JOHNSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SMITHFIELD, NORTH CAROLINA Cover design by Johnny Byrd. 2 RESEARCH . . . In 1967 the Smithfield Chamber of Commerce appointed a steering committee, headed by the late M. Brack Wilson, Sr., a prominent Smithfield businessman and civic leader, to study the need for a post-secondary educational institution for Johnston County and surrounding areas. This study led to the establishment in 1969 of Johnston County Technical Institute, the fifty-first institution in the North Carolina Community College System. M. Brack Wilson, Sr. was elected Chairman of the Institute ' s newly -appointed Board of Trustees, and William R. Britt, Vice-Chairman. Dr. John L. Tart was chosen by the board to serve as the Institute ' s President. In September, 1969, under his leadership, Johnston County Technical Institute enrolled its first students in 29 evening courses at the former Forest Hill School, located on Highway 301 South near the town of Four Oaks. 8 GROWTH . . . Adult high school classes were offered and a new industry training program was initiated at Chicopee Manufacturing Company in Benson in December, 1969. General Office Technology was the Institute’s first full-time, on-campus program. The Institute climaxed its first year of operation by holding Adult High School Graduation exercises on August 26, 1970 with b-8 graduates. Johnston County Technical Institute was changed by the Board of Trustees to Johnston Technical Institute in January, 1971. That August, the Institute held its first graduation of 31 curriculum students. Dramatic growth in student population increased the need for a permanent campus. On December b, 1971 a one-hundred acre tract of land, located near the intersection of Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 70 was purchased. The first major building provided 51,000 square feet and was named the Wilson Building for the Institute’s first Chairman of the Board of Trustees. U « CHANGES On September 13, 1976, students began classes on the new campus. Completion of three additional buildings added 30,000 square feet of classroom and laboratory space. Johnston Technical Institute was fully accredited by the North Carolina State Board of Education on July 7 , 1977 and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools on December 13, 1977. On June 2, 1980 the Johnston County Board of Commissioners acted to change the official name of Johnston Technical Institute to Johnston Technical College. During 1981, enrollment exceeded 2,500 full-time students. Buildings and facilities were being utilized to a practical maximum, and plans were developed to construct 17,500 square feet of space consisting of laboratories, classrooms and faculty office space to house Diesel Mechanics, a Machine Shop and Truck Driver Training. Construction of this facility was completed in early 1983. The North Carolina Truck Driver Training School was relocated to the Smithfield campus. 5 EXPANSION . . . A new addition to the Wilson Building was completed in the Spring of 1985. This addition provided facilities for a computer center, several additional classrooms, and a much-yieeded enlarged student lounge. In August, 1987, the Trustees and Johnston County Board of Commissioners acted to change the official name of Joh nston Technical College to Johnston Community College. Construction was begun in October, 1987 on a Learning Resources Center building ( adjacent to the Wilson Building) which will feature a new library and 1,000-seat auditorium for College and community use. 7 SIGNS OF SPARE TIME While at school, students atJ.C.C. have a variety of things to occupy their spare time. These events in- clude taking lunch or supper breaks, catching up on the latest gossip, or munching down on food pro- vided by clubs, the cafeteria services, or the snack machines. One of the exciting events for students who partic- ipate in the S.G.A. is the annual S.G.A. convention, which is held in a variety of cities throughout N.C. These conventions are not only a time of learning, but can also be a time for students from all over the state to get acquainted with one another. At Christmas time, the campus is exquisitely dec- orated with a variety of ornaments by the students of the Retail Floriculture program. The campus is really beautiful at this time of the year and is en- joyed by the students , faculty , and staff. 10 A SIGN OF CHRISTMAS What is red, green, gold, silver, and full ofpoinsettias? It is JCC at Christmas time! Every year the campus under- goes a facelift arouyid December. Santa (Mr. Bennett Barnes) sends his little elfs (students) down here to the JCC student lounge to spread the Christmas cheer. Beautifully decorated trees are put up, harmonious tunes are played by a band, and even the old “ Scrooge ” comes out to see all of the exciting events. THE JOHNSTON COMMUNITY College “Community Band ” rocks around the Christmas tree with their director John “Doc” Windley. EBENEZER SCROOGE (Tony Medlin) visits JCC after being scared by a ghost. BACK TO THE BOOKS There is nothing more reliev- ing than taking that last exam to end your quarter. However , a few weeks later it is back to the books. But, before any books are opened or any lec tures are made you go through registration. Sometimes registration can be frustrating , especially if you are in a hurry, but there is also some good in it. During registration students get a chance to see friends they have not seen over break. It is also a time to meet new people and to get better acquainted with the various clubs on cam- pus. KIM WOODARD flashes her “business” smile as Phi Kappa Pi welcomes new students. CLAYTON PARKER lets out a sigh of relief . . . the end is fi- nally in his sight. SOME STUDENTS find regis- tration amusing. Alan Peterson has fun getting his picture taken. 12 IT’S SHOWTIME!!! Ralph Mitchell, center, came to JCC last Fall and inspired us all with his Cosby-style wit about life and living. The students gave Ralph a rousing cheer as he told them that they were all special people. Last Winter, JCC’s visiting artist Tony Medlin bawdy bard! Tony got rave reviews for his per- gave his special one-man interpretation of the formance and his tights! 13 Cookouts are always a big event for the JCC students, and every quarter the Student Gov- ernment Association puts on one of these hamburger extra- vaganzas. The members of the SGA get out the bar-b-que grills and fire up the coals to satisfy about 700 hungry students along with faculty and staff members. During the fall and spring the cookouts are held outside either on the patio or on the grass. These outside gatherings bring the students, faculty and staff members together! U c- . 15 WORK PLAY AT N4CSGA CONFERENCE! Every quarter, the Student Government Associ- ation of JCC attends leadership conferences in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. This past year, our SGA was selected as one of the host schools for the Spring Conference in Raleigh. At the conventions, our delegates attend work- shops, committee meetings, and official business sessions. In the evening, however, the business be- comes pleasure as the delegates are provided with music and an opportunity to mingle and meet. In photos (clockwise), Tracey Dixon and Mary Norman head to a workshop on AIDS; Mrs. M el- nick rounds up the crowd before early morning registration; Tracey, Steven Baker and Timmy take notes while participating in a legislative workshop; Michael Stanley, Jeff Snead and Michael Best take time out to shop; and, this is what Jeff and Michael look like before their morn- ing makeovers! PKP CAUGHT RAISIN’ SAND! Phi Kappa Pi’s fall dance featured two scoops of dancin’ California raisin. Unfortunately, the dancin’ raisin photos bombed. Anyway, as you can see in photo number one, Mr. Stowers, Jean Green (former PKP president) and Mr. Jackson were in a fun raisin’ mood. In photo number two, DeeDee pours a cup of cheer while Glenn takes a snooze. In the bottom photo, Bill, Tony and Karen do the ‘ stand around’ dance. 17 SIGNS OF SPRING (FLING)! Each Spring JCC ' s Student Government Association hosts a gala cookout and fun day which has come to be known as the SPRING FLING! This year there was food galore , lots of pretty girls and loud music by those wild DJ. ' s, “Soii7id Approach. Various campus clubs earned extra funds by setting up booths and games , and the Accounting Club came in first in fundraising with their water balloon toss. Classes were cancelled and the mood was manic! Photo captions (clockwise from top left): Mrs. Tripp keeps her trim figure by holding her lunch to one weiner. “We usually use the X-Ray machine to cook our hotdogs, said Mrs. Tripp. In photo two, Mrs. Batten tries to prove that “God helps those who help themselves. In Photo three , Tony Radford just loves his chili! And finally , Mrs. Parnell says “ Haven ' t you ever seen a fly do the backstroke in the mustard? 18 SIGNS OF FUN! A smile can be the sign of a good time. If this is true, almost everyone was hav- ing a good time at SPRING FLING! Photo captions ( clockwise from top left): Tracy Keen laughs while watching Mrs. Melnick sleepwalk during the festivities. In Photo two, Crystal Durham tries to decide if it will be mustard, mayo, ketchup, relish, or ALL FOUR! Lastly, but not leastly, Steve Allen shows the proper way to prepare a ‘tube steak!’ In honor of the N.C. Community College System’s °25th anniversary , J CC’ s S.G.A. released 1,000 baloons! Shown doing the honors are Vicky ' Williford and Mary Nor- man. 19 20 TIME OUT! People everywhere like to take time out for a few snapshots! Students in Mr. Stevenson’s Environmental Biology lab take shelter in a 400-year-old Cypress tree during afield trip to the seashore! Amy and Shannon like to sit around and laugh between classes. Tina Franklin shows one of her classmates who got too much radiation! i . h; it i t Jt pi ' f M r %. i -1 • ; J fA M • - ' M H wm if . x 4b M ; i .
