DEDICATION TO ALL WHO GAVE THE JOHNSTON AUDITORIUM A DREAM IS BECOMING A REALITY The dream was born in Jane of 19X4 whence North Carolina General Assembly approved a state appropriations bill that included ft .2 million for the construction of a new Learning Resources Center on the campus of Johnston Technical College. The new structure would house a much-needed library, learning laboratory , audio-visual center , and a small teaching auditorium ( 100 seats or less). But JTC’s president Dr. John Tart had a larger dream. It was his idea that the teaching auditorium college could become a community auditorium , f additional money could be raised to supplement the state appropriation. ImS For many years Johnstonians had needed a modern, centrally located meeting place to accommodate large groups of people. The College Trustees asked the community at large if enough money could be raised to turn the proposed lecture hall into a WOO- seat auditorium . Such a facility was needed for public events, plays, musical concerts, and a variety of other community activities. An auditorium would also enhance the College ' s educational program. A group of Johnston County civic leaders emerged to explore the idea of raising additional money through a county-wide fund drive. An auditorium facility would cost over fl .5 million. Would Johnsto- nians bond together and support such an ambitious project? The answer from leaders throughout the County was a resounding yes, we can!”
