We have two educations, one from the teachers, the other we give ourselves. Education is not the mere possession of knowl- edge, but the ability to reflect upon it and grow in wisdom. Whoever would face the light of wisdom must turn his back on the crowd and its shadows. We are beginning to form our own judgments and to judge is to weighg to consider - to questiong to seek evidence - to doubt. As the school year passes, we pause to catch a final glimpse of everything we have done, Our classmates, our friends, our teachers have all played a part in this, our senior year, We have attempted to preserve the memories through word and picture. We the seniors of J.C.'I'.S. made itg we will live it. Here it is---the 1959 HAWK, Ethel L. Bryant, Editor WE GR TEF LLY DEDIC TE 3522: ZZ:-:gg 5?'::: ' 5131 1:-E11 3155. -13-.1 gf. .1- . We dedicate our expression of gratitude to one of our beloved teachers who retired from service at the Johnston County Training School in 1953. Miss Bennie A. Grice was born in Johnston County, North Carolina. She received her public school education in Johnston County. Shie is a graduate of Fayetteville State Teachers College and has done extensive study during summer sessions. Her interest is shown in youth not only in the classroom but on the street, on the play grounds, in Sunday School, Church and wherever a word of encouragement is needed. To one whom we hold in high esteem, To one whom we sincerely respect, To one whom we have always found ready to help us, and guide us in our problems, We proudly dedicate this edition of the Hawk to. . .Miss Bennie A. Seniors, as you complete this second phase ofyour scholastic work and become a High School Graduate, you will be faced with another important decision, and whatever course you take, must be determined by a consideration of sev- eral factors, Whether you go on to further study, go to work, or do nothing, will depend on you. The decision will be yours to make, It is naturalfor your parents, sponsors, and friends to hope that you may find it convenient to continue in schoolg but their fondest hopes will follow you in whatever you accept for yourself, so long as it is honorable. If you have the will and determination, even though you may not have much money, a way will be opened for you. Therefore, don't give up until you have tried every source, and even then, be ,willing to try again, if at first you are not successful. I congratulate you on your accomplishments to date, and strongly urge that you seek Divine Counsel and Guidance in your future efforts. Sincerely, Principal Q i MR. W. R. COLLINS E . We soon overcame our fear of the upperclassmen and the hazing that was received from them disappeared. Our advisors were Miss Blair, Mr. T. I. Dublin, Mr. Q. K. Wall, and Mr. R. Ennis. We followed the leadership of Glenda Clarke, President, and Ruth Vinson, Secretary. Our class was well represented in most of the activities, band, basketball, student coun- cil, and honor society. This year was our most enjoyable. We shall always cherish this year because of the glorious event that gave us more poise and confidence The Freshman Bal1. The year flew by in a mass of happiness and activity, we said. Goodbye to our' freshman year. In the year of 1956. we were no longer, First Class Freshmen, we had entered into that wonderful year in which we were supposed to walk the path of Sophomore's, and it was a wonder- ful feeling indeed. We lost one of our advisors, Mr. Ennis, and gained a new one, Mrs. A. M. Forte, who along with Miss Blair, Mr. Wall, and Mr. Dublin helped to make our Sophomore year a success- ful one, Our President, Glenda Clarke, Vice President, James Eldridge, Secretary, Mildred Watson and again our class was represented in many activities carried on by the faculty and members of the student body. Months rolled by very rapidly and we were becoming more and accustomed to the ways and habits of a High School student. When the moment came, and we realized that it was time for our vacation, and also time to start preparing ourselves for the exciting year coming up, our Junior Year, We can truly say, we will never forget the happy moments of our sophomore year, and the many events that took place, but as we all know, time waits for no-one. We entered our Junior year with eager anticipation. Our class officers were Willard Smith, President, Glenda Clarke, Vice Presidentg Margie Cole, Secretaryg Lois Diggs, Assistant Secretary. With the aid of our sponsors, Miss L. M. Blair, Mr. Q. K. Wall, and Mr. R. Ennis we were determined to make the best year ever, Members of the class participated wholeheartedly in all clubs and activities. Glenda Clarke reigned as Miss J.C.T.S. Christmas Queen. Soon the time came that we were all waiting for. The Prom, April 25. 1958. The gymnasium was beautifully decorated with our theme April Showers, in mind. Music was rendered by The Swinging Shepherds. After the school term was out everyone was rejoicing and waiting for their Senior year to come. Everyone worked hard the summer of '58 thinking about the different things that they wanted and would like to have in order to help their parents for their senior year. September finally came and everyone was happy to be dignified seniors. Everyone returned meeting, and greeting their old friends. We had many class meetings to weigh such things as class rings, mottos, our class officers, and most of all invitations. We enrolled about 89 seniors. CLASS HI TORY The class officers were: David Avery, President, William Bradley, Financial Secretary, Edward Watson, Vice President, and Charlotte Saunders, Recording Secretary. Mrs. Barfield, a new member of our faculty, Mr. Wall, and Mr. Dublin were our advisors. As you know everything did not go as we wished for it. We had bad and good ties. The year of 1958 was the first time we had at our school a Parent-Teacher Student Conference which was held October 20, 1958. Theme: The relationship between the parent, teacher, and student in the total educational development of the child. There were many parents participating and attending the program, Our first Holiday was Thanksgiving which we had about five out of school. Everyone returned to school laughing and talking about the different enjoyments they had over the holi- day period. And now the student finally got back into working condition before the Christmas vacation came. Another exciting day was the pictures which were taken for the yearbook. Many pro- grams, and plays were planned for the year. All of these were a success. The rings were scheduled to be here on January 15, 1959. A great surprise was held for us because of the snow which was a long vacation before Christmas, We had approximately three weeks out for Christmas unexpectedly. Everyone was glad to get out for the needed rest. School reopened the 29th of December, The New Year was planned with Senior Parent Banquet, May 265 Class Night, May 28thg Baccalaureate Exercises, May 31g and dear ole Commencement Day, June 4, 1959. By the expressions on the seniors of the Johnston County Training School, we hate to leave our many, many friends, our beloved principal, faculty, and classmates, No matter where we go or where we be, we will never forget our beloved school.
