Senior Class History i The seventh day of September 1943, was a bright day in the hearts of men, and a dreary day in the hearts of 36 children as we started out to our first day of school. Upon arrival we were greeted by Mrs. Lowell Wickham who soon made us happy and content in our new surroundings. During our twelve years at Johnson-St. Paris School, we were guided and helped by many wonderful teachers to whom we wish to express our gratitude. Also during these years together we have enjoyed parties, picnics, plays, and many other class projects. And now as we look back upon those days we think of the wonderful experiences we had in Johnson-St. Paris School. And now we bid adieu To these old walls so dear, And resign ourselves to the fact That this is our last year. We think of times of sorrow. Of happy times we’ve had But when we sum it all up, It really wasn't bad. Our teachers who inspired And helped us in despair, I know that we did give them Such a time of wear and tear. And now we bid adieu To go on our separate ways, And hope that we may meet again On many future days. History: Daryl Henderson. And Sixth Grade Operetta December 22, 1954 Hansel and Gretel Cast: Hansel...................Kathy Gravitt Gretel.................Zoan Paananen The Old Witch.....................Ruth Scott Peter, the father.................Pete Louden Gertrude, the mother . . . Karen Mahan The Fairy........................Janet Zook The Sandman...........Johnny Amerman The rest of the cast was composed of fourteen angels who kept watch over Hansel and Gretel; also included were fourteen gingerbread children who were underthe terrible spell of the bad witch. Once upon a time, a poor broom - maker and his wife lived in a little cottage in the Harz Mountains with their children. Hansel and Gretel. One day they were home working while their parents were out selling brooms. Work being tiresome, the children start to romp about the room. At the height of their frolic, their mother enters weary and unhappy. She scolds them and sends them into the forest to gather strawberries. Afterwards the father re- turns and missing the children asks about them and is horror-stricken about their being alone in the woods after nightfall. Both mother and father go looking for them. Meanwhile the children are roaming the woods filling their baskets with strawberries. Heedless of direction and time, eventide finds them in the dar- kening forest, haunted, as they believe by fairies and witches. The frightened children cower beneath a tree and fall asleep with a vision of the fourteen guardian angels around them. When the children awake, they notice for the first time, a beautiful little house made of dainties. This is the home of a wicked witch, who en- traps boys and girls and bakes them in- to gingerbread. They break off tasty morsels from the walls. The witch ap- pears and casts a spell over the children. She shuts Hansel up in a cage and tries to entice Gretel to bend down in front of the oven, so that she may push her in and bake her, but meanwhile Hansel manages to get free and pushes the witch in instead. All the gingerbread children are set free. After several hours of searching, the mother and father find their children and everyone gives a chorus of thanks. Fourteen angels watch do keep Angels Both! You've come to visit me, that is sweet! You charming children, so nice to eat! The spell is broken. We're saved, we're freed forevermore. 26 Beginning Instrumentalists FIRST ROW: Henry Riley, III, Clarinet; Viola Nill, Clarinet; Vicki Irvin, Clarinet; Judy Black, Clarinet; Janet Schwarm, Clarinet; Julie Lee, Clarinet. Under the capable direction of Mrs. D'Wight Peirson the music schedule was as follows: On December 22, the grade school gave an operetta entitled Han- sel and Gretel. During basketball season the St. Paris High School Band performed at home games , giving the spectators a chance to see how much the band has improved. Several new band members were active in the band shows. On May 9th the band gave a program reviewing the band shows they did during the year and also some new music. St. Paris was also fortunate in contest work this year. Students participated in the Jr. Hi Contest at Covington on February 26, and also the High School Solo and Ensemble Contest at Urbana on March 5th. On March 22 a group from Boys Chorus, Girls Chorus, and Mixed Chorus was chosen to represent our school in the County Music Festival. The Spring Musical program on May 20th concludes the music pro- gram for the year. Numerous other performances by school music groups have been given at Chapel Services, P. T. Although outside it was cold and wintry, within the Johnson-St. Paris gymnasium there blossomed five beautiful flowers. This was the night our Homecoming Queen and her Court reigned over our last basketball game of the season. The Court consisted of: Sally Baker, a senior, escorted by Joe Fergus, a junior; Linda Ginn, a jun- ior, escorted by Louis Jones, a junior; Rita Long, a senior, escorted by Jimmy Wren, a senior Judie Wil- liams, a junior, escorted by Bill Poling, a junior. Her Majesty the Queen, Carolyn Rushaw, a senior was escorted by Ronnie Allebach, a junior. Crown bearer, Pamela Daiken escorted by Andy Hoes. The girls wore lovely pastel colored dresses of pink, aqua, blue, and white; the boys wore ties and tails . The Johnson-St. Paris Band had the honor of bring- ing in this Court. The Band played Sweetheart of Sigma Chi . This night was not only beautifulbut very victor- ious, for the Salem Tigers bowed to our Tigers 98 to 50. After the game a dance was given in honor of the Queen and to celebrate our victory. Champaign County Track Meet 1955 38 Champaign County Track Champs The Roaring Tigers Of 1955” Sports Roundup And this, sport fans, is a summary of the sports highlights of the year. As the basketball season opened we were defeated by the Westville Cowboys 55 to 47. The squad ended the season with a record of 15 wins and 8 losses. The big- gest upset of the year was in the tournament when we beat Concord in the last game to give us the title of runners-up. To the surprise of all the spectators the Tigers defeated the Concord Bruins 60 to 56. At the tournament in February we lost our first game. This was when Rosewood had their revenge, for they took us by surprise and downed us 62 to 52. Our boys were not discouraged, but were more determined, beating Urbana Local 78 to 54;C-Jackson 50 to 49; Triad 51 to 50; and then wound up in runners-up position beating Concord 60 to 56. District, here we come! was the shout from everyone in the crowd. As was our luck we picked the favorites, Bradford, but this did not discourage our boys either, for they really scared those giants! However, we lost 55 to 49, but the boys really deserve a lot of praise for the way they stood up and fought, and we mean FOUGHT! Ronnie Allebach led the scoring with 401 points during the season; other top scores were Wren, 362; Jones, 200; Fegus, 186. Spring soon came and the track season was open. We had several practice track meets at Rosewood, Salem, and Covington. Then came the county track meet. Although Rosewood had defeated St. Paris in the previous meets, St. Paris won the county trackmeet with43 3 4 points; Rosewood came in second with 35 1 4 points. Fergus was the meet's individual winner with 13 1 4 points, but Clem was right behind him with 10 1 4 points. Fergus won the 100 yard dash and the 220 yard dash. He was also third in the shot put, and was a member of one of the winning relays. Clem won the high jump, was second in the broad jump, and was on both of the winning relay teams. Wren was on both relays, was third in the broad jump and tied for fourth in the high jump. Poling was on both of the relays, was fourth in the shot put, and fourth in the 220 yard dash. Phil Louden was our distance runner, coming in third on the mile and fourth on the half mile. We can't forget our pole vaulters, Louie Jones and Ronnie Allebach, for they were second and third in this event with Louie second and Ronnie third. We were mighty proud of our team in the county meet. From here we went to the District Meet at Springfield, where we took third place in the 880 relay which qualified us for STATE! At State our boys did their best. Although they failed to qualify, they have made a record that we will always be proud of. These were the highlights of the sports this year. The fellows did a wonder- ful job, and you can't forget about the coach, (the best!) Sam Marchio! The only thing we can possibly say at this time is Yea, St. Paris, Tigers. May they al- ways roar as loudly as they did this year! Written by 39 Going Home Rockefeller Plaza A Council Chamber of the United Nations. The Bowery 40 et your shoes shined in the Bowery! Times Square at night Typical New Yorkers! ! Class Of I955’s Trip To New York Statue of Liberty A glorious day for the Johnson-St. Paris seniors was Wednesday, April 20, 1955. This was the day we left for New York to spend four wonderful days in the big city. We arrived Thursday morning 8:30 A.M. From the station we went to the Taft Hotel where we stayed while we were in New York. We had a tight schedule with many things to see. Among the many things we did were: A three hour cruise around Manhattan, a bus tour of Upper and Lower Manhattan, a guided tour of Rockefeller Center, a visit to Radio City Music Hall, a visit to the U.N. Building, and a view of the city from the Empire State Building. The boys, of course, saw the N.Y. Giants defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers 5 to 4 at Ebbets Field, while the girls saw a Broadway musical called Plain and Fancy.” A wonderful time was had by all.!!!
