Student Life ... full of new and exciting ideas, that’s how the JB school year started out and our student body is still changing. For instance students are adjusting to new teachers, and teachers are adjusting to new students. Both the teachers and students had to adjust to semester tests, which were new this year. Mr. Cool” (Kevin Swanson) has struck again! Mr. Schulze Assists Jeff Broach and Rod Alexander in fixing a transmission. Decorating the lockers to show spirit for a big Diane Sohnholz displaying her enthusi- asm during a volleyball game. 2 Always Something New You're going to be sorry! Miss Hazen heading towards chorus. Another exciting day in study hall. Jane Dunekacke playing her French horn in pep band. Pam Ottemann modeling a new style of basketball warm-ups. Some other changes in JB were a new class schedule, which took some time getting used to since some students didn’t get to eat until 1:00 P.M. With the schedule change came the addition of some new classes ... Advanced Home Ec., Mass Media, Electronics, and Weight- lifting. Students also had new’ rules introduced to them this year. But by the end of the semester most students had adapted to them. 3 JB Takes On New Looks Thf ( reen Thumbers add the finishing touches to the classroom window . Since the beginning of the school year, Johnson Brock High School has been bursting forth in many areas. Besides new faculty, new students and new rules, our school, itself, has been taking on some new looks. During early fall, six Green Thumbers from Beatrice, NE, were busily doing the small, but important, tasks that added to the appearance of JB High. An interesting “new look” appeared on the school’s front lawn one late October evening. The clever sign attracted a few amazed looks the next day. 4 EDITOR: Connie Bassinger Would anyone like to buy a used school building?? The Big Guys Football this year took on a little different look and not because it was eight man, but because of a 4-5 record. This year it seemed that the team had a plague of injuries. Five seniors and at least 1 junior were injured during the season. The good leadership of the sen- iors, the coaching, and team work helped give the Eagles a better than average season. Senior Jay Eitzmann helps celebrate the home- coming victory even though he couldn’t help on the field. In the 1979-80 season the volleyball girls under the coaching of Mrs. Carol Obermeyer and Mrs. Judy Grotrian, ended the year with a 7 and 9 record. Four of those losses were to one team, Elm- wood. This year the girls worked hard, starting in the middle of August and going until November. They had rhythm, style, and attack methods; in other words they had dedication to the sport. They improved 100% on all the existing records from last year. Kate Bruggeman was selected All Confer- ence, Diane Alexander was 2nd team and Linda Gerdes and Karen Gerking were Honorable Men- tion. The team also traveled to Lincoln for a Valen- tino’s pizza party and to watch some volleyball games at the University of Nebraska. 44 Diane (ierdes is substituting while the opponents look worried. Dennis Bidne struggles to make up for precious time, lost while going up a steep hill. ‘ ?.'■ S-w Jst Don strides out to make that last mile. Bob Harvill grits his teeth while a timer gets ready to give him his finishing number. Sneaking by another runner. Alan Rig- gins keeps on trucking. This year the Cross Country team just couldn’t come up with the speed to win any meets. But due to the coaching of Mr. Schulze and the ambition of the 5 boys out for Cross Country they managed to make a good showing at every meet. Mr. Schulze urges David Hawley on just by being there. 47 BOYS’ BASKETBALL Top Row: Coach Steve Senff. Jay Kitzmann. Rod Alexander. Joe Bednar. Dennis Ridne. Jeff Broady. Don Riggins. Winning the Homesteader Conference Tourney of the Eastern Division was one of the highlights of a very successful year for the boys on the 1979-80 basketball team. The boys under the leadership of Mr. Steve Senff bounced to a 14-7 season. The boys got to play one of the best teams and State Cham- pions in class D, Filley, for the Homesteader Divi- sion Championship in Sterling but were defeated. The boys had high hopes at the Districts but had a heartbreaker as Brownell-Talbot defeated the Eagles in an exciting overtime game by the score of 66 to 65. As the season closed the boys looked back and decided that all the hard work paid off. Dennis Bidne and Jeff Broady made first team and Rod Alexander made second team in the Hom- esteader Conference Basketball team for the East- ern Divison. Hurry Jof. put it in before they figure out here the hall is! LETS GOGETEM! Another perfect lay-up for Jay. Get your dirty hands off my ball! Don, don't drop the hall on your head. Please Jon this is no time to he doing a juggling art. SO GIRLS’ BASKETBALL A lot of hard work and desire during the season boosted the girl’s basketball record to 9-9 this year. New coaches, Ed Rastovski and Eldonna Hazen, had their work cut out for them as the coaches showed the girls new and exciting plays. The first game of the season turned out to be a loss to N-V, but exciting wins over Auburn and Nebraska City Lourdes made the girls understand that just one basket counts A LOTI The girls came back at Dis- tricts to beat the team that had beaten them the first game of the season. They defeated N-V by 2 points but lost to Adams. Becky Gauchat made honorable mention and Linda Gerdes and Wendy Sheuy made second team of the Homesteader Con- ference Basketball Team of the East Division. The girls had fun on and off the court. When you didn’t find the girls playing basketball you might look in the Home Ec. Room, at Miss Hazen’s place, or on the bus playing huckle buck. Top to Bottom: Wendy Shuey, Kim Oestmann. S3 BOYS’ TRACK The 1980 track season proved to be a good one for Mark Hoffman, who went to the State track meet in Omaha to participate in the 200 meter dash. The 2 mile relay team, made up of Don Riggins, David Borrenpohl, Dennis Bidne, and Bob Harvill placed 5th in Districts. The 400 relay team of Don R., Don D., Mark H., and Brian B., placed 4th. Alan Riggins placed 5th in the 2 mile run, with Mark Hoffman placing 4th in the 100 and 2nd in the 200 meter dash. Don D. placed 6th in the 330 low hurdles on his first and only run of the year in this event. The rest of the season w as fair due to the amount of injuries. Joe Bednar has a good chance of going to State in the pole vault, but was injured before Districts which pre- vented him from vaulting to his full potential. Over all, the season was better than last year’s by the slimmest of margins. TOP RIGHT: TRACK TEAM: Front, left to right: Mark Hoff- man, Todd Boellstorff, Brian Boellstorff, Don Dirksen. The 2-mile relay consisting of Paula, Teresa, Lisa, and Pam placed. Marga- ret Bednar showed her ability by placing too. The team traveled to Peru, Adams Int. and to Nebraska City. The girls had most of their track meets along with the boys. The track season had its ups and downs; it was tough to go out and run with some of the best girls in the districts and to run hard. But with some nice weather and some nice looking guys it was all worth it. You call this track practice? Tersa Blinde. Fam Ottemann. CREATIVENESS SHINES THRU Annual staff... nobody knows what they’re getting into until they’re on it. All those meetings where only half the peo- ple show up and it’s nearly impossible to get anything done and yet you still try, those end- less discussions trying to decide on the lay out of a page, thinking up unprintable captions, and of course, getting those tremendous head- aches when you just know you’re not going to make your deadline. 75 By defeating the Table Rock Tigers 48-34, the Eagles made the J-B fans very happy. “The Main Event” was chosen as the theme and the week started out with Mon- day as “Red day.” We continued the week with days such as clash day, mourn day and hats off day. The play was about a rich col- lege girl (Dody Brewster) played by Karen Gerking, who became possessed by evil spirits. Arlan Holthus (Murdock Fav- ersham) plays the bad guy who placed evil spirits in Dody. Arlan was assisted by Dawn Bidne (Mrs. Delehanty), who was a dingy old lady. The play involved eight different skits on what life was about. There was the Writter, The Sneeze, The Governess, Surgery, The Seduction, The Drowned Man, The Audition, The Defenseless Creature, and The Writer again. These skits start out with Arlan Holthus as the Writer who presents all of these different stories to us. In “The Sneeze,” Jay Eitzmann por- trayed a character who sneezed on a high government official (Don Dirksen) and finally died because he was so ashamed of himself. Tim Gobber plays a doctor in “Surgery” who tries to pull teeth but is not too successful as Tim Alberts finds out. And then Jay Eitzmann attempts to seduce Diane Gerdes in “The Seduction.” In the second act Daw n Bidne crawls all over Mark Caspers and makes a pest out of her- self in The Defenseless Creature.” The Writer comes out again at the end and ties up all these skits make “The Good Doctor.” TOP: The Writer — Arlan Holthus. Many thoughts were racing through our minds as we marched towards the last ceremony in the excitement of our high school days — Commencement — Sunday, May 18, at 3:00 p.m. For many of us it ws the most important Sunday after- noon in our lives. The processional of 29 graduating Seniors was lead by honor guards Wendy Shuey and Dave Borrenpohl. Ushers for the afternoon were Diane Alexander, Kathleen Brug- gemann, Lisa Volker, Jeff Oestmann, Dale Remmers, Sta- cey Richards. Pastor William Hazard gave the invocatin and bene- diction. Memory filled speeches were given by our Valedic- torian, Karen Gerking, and our Salutatorian, Diane Gerdes. Pastor Roger Hoffman gave a talk on “The Same Music, A New Dance” saying that our future is what we make it. Mr. R. W. Remmers, Superintendent, presented the Class of 1980, and Mr. Eldon Bohling, President of the School Board, awarded each member with his diploma. This event will be cherished by all of us for a long time. 89 The Seniors march down the aisle toward freedom. Being in school, and taking part in the extra curricular activities are a big part of stu- dent life. Students were never left idle at games or during school. Many things were to be done and most times, there was a willing volunteer to take over. The new experiences we all faced have made us realize that school can be a fun experience and, at the same time, a learn- ing one. During one of the Family Living sex talks, Mrs. Obermeyer concentrates on one of the more difficult questions students ask. 93 Students were kept busy throughout the year with different activities such as working in Pep Club and getting decorations ready for Spirit Week. Spirit Week was held the week of January 14-18. Each class had a portion of the gym to deco- rate. The Senior class won 1st place, with the Soph- omore class coming in 2nd. Student Life took on a cleaner look last fall when the Pep Club had a car wash. It was held on Sep- tember 29 on Main Street in Johnson. Close to 30 cars were cleaned, inside and out. There were also a lot of wet people. Even some injuries were received — stepping on glass. A bake sale was held in con- junction with the car wash in the front of the Fire Hall. Many of the goodies were sold, and the profits went to the Pep Club. J ?. Don's car didn't prove to be too big to wash.
