The first Miss JTI blazed her way to the crown with flaming batons. The graceful and confident manner in which she twirled fire hypnotized the judges. The other lovely contestants were: first runner- up, Miss Rosemary Price; second runner-up, Lena Hunter; third runner-up and Miss Congeniality, Barbara McEachin. The other four contestants were Debbie Murrell, June Dorman, Jo Ellen Corbett, and Cathy Morgan. 61 Debbie Murrell June Dorman Cathy Morgan Jo Ellen Corbett 6o Basketball 1972-73 Kneeling: Gary Weaver, Glenn Graham, John Westbrook, D.B. Absent when picture was taken Fred Artis, co-captain. The 1972-73 Johnston Tech basketball competed in the toughest Community College basketball conference in the state. This statement is evidenced by the fact that the conference champion, Southeastern Community College, advanced to the finals of the Southern District play-offs in Virginia. Although the Blue Devils were inconsistent, they had many highlights during the season. There were two big wins over last year’s champion team, Roanoke-Chowan, and impressive wins over Wayne Community College, Halifax, and James Sprunt. The most exciting game was a highscoring Blue Devil victory over Piedmont Tech by a score of 106:104. The season was climaxed by a trip to Mt. Airy for the conference Tournament. Although the Blue Devils did not win, they represented JTI well and gained valuable knowledge and experience needed to become championship contenders ne season. 64 “Anybody for the Teaberry Shuffle?” 65 66 Kneeling: Pam Barbour, co-chief; Jo Kimball, chief. Standing: Jean Holder; Rosemary Price; Vandora Cole. (Not pictured; advisors Carol Hamilton, Hannah Williams) Here’s the way to yell! No school or its athletic program could compete without those “special” people whose jobs are to spread cheer around and to boost the morale of everyone — not only the s tudents, but the faculty and even the staff. Of course, this enjoyable “task” went to these five girls! Working together was one of their main objectives, and in achieving this goal during ballgames, pep rallies, or just ordinary get- togethers, they discovered the true meaning of friendship. 67 “Hey there, Big Boy!” “I’m just a little monkey in disguise.” “Here’s one way to score!” “Anyone for volleyball?” 68 Student Life 69 70 71 I do my thing, and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations And you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am I, And if by chance we find each other, it’s beautiful. Fredick S.
