What one person thinks of as con- servative, another thinks is radical. It all depends upon their outlook. It’s like everone sees the world through their own private window. Some peo- ple's windows are beautiful and ornate — like church windows. Oth- ers are simple and old-fashioned — like a four-paned window. Still others are clear-faced and open — like a picture window. Some are rose col- ored and some are broken and dirty. The point is that everyone has dif- ferent opinions — every man’s is dif- ferent, and yet every man believes he is right. And that is what we’re try- ing to show in the 1979 EAGLE — everyone’s opinion, everyone’s out- look on the 1978-1979 school year. Holly Gerdes, Kathleen Brgggeman. and Jenny Stutheit share their opinions during study hall Some people feel the world is wonderful and intricate, almost as If they were looking at it through this window 2 Members of the crowd reveal their different reasons for coming to a basketball game RaLonda Lewis and Marc Cooper show a different outlook on study halls than that of the girls on page two You are the window through which you must see the world George Bernard Shaw 3 ' 'V The different attitudes towards singing are reflected by the posture and facial expressions of the members of the chorus Marc Cooper waits for time to pass It is not doing the things we like to do, but liking the things we have to do. Goethe 4 Lisa Volker struggles along during basketball practice Kevin Swanson and Jeff Broady take their afternoon naps Mark Nelson. Kevin Simmons, and Mike Gilbert come to school because they enjoy being with their friends What should a person be involved in at school? Should he do his lessons and go home? Should he participate in every activity he can possibly cram into his crowded schedule? School can be whatever he wants it to be Some go to school to prepare themselves for their future lives, some for the fun of now. and some because they haven't any choice Some go to school primarily to develop their mental ability, some for their physical ability, and some for their artistic ability. People attend school as members of the crowd or as loners Some try to do their best — and others try to get the best out of others. Some sharpen their own competitive powers and some learn to support other peo- ple. School can be the focal point of a life, or it can be something that drags on, taking a big chunk out of the day, when there are better things to do It all depends on the outlook, the window it is seen through. It helps if the outlook is favorable since most people have to go to school, and most for thirteen years — which can be an awfully long time to be miserable, because you hate school. Bottom left Sophomore boys take advantage of their time to talk with each other Bottom right Kelly Stutheit and her escort dressed up for the social event of the school year — prom 5 The more you do the more you are Angie Papadakis ACTIVITIES Hopelessly Devoted to J-B Fans may have felt a little hopeless after the football game on October 6. The D-V Jets defeated the Eagles 60 to 22. However their true devotion showed when a large crowd gathered in the gym to dance to the Dusty Blue band. King Ryan and Queen Linda reigned over the festivities. Pep bend shows their spin! during an Eagle yardage gam Kevm Swanson escapes his Elmwood attackers 8 Ojeen Linda and King Ryan beam happily Lmda Caspers and her crew work on the decorations on the southwest corner of the school grounds 9 And the Farce Goes On Star Wars is. back People attend- ing the fall play may have felt like they were traveling through a time machine. One moment they were hearing a familiar barnyard song sung by mftmbers of a spa called McDonald's Farm. The next minute creatures from a distant galaxy were honking and glipping and planning the destruction of the world and the E.l.E.I.O. May the Farce Be With You was directed by Mr Jim Buffington. Several individuals, Duet-Acting and Oral Interpretation of Drama won medals at the Conference contest. The One-Act play won first place at the J-B Invitational One-Act play contest. Three weeks later, after the Conference speech contest, they came home with the number one trophy from the District contest in Nebraska City where they competed against 15 other schools. Out of the winning effort came four individu- als who qualified for the state contest. That winning effort proved what team spirit really is about when freshman Tim Alberts filled in at the last minute for Sandy Rogge, who was ill. SPEECH TEAM Front Row. Mr James Burlington. Nobody's the same No matter how far you look, you'll never find someone who is exactly like you, or exactly like your friend. You’re different, you're special, you're you! During the 1979 school year, the students, especially the seniors, suddenly started discover- ing more about themselves. They found that they weren't carbon copies of each other — they each had different talents, different ideas, different fea- tures that made them special They stopped expecting themselves to be good at everything, and they stopped laughing at everyone who had a style different from tneir own. They stopped try- ing to make everyone agree with what they did or what they thought. They stopped being members of the crowd and started being themselves. They let others express opinions that they didn't agree with. They learned the golden rule of friendship — to listen to others as you would have them lis- ten to you. Confusius We are of different opinions at different hours . . . When people disagree, it makes for a lot more excitement. It's really bor- ing when people sit around saying yes, I agree, I agree.” Classes are more enjoyable when students argue over dis- putable points instead of agreeing with whatever the teacher or the text- book says. Club meetings get more done when members openly express their opinions — a lot more people are satisfied with the final results, too. And there is nothing more frustrating than trying to decide which movie to go to when all anyone will say is I don’t care.’' Jett Broady shows what he thinks about getting his picture taken 58 Sandy Rogge. Voltaire Steve Clark plays Peek-A-Boo The senior basketball girls show their favorite style of shooting baskets You don't always encounter the neat kind of different — sometimes you meet up with the strange kind of different, the bizarre kind of different. Everybody likes to do those wild and crazy things once in a while and there are some, whose entire outlook is rather unusual, to put it mildly. There are those people who enjoy putting frogs in lockers or pulling fire alarms or setting off smoke bombs. There are people who can make a con- versation composed entirely of the word Later.” There are those who get a strange thrill out of turning teachers' desks around backwards or tying hangman’s nooses in the shade pulls. There are even people who can trip over a chalk line. These people take fierce pride in being different. They try so hard to be different, they often seem a little weird. These are the people that provide a comic relief to the everyday life at school, and they are some of the person- alities about whom stories will be told to future generations. Ware or really clicking'' when performing a play or the peculiar silence you hear when studying by yourself on a sunny after- noon or goofing off when you're supposed to be reading The Scarlet Letter Many students get a strange lump in their throats, when, at the end of a school year, they realize that they have lost some- thing that they’ll never have again, that things will never be the same. This is obvious for the Seniors, after all, they are not coming back next year, they have started to put away their childish things, but it follows for everyone else as well. They may be coming back to the same school, but there will be change. They may lose a good friend, or make a new one. Perhaps one of their favorite teachers isn't com- ing back next year. A death may affect their families. But the big- gest change will be their own — they won’t be the same people next year, they will have grown a little more, they will have changed their outlooks in small ways . . . maybe all glory comes from daring to end, to say good- bye to things that are past. 95 Index Alexander. than — 17. 24 29. 32 35 37 46 47 Alexander Kim — 3. 24.26.31 33.46.4 36 37,lJ 43.50.61.63 93 Ambroz Brad - 16 22. 36 Ai ends Duane —43 B 8as .naer Conme — 3.22.26 34 46 55 62 .89 71 Bauerme ale .
