Inside is a dream . . . . . . the light does not reveal it. It reveals itself in things it touches along the way. 6 T(? Jane and Rodney take time out for a smile . . . Mr. Roberts and Brian like to read Bazooka Joe comics before class . . . David lets Brian have it ( the water gun) ... an afternoon by the lake . . . the JTC beach bums. 7 IT WAS A REAL TRTPMf JL JLwJL M. • • • HEALTH FAIR SHOWS WE CARE! Each year JTC’s nursing students hold a ’health fair’ in the student lounge where faculty, staff, students and members of the public may have a variety of tests ( such as blood pressure, weight, blood sugar, etc.) done for free. It may hurt a little, but you just have to ’stick’ to it. Thanks to all our nursing students and instructors for this good service! 10 SIGNS ON THE HORIZON! Phi Kappa Pi used the whole ' sheet’ of paper to welcome new business students last fall! The whole 1986 graduating class of nurses passed the state registry examination for a 100% passing rate — GREAT ! Just to say we’re good too! the radiologic technology class of ' 87 all passed the national registry examina- tion and left high expectations for first year rad-tech students clustered around the 100% cotton sign. Time to SIGN OFF! 11 CHRISTMAS ON THE HORIZON Every year students in our retail flori- culture and food service specialist programs host a beautiful Christmas ex- travaganza! This year they used JTC’s student lounge for the first time and truly transformed it into a holiday hoorah! Nearly a thousand people en- joyed the sights and smells and taste treats. Thanks to Bennett Barnes , Susan Hayes and their hardworking students for an early Christmas present! 12 Christmas Sounds On The Horizon 13 FIELD DAY — NO WORK — ALL PLAY! May 27 dawned cloudy and gray but the weather did not haynper our spirits as festivities got under way for the annual Field Day and Cookout spon- sored by the Student Government Asso- ciation! A featured attraction was the Dunkin ' Booth which was manned by some hearty souls indeed as ivater tem- perature at 10:00 a.m. was about 32 degrees. Students paid 50 ceyits to throw balls at their ‘ favorite ” instructors. The action was wet ayid wild as funds were raised for Phi Kappa Pi to help send representatives to California to compete in national Phi Beta Lambda competi- tion. All the “ good sports” turned out to play a little volleyball, basketball and tug-o- war. There were also plenty of spectators who preferred to watch and wait for the burgers to grill! U FIELD DAY AND COOKOUT WAS A “BALL” The basketball games brought out some amazing athletes! In the photo at left , Mallie “ Luke Skywalker Umphrey executes a rim-rattling dunk of a soft- ball. They said it couldn’t be done. Maybe they were right. One of the best basketball contests during Field Day was between the Boston “Smelltics” and the L.A. “Fakers. Actual- ly, it looks a lot like the old shirts and skins game. Our new scoreboard broke during the game so no one knows what the final score actually was. That concrete is rough on your Reeboks! 15 FIELD DAY WAS FUN SUN DAY! Sounds of LISA LISA and U2 . . . loud sounds . . . those lovely Cosmo girls . . . short shorts . . . Hawaiian Tropic tans . . . pale faces . . . Jams . . . black Reeboks . . . Charlene, Wendy and Jane hugging . . . Sherrill asking Fuz and Mark “Hey, where’s the keg?” . . . Charlene and Jane asking Terry “ Why are your arms so small?” 16 OUTRAGEOUS WAS CONTAGIOUS! . . . the Jump brothers. Skip and Flip, showing Olympic form . . . Tammy thinking “I make these other people look so ordinary!” . . . Sherrill asking Fuz and Mark “Hey, you ' re kidding. Now where’s the keg?” . . . William R. Britt, Albert A. Proceeds were going to- wards fares to the National Phi Beta Lambda Competition in California. The cars got a lot of spraying but so did the washers! “I thought you were supposed to wash the engine too!” ‘‘Jim Jam” Jackson practices to be Karate Kid III! 58 FORKIN’ AT THE CAR WASH BLUES! Jungle Jim uses the elbow grease, oris it just grease on the elbow? Can you guess which photo is titled “ Jim Jams?” Well, two Jims don’t make a right. 59 STUDENTS Alma . Last Fall an important part of faculty orientation activities was a picnic! “ It takes a lot of energy to teach these young folks,” said Jim (Jungle Jim) Sumerel, as he showed novices how to make the most of available plate space. The others caught on quickly. 78 ALL REGISTRATION LINE UP! A Ah, registration — or should we say frustration ? Fall quarter registration brought long lines and overdue book fines. We learned the meaning of ’hurry up and wait,’ but actually, it gave us a chance to bat the breeze with our buddies. As the computer warmed up, the line moved up and we paid up. ‘Spi- der’ Webb made the PRIME prime time. Modem technology — ain’t it wonderful? Frank Creech, head ofJTC’s commercial art department, was finally tracked down by the long arm of the laiv (Officer Walter Martin). Creech, alias Frank Monet and Michael- angelo, was placed behind bars (not the kind he’s used to) for the Johnston County Unit of the American Cancer Society. He was taken aivay in a squad car yelling “ I’ve been framed.” Ironic words for an art teacher. Creech was charged with two counts of impersonating an artist. “ He’s an artist all right,” said Officer Martin, “a con artist! Creech finally managed to raise his bail money by pawning his tracing paper. Look at Mr. Jackson catching a ride to floriculture . . . Why does Claude Dunn wear shades all of the time ? Is his future that bright? . . . “No,” says Tammy, “he wears them ’cause I do. 105 106 The Retrospect 1987 yearbook editor was not an easy position. It involved long hours of work, but thanks to Mallie Umphrey and Mr. Bill Cheeley those hours were made easier. Mallie, thanks for all of your help with the photos and all of your knowledge. It will really be hard to find someone as nice and easy to work with next year. Mr. Cheeley, thanks for all of your opinions that I didn ' t have to agree with (but always did), the food, and all of your jokes. And, thanks to all of those who had good intentions, but no time. Thank-you, Mary Norman 1987 yearbook editor 107 As we leave and progress toward our dreams we should remember to always keep our eyes on our new horizons.
