DEDICATION TO ALL WHO GAVE THE JOHNSTON AUDITORIUM A DREAM IS BECOMING A REALITY The dream was born in Jane of 19X4 whence North Carolina General Assembly approved a state appropriations bill that included ft .2 million for the construction of a new Learning Resources Center on the campus of Johnston Technical College. The new structure would house a much-needed library, learning laboratory , audio-visual center , and a small teaching auditorium ( 100 seats or less). But JTC’s president Dr. John Tart had a larger dream. It was his idea that the teaching auditorium college could become a community auditorium , f additional money could be raised to supplement the state appropriation. ImS For many years Johnstonians had needed a modern, centrally located meeting place to accommodate large groups of people. The College Trustees asked the community at large if enough money could be raised to turn the proposed lecture hall into a WOO- seat auditorium . Such a facility was needed for public events, plays, musical concerts, and a variety of other community activities. An auditorium would also enhance the College ' s educational program. A group of Johnston County civic leaders emerged to explore the idea of raising additional money through a county-wide fund drive. An auditorium facility would cost over fl .5 million. Would Johnsto- nians bond together and support such an ambitious project? The answer from leaders throughout the County was a resounding yes, we can!” (By early spring of 19X5, ike fund raising organization was in place and ike campaign began in earnest. In January, 19 6, tkere was good news. Tke fl .5 million goalkad been reacked! And JTC students raised over fS ,900 of tke goal! Tke people of Joknston County kave reason for genuine pride in tkis tremendous accompliskment . . . tkose wko pledged large amounts and tkose wko gave wkattkey could ... all were vital to tke success of tke drive. Never before in tke kistory of tke County kad a fund raising drive of tkis magnitude been attempted . But tke challenge was met. THE DREAM IS BECOMING A REALITY! Architect’s plans kave been drawn, tke ground has been prepared, and construction of tke facility wilt begin in tke near future. Therefore , it is appropriate and fitting that RETROSPECT 86 is respectfully dedicated to every person wko contributed to tkis worthwhile effort. YOU ' RE THE GREATEST! n BOARD OF TRUSTEES William R. Benson of Angier retired from the Johnston Technical College Board of Trustees last gear after a long and distinguished period of service. For his tireless efforts on behalf of the College, his dedication to providing improved educational opportunities for the citizens in our area, and his friendship, RETROSPECT ME salutes Mr. Benson. 13 PRESIDENT DR. JOHN L TART Shortly after Johnston County Technical Institute was established in 3 3 as the fifty-first institution in the North Carolina Community College system , Dr. John Usher Tart was chosen by the Board of Trustees to serve as president. Under his dynamic leadership , Johnston County Technical Institute, first located at the former Forest Hill School near the town of Four Oaks, has evolved into Johnston Technical College, a fully-accredited , modern adult postsecondary institution situated on a beautifully landscaped one-hundred acre campus. Constantly seeking better facibttes to serve the citizens of Johnston County, Dr. Tart has been instrumental in obtaining funding for a number of recent major additions to the campus. In 13X1 , plans were developed to construct 17,500 sguare feet of space consisting of laboratories , classrooms and faculty office space to house Diesel Mechanics , a Machine Shop and Trucker Driver Training. This facibty was completed in early tJXi, and the North Carolina Truck Driver Training School tthen located in Raleigh) was moved to our campus. Space was also provided for the development of a comprehensive fire fghting and rescue sguad educational facility . A new addition to the Wilson Building was completed in the Spring of 13X5. This addition provided facilities for a computer center, several additional classrooms , and a much-needed enlarged student lounge. Dr. Tart continues to look to the future and recently anchored a county-wide fundraising campaign which successfully garnered ft 1.5 million for the construction of a Learning Resources Center building complex which will feature a new library and a 1 ,000- seat auditorium for College and community use. Therefore, for his strong leadership , his belief in the open door philosophy and his desire to ensure that Johnston Technical College continues to be a resource for all of our citizens, RETROSPECT ' X6 salutes our president. There was a roar of appreciation! JTC faculty, staff and students, in addition to many invited guests, jam-packed the student lounge for the annual Cosmetology Hair Styling Competition entitled A NEW HORIZON.” For those lucky enough to find standing room ( and even better, sitting room) a real treat was in store! Each year the show seems to get better and better, but this year’s show was the BEST ever! Beautiful models, stunning hairstyles, and fabulous clothes made the show a delightful experience. Some top-fbght entertainment by Cosmo students and sumptuous refreshments provided by Foodservice students rounded out the happy event. Decorations were provided by Bennett Barnes ' Retail Floriculture group. Congratulations to all those who participated in or helped with the production. Blood donation is an outstanding example of people helping people and we at JTC are proud to lend a hand ( or arm). Twice yearly Johnston Technical College makes facilities available for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Bloodmobile visits are the primary public service events of the College. A friendly competition is held between the various programs of study to see which can get the most students ( or substitutes) to donate blood. The Electronics Engineering Technology group has taken top honors for the past several Bloodmobile visits.
