, our guides were: Mrs. Watts, Miss Williams, Miss Bonner, Mr. Greene and Mr. Ennis. We were well represented in all of the various activities that took place on Mars. We enjoyed our trip to Mars and some of us liked it well enough to stay on while the majority of the astronauts con-. tinued on to Saturn, where we found a place called Sophomoreville. In Sophomoreville we lost four of our guides, they were replaced with two new guides, Miss Jones, Mr. Greene, and Mr. Murphy. Here we felt we should follow the planet's motto: Every Child a Chance. New leaders were elected: Peggy Moore served as President, Allen Eason, vice president, Joyce Williams, secretary, and Marvin Sanders, as treasurer. Lois Johnson was crowned Miss J.C.T.S., Jean Smith was crowned Miss N.H.A. and Johnetta Red- dick was crowned Miss Versatility. We realized that time was valuable so we left behind those who were not quite ready to leave and traveled on to Mercury. We 20 Class History landed in a town known as Juniorsburg. We lost another guide who was replaced by Miss Bonner. Our leaders were: Lynwood Bell, President, Edward Blackmon, vice president, Jean Smith, secretary, Joyce Williams, assistant secretary, Marvin Sanders, treasurer, and Peggy Moore, as reporter. During our stay on Mercury, we gave many dances. One was called the Roaring Twenties. To celebrate our start of the trip, Marian Williams was chosen, Miss Hawks Observer. Six of our astronauts were members of the National Honor Society. Then came the night everyone had been waiting for, the night of the Junior- Senior Prom. On April 28th every Junior was very proud to walk over the bridge into the elaborate Oriental Gardens. It was really a night never to be forgotten. We journeyed next to the Moon, where we stumbled on the great city of Senior Superiority. By this time we were all ready for busi- ness! Immediately we elected our leaders: Robert Benton, president, Marvin Sanders, vice president, Jean Smith, Corresponding secretary, Lois Avery, Recording secretary, and Joyce Williams, as treasurer. After electing our leaders we drew up plans for our senior year and carried them out accordingly. During our successful trip through space we owe our gratitude and thanks to our most wonderful faculty members and our devoted par- ents. With this combined interest, we have built the foundation for our future. Astronautic Historian--Peggy Moore 21 further to see Robert. Robert had just started his business but he was doing as well as could be expected for a beginner. Robert told me that I could find Edward Blackmon at the Royster Foundation for legal monopolies as the head accountant in Las Vegas. Boarding the plane for Las Vegas and finding my seat was no trouble at all. But who do you suppose I sat beside? None other than actor, David Dew. David and Italked all the way to Las Vegas and he gave me two complimentary tickets to his Broadway show that was premiering on the l2th of June. I finally arrived at my destination and went quickly to the Royster Foundation. When I entered, I was shocked, for the re- ceptionist was Louella Lewis. Louella led me to the next door and there I saw Ruby Barbour, Joyce George, Julia Watson, Elizabeth Hooks, Lucy McCullers and Lucy Sanders as typists. Louella then directed me to Edward's office. Edward was indeed surprised to see me for it had been too long since we had seen each other. Edward was very helpful to me for then he told me that Carl Watson was a well established businessman with a well-known insurance firm on Kilborne Street. Leaving Edward and the others I continued looking for my classmates. Entering the large building on Kilborne Street, I began to look for Carl's office. It wasn't very hard to find. As I entered the room I was shocked because the secretary behind the desk was Jean Smith. Jean and I talked until Evelyn Sanders entered to get some materials Talking to Jean and Evelyn was quite interesting because they told me that Minnie Monk, Peggy Moore, and Alice Watson were working at Charles' Restaurant and Motel as dietitians. So, leaving Evelyn and Jean, I walked down to the exclusive restaurant-motel. The girls were busy in the kitchen and I did not prolong my visit. Walking down James Street in Las Vagas, I passed an interesting beauty salon, SOUTHERN BEAUTY SALON. Realizing that the heat had caused my curls to droop, I decided to enter. Upon entering, I was amazed because before my very eyes stood Bettie Williams, Rox.ie Barbour and Geneva Holder. Geneva gave me a lovely style and I told her who I had seen on my journey and that now I was ready to return to New York. Boarding the plane from California, I found out that Clyde Lucas and Lawrence Winston were in charge. Imagine my life in Clyde and Lavvrence's hands! ! ! After taking my seat, I noticed that there were at least twenty men around me. Being as inquisitive as I am, I asked a young man what was going on and to my reply, he told me that the U.S. Sociology Association was having its annual meeting in New York. Reclining in my seat, I watched the men enter and to my sur- 23 Last Will and Testament We the class of 1962 of Johnston County Training School, town of Smithfield, county of Johnston, state of North Carolina, in healthy bodies, do make this our last will and testament. To our parents your patience you have shown For you have never left us alone Your sacrifices are far from few But there is no way that we can thank you. To the principal and teachers too We will always remember you You, who have taught us in every way All the things we know today. To the underclassmen loving and true Hopes of success we leave with you And may you someday reach this goal That the seniors of '62 are seeking to hold. Each of us is on our way Hoping to reach success someday Our goal we have set so high We're determined to reach it by and by. Margaret Holden Walter Williams Class Song Tune: God of our Fathers I Dear training school, oh how we hate to go, But with our trust and faith in thee we must. Dear training school, your teachings we will hold And our memories will never grow old. II There is a space way in our hearts for you, Those who have been loving, kind and true. Those who have helped us each and every day In starting us on our successful way. III Even though we have to leave you now We shall return someday, somehow, And so we leave with tears in our eyes For we regret to say goodbye.
