Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1982 volume:

Each year the doors at Johnson-Brock open loJ iother exciting school_ year. Many things will take place during the upcommg nine months. Schod . events roll by day by day, new frieMs come arl o, and many changes will take place. Throughout our yearbook, we've Wvided our activities by seasons, so our pictures and special events progress along with the three seasons of our school year - fall, winter, and finally, the long awaited spring. Our division pages symbolize how things change with time and this is represented by the tree and how it changes with the seasons. We also picture a wishing well which reminds us that goals can be achieved and dreams don't have to be mere elusions. You are never given a wish without the power to make it come true . We hope that within these pages you will find the photographs and words to help you recapture the spirit and the theme of the 1982 EAGLE, The Best of Times . Don't forget to use this book to remember a face, recall a place, relive a game, or to remember a name. Enjoy these memories because they truly are The Best of Times . 1 1982 THE EAGLE Volume 14 Johnson-Brock Schools johnson, Nebraska 68378 TABLE OE CONTENTS Fall ......................... 3 Winter ...................... 25 Spring ...................... 45 Editor .......... The parade, the new idea of helium balloons, the football game, the announcing of royalty, and finally the dance. Music for the dance was provided by DJ Les Drake. Through and through the 198 1-82 Homecoming (sponsored by the pep club) was enjoyed by all. 7 Spirit, Pride, Football Team - Back row left to right: Jeff Eitzmann, Kyle Finke, Paul Connolly, Brian Clark, Dale Ossowski, Brad Volker. It took the usual hard work, hard hits, hot, long prac- tices, running in extreme heat or cold, with and without pads on. But this year it also took a lot of spirit, pride, and a special kind of dedication. This special kind of dedication was present all year long. The men on our football team ended up with a 0-8 record but still they played every game with energy, hard work, spirit and most important, pride in them- selves, the football program and the Johnson-Brock school. In August, 1981, eighteen men will- ing to have this special effort and dedication came out for football. Coached by Sam Smith and assisted by Steve Senff, the 1981-82 football squad had some disappointments yet they had some good recognition. Tim Alberts was honored with honor- able mention and other awards by papers, and Tim Cobber was presented with an All-Conference Team honor plus many additional awards from local papers. Many people will remember the record of this team but many will remember the dedication, pride and hard work displayed by the football team. When remember- ing this, it is easy to feel proud of the football team and the coaches that made up this special team. Coaches deciding whit to do next. The play is centered around the trials and tribulations of a young teenage girl (Sandy Grotrian) and her rather conservative family, the Carols. In the play a challenge race between Ginger and Eddie (Rich Michel) leads to a lengthy debate on the question of the equality of the sexes. Ginger decides to take this question to task. Against the frantic urging of her father (Scott Gilbert), her boyfriend (Dale Ossowski) and her principal (Matt Oestmann) Ginger decides to join the Varsity Football Team! The plot thickens when Ginger's sisters (Arlis Caspers) and (Amy Rogge) object to their sister's athletic antics and plot to insure that Ginger will be a social outcast as long as she persists in playing a Man's game . Ginger's father, Howard Carol; finds his job at the bank jeopardized by Ginger's activities and the bank President (Jim Grot rain) relates to Agnes, Ginger's mother (Kim Gerking) the horrible spectacle Howard is making of himself supporting Ginger's football games. However, between Liz, the family maid (Jackie Hawley) and Mrs. Carol, all things turn out for the best, and Ginger realizes that being a girl isn't so bad after all. The embarrassment of a younger sister. 14 Ginger asserts herself to her irate principal. Mrs. Carol reprimands Ginger. Practices included working with the weight machine, rebounder, toss back, leaper, jump ropes, and the weighted balls. The players also put on many miles running around the gym and running sprints to get them into better condition for the season. The pictures on the last two pages are shots of our teams in action. Included in these pictures are shots of the Girls Varsity when they played Humboldt who ended up as Class D Champions at State. The boys are also pictured during their Humboldt game. Tim and Tammy are shown taking part in a Pep Rally Relay Race as representatives from the basketball teams. The thrill of not having the same classes, the thrill of having no homework, and the excitement of getting out of the dull day to day routine was present in all students and teachers. This year some of the popular classes held were: challeng- ing games, candy making, ma- crame, racquetball, tennis, fishing, history, Zig Ziglar attitudes and goals, sign language, guitar, and powderpuff mechanics. There were still many more classes available to the student. These classes proved to be very educational to the students and also a fun way to learn. Sonia Kistner helps Mary decorate her sugar Easter egg. Diane straightens Ranae's plant. 31 One-Act Play Goes To State Here I thought you'd think less of me! Two Fools Who Gained A Measure of Wisdom was the title of this years One-Act Play. The state qualifying cast included: Scott Gilbert and Sandy Grotrian as star-struck lovers, Tammy Haack as the not- so-clean maid, and Jackie Hawley as the old, cranky, rich, embarrassing aunt. The cast received a Superior at the District One-Act Play Contest, which enabled these performers to qualify for the State Contest. On January 29, a blizzard-like day, the cast and director packed up and journeyed to Kearney where they received their rewarding rating of Excellent. The play was directed by Meg Bretz and Kim Gerking as the student director. Two fools . . . the p ir of them. 32 Speech Team Front Row - Michelle Brehm, Scott Gilbert, Kim Oestmann, Paul Connolly, Sponsor Miss Mellor. Middle Row - Curtis Brehm, Christine Volker, Sandy Grot rim, Artis Caspers, Kim Alennder, Terri Cunningham. Back Row - Cary Longsine, Tammy Haack, Tim Alberts, Kim Gerking, Jackie Hawley, Dale Ossowski. Gary Longsine qualified tor state in Extem- poraneous speaking. The 1981-82 Speech Team had a very busy and successful year. They started by attending the Nebraska City Invitational, then moving to Conference where they won second. They also received 2nd at District, but the State meet was the impossible dream. Although they did qualify for state, they were unable to attend because of illness. Even though Kearney was not possible this year, there was a lot of hard work, hours of rehearsing and the joys of receiving medals as many of our speech team participates did. 33 Stale qualifying OID holds a heated discussion during one of their many practices. Jubilation, Celebration and As a Plant Upon the Earth were the two songs the chorus took to District Music Contest. When the Chorus ratings came out there was a flood of disappointment. The Chorus had received an Excellent rating, but in the hearts of all the chorus members they got a Super- ior. Along with District Music Contest the Chorus also performed at a Christmas Concert and a Pre-contest Concert, both held at Johnson. The reputation of the chorus became stronger this year and all the members felt that Chorus is For Us. This is Jubilation Celebration wonderful day! 34 District Music Contest A Success! District Music Contest was once again a successful event. Pictured on this page are a few of the participants. Those per- formers rating Superior were: Band, Percussion Ensemble, Clarinet Quartet, Diane Sohn- holz, solo. This excitement was continued with successful seasons in both Vol- leyball and Football. This spirit persisted with the Boys Basket- ball team winning First Place in the J-B Invitational. Both Boys and Girls teams finished with 5-1 records. The track season also brought success. The girls won the Conference track meet while the boys placed Third. Track season this year was full of success! Throughout the spring the track teams experienced many emotional moments, along with many cold, rainy track meets. Both track teams this year saw a great change in size, this made a difference in attitude, team spirit and support. Along with the hard long hours of work came a lot of rewards. Many J-B students walked away with medals this year, also many new records were set. Once again, the big event was Mark Hoffman qualifying for state in three events, the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and the 400 meter dash. The girls were coached by Ron Meyer and the boys were coached by Steve Senff. 55 The record board at Johnson-Brock saw a lot of changes this year. This year 7 new records were added. The girls 3200 Meter Relay team consisting of Julie Gilbert, Laurie Holland, Janice Meyer, and Amy Cunningham put up a new time of 10:50.6 after their run at the district track meet. Mark Hoffman broke the 200 Meter Dash by sprinting a 22.8. Mark also qualified for the State Track Meet, but was unable to run at the meet because of a strained back. It was a disappointment to everyone, but everyone was still very proud of Mark and his accomplishments. Kyle Finke had his name added by running 48.7 in the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles. Amy Cunningham was a multi-record breaker. She broke the 400 Meter Dash record with a time of 67.1 and the 800 Meter Run record by running 2:39.9. Julie Gilbert also set two records. Besides the 3200 relay, she also had the 80 Meter Low Hurdles with 18.0 being her record setting time. Kathy Riggins, not pictured, broke the long Jump record with a leap of 15'5’ to add her name and distance to the record board. 56 Marilyn Bohling takes it one step at a time. On May 9th, the Class of '82 consisting of 22 members graduated and took the first step to a new life. Smiles mingled with tears was the scene that day. There were smiles of accomplishment and tears of leaving friends who you came to love during the years. All left J-B with fond memories. Memories that are both sad and happy.
