PRESIDENT DR. JOHN L TART Shortly after Johnston County Technical Institute was established in 3 3 as the fifty-first institution in the North Carolina Community College system , Dr. John Usher Tart was chosen by the Board of Trustees to serve as president. Under his dynamic leadership , Johnston County Technical Institute, first located at the former Forest Hill School near the town of Four Oaks, has evolved into Johnston Technical College, a fully-accredited , modern adult postsecondary institution situated on a beautifully landscaped one-hundred acre campus. Constantly seeking better facibttes to serve the citizens of Johnston County, Dr. Tart has been instrumental in obtaining funding for a number of recent major additions to the campus. In 13X1 , plans were developed to construct 17,500 sguare feet of space consisting of laboratories , classrooms and faculty office space to house Diesel Mechanics , a Machine Shop and Trucker Driver Training. This facibty was completed in early tJXi, and the North Carolina Truck Driver Training School tthen located in Raleigh) was moved to our campus. Space was also provided for the development of a comprehensive fire fghting and rescue sguad educational facility . A new addition to the Wilson Building was completed in the Spring of 13X5. This addition provided facilities for a computer center, several additional classrooms , and a much-needed enlarged student lounge. Dr. Tart continues to look to the future and recently anchored a county-wide fundraising campaign which successfully garnered ft 1.5 million for the construction of a Learning Resources Center building complex which will feature a new library and a 1 ,000- seat auditorium for College and community use. Therefore, for his strong leadership , his belief in the open door philosophy and his desire to ensure that Johnston Technical College continues to be a resource for all of our citizens, RETROSPECT ' X6 salutes our president. Dr. John L. Tart. 16
