But lo, they do not hear! Carelessly we let the days slip by, ' Leaving stones unturned and duties uncompleted, Racing blindly into darkness unpreparedifor the price We are to pay. Caring not for others as we ourselves Are comfortable and have all good things around. Safe from the wind and storm and rain. Too late we know that we have failed, Blackness grabs us and we are once again turned Back to the earthly dust from whence we came. HORRORS OF WAR Lovona Kilgore My shoulders ache beneath my pack, My trigger finger is cold and numb, The rain falls hard upon my back, My senses reel and are almost dumb. I often think of men who sit And watch the markets soar to the sky, And then I think of how I've done my bit And gaze at the horror of war and wonder why-- If those men who make these wars, Were compelled, like me, to tramp and march, Then we could thank our lucky stars For there would be no wars. To add to Vic's and Howard s sorrows, they found that Mr. Percon lAnno's fathery was planning tocendow a science building for the college but now would not because of hhO' indignity he had suffered. 0n-top of all this, Howard's aunt appears on the scene, finds that Howard will not graduate, and proceeds to inveigle ppofessor Bean into letting him passe ' By much planning, Anne, Vic and Vivian trick Mr. Percen into en- dowing the college, All ends well, the seniors graduate, Professor Bean and Aunt Maude marry, Anne's parents consent to her marrying Howard and Ed's attempts to perfect a substitute for dynamite end the play with a bang.' Mr. Tillman directed the play. -apr l5'f'w fp ,,mQj A1 E,, --my ' ,.4..,,,,,,,' A t, J A F: Y , try, Ti ' .- .A fl., M hi , , Q-flirt J 1' wi 1' Eff xfbii 1 . . v . cn x. . Davison Assistant Coach Virgil Fletcher Although the Indians began the 1959 season with eleven letter-men phe outlook for a successful season was not very bright, since only ahree had played regularly in '58. The loss of Adams, regular tackle the Gamklllg Co-captain and quarterback, added further te CDC questions rble gridiron situation. However, before the end of the season this group cf misfits, scrubs, and players who had never before boon in a 'eotbzll uniform were to be known as one of the best teams ever to ren nresent J, C. T. H. S. under the lights. This year marked the end of Big Eleven Conference activities for I. C. and we played in a new Central Egyptian Conference, along with Zeigler , Christopher, Sparta, Carterville, and Elkville. The Indians took the championship of the conference handily with five victories and no defeats. . - Three players: Captain Lawrence Calufetti,ga1lbaek, George Jent, end, and George Kee, center, received honorable mention 'from the all state board on their team selections. The season opened with the unknown Indians taking on a highly touted team from Elkville on September 15. It took the warriors some time to get going out in the last half they hit their stride and came down the stretch with a 55-O triumph.. ' A week 1ater,.September 22, with Feli, Williams and Jent on the injured list we trave ed to Herrin to play the fighting Tigers.. In the Hirst half Herrin took a 6-O lead.. The added another touchdown in the second half to lead 12-O., Late in the third period Hubbard, J. C. end, intercepted a Herrin pass and galloped to the five yard line, from whwne Bruenara went over. In the fourth period the Indians really came Lack fighting. A steady marqp down the field ended with Brugnara again going over tackle to tie the score at twelve a11.' Forty-five seconds jr playing time remained when Rodden pitched a pass to Vieceli from .a fake kick after-touchdown formation to put the Indians ahead 13-12, -nding the most thrilling game played by the Redmen all season. Cn September 28 the Warriors pitched their tents on the hunting frounes of the Sparta Blue Streaks. ,Playing in a slight drizzle they ran the ball all ever the field to win 1862. The work of the J. C. line which refused to bedge an inch was the highlight of this battle. Zeigler was the next to fall prey to the mighty men of J. A N u-4 1:1-ax :mf 1- - ff A ' '- naqu ,F ll FOOTBALL The Indians played their best game of the season on October 28 when they engaged the Eldorado Eagles in their Saline county strong- hold. Eldorado had a big line and a fast backfield which included Blade, a 190-pounder,ln line for all-state honors, and had beaten some of the best teams in this section, among them, Benton, champs of the Big Seven Conference, by a score of 15-6. The Indians were in top form. Blake was completely stopped and the big Eagle line was out rushed by the smaller but more aggressive J. C. linomen. The score rted 19-O in our favor at the final gun. November fourth was a sad night for us because it not only ended our schedule but also ended in defeat by Salem. The Northern boygl first two touchdowns camo as the result of fumbles deep in Indians territory. The Indians only score came on a blocked kick on Salomw ten yard line. This battle was a natural letdown after the great Eldorado victory, and but for a few bad breaks, the score might have been reversed. J. C. gained more yardage than Salem but twice when near the epponont's goal could not put the ball over. Score: Salem 19 J. C. 7. ' The Salem game ended the high school football careers of ten players: Jent, H. Daugherty, R. P. Savnat, R. D. Savant, Fell , Koo , Davis, Webb, Calufetti, and Vieceli will be lost next year. At a banquet given in honor of the team at Bryd's Hotel, Leo Brugnira, halfbaek, and Eugene Williams, guard, both juniors,wcYe elected co-captains of next yelr's team. Harold Daugherty, senior-Handicapped by the lack of weight.nMarkn was, nevertheless a brilliant defensive and offensive loft end. This was his fourth year of football and his experience made him a good man to have around. Mario Della Betta, junior-A tough, durable loft tackle. Made the jump from the third team to the first eleven in one year. nMottio U should gain plenty of weight and be ready for a great season next yean Eugene Williams, junior-Co-captain for next year. One of the hardest hitters in a hard line. Fast in running interference at left guard and herd charger on defense. Should be at his best next year. George Kee, senior-In his first year as a regular uBaben was an outstanding defensive center. His aggressive play at the pivot post was appreciated by a large number of coaches who saw him ple . His work on J. C. S with be a and Ben- in George Jent was placed on the all-state team by a state wide vote of coachos,'wr1ters and principals. Captain Hildreth Higginbotham re- ceived honorable mention. Captain Hildreth Higginbothan Senior-UHickU was a great loader as wall as a fine ball player. His defensive work and ball handling nado aim known throughout this section. Last year he made the Big Eleven Ccnferenco second team. Probably the greatest tribute to his defensive ability and team leadership was his befng picked on the Benton UTough - est-In-The-State,u Regional Tournament all-star team even though some the states highest scorers were there and he made only 4 points .luring the tournament. George Jent Senior-Little need be said about uRedU. Everyone who sew him play will remember the flaming red head of '57 '58 '59 and '40 Jith the possible exception of Art Yates and Ralph Davison , Red is the greatest all-around athlete ever produced at J. C. T. H. S. His Basket- ball record leaves nothing to be desired. His scoring and rebounding for four years brought places on two all-conference teams, the Regional tournament All-star team, and last, but not least the All-State team. Billy Harrison, Senior-Though not as spectacular as gong of the other boys usandyn was probably the nest consistent player on the team as well as one of the nest versatile. He was a good shot and a fine defensive player. During the absence of Captain Higginbothan it was he who took charge and directed the team in fine style. In the second tussle with Christopher Bill was the whole show and won the game almost single handed. Eugene Williams, Junior-nSquabby'sn third year on the varsity was probably his best. His fighting ability and spirit never was shown better. He played an aggressive, head on, typo of basketball and finish ad over the 150 mark in scoring. His great eye in the clutches and zgainst strong teams pulled many tight ones out of the fire. He are' looking for Squab to be a grezt player next year because of his eipors icnce and ability. U Arlie Hubbard, Freshman-The freshman class was nhighlyu represented this year by the 6 feet 5 inches nSnutn whose height 'end rebounding work made him a dangerous player. Among them were fifteen experienced men including Co-Captains George Jent and Louis Veieeli. In their first five meets the team won first in three, second in one, and sixth once. A dual meet with Marion opened the campaign. Paced by Jent, who placed first in the 220 yard dash, the 110 high hurdles, and the shot- put, they ran away from the Wildcats, getting 74 points. h The county meet was also won by J.C. and Jent again was outstand- ing along with Vleeeli, Davis, Heddon, Dipietre, Jackson, and the Freshman Relay which set a new record. LJent tied the record for the high hurdles. - The. J.C. cindernen finished second to Benton in the ' blreounty meet held at West Frankfort with a total of 45 points. Ono of the most interesting events was the G.A.A. playday, that was held here on November 27. dOur G.A.A. was hostess to 120 girls who represented five schools of Southern Ill- inois. There were a number of different activities and exercises giv n under the direction of Miss Seymour. A contest was held in which one girl from each of the five schools represented. The girls were judged upon beauty and posutro, Johnston City being represented by Katherine Hendrickson. ' During the club period on March 14, a formal initiation was held for forty new members and each received a membership pin. ' As has been done in the past two years, three girls will be sont to camp this year. They will be the president, vice president and one elected member. The G.A.A. membership awards were given on the twenty-third ef'Mayw Each letter given was on the basis of each girl having passed in three subjects, kept health rules for at least sixteen weeks and having the required number of points in G.A.n. activities. Another outstanding accomplishment of the G.A,A. was its sponsor- ing a noon time recreation program. This program was carried on from the first of February until the end of school. There were a large num- ber of different games available to everyone who cared to play, thermmt popular being: ping-pong, volley ball, croquet, and tennis. ' The gym class was also responsible for the Tumblers, who did aero- batie stunts at the basketball games this year. wg v bf.- rfz - . . .- vb id f .rJf -. .1 fi ' gf: vl ' .. my ,, ' '- .. . 1 -qc .335 'J' , 6. rm? 5qT,fjK . 41,1j, M ' .TT IX -hw 552 si-2.11. . - .502-.-fag' 71 .' , sz gL'al,.2 'Qt ..wU 29- ., .., g..
