ACADEMICS The Bachelor class means it when it says, We can do anything you can do, to their women 'libbers' . Here is proof . Not only do they know how to thread and operate the machine, but they've become quite good at laying the pattern on the mat- erial, cutting, following pat- tern instructions, and making garments. Two new classes added to the Home Ec curriculum this year were Consumer Econo- mics and Family Living. Both of these were co-educational classes offered to Seniors. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING Many students were enrolled in Industrial Arts and Trades and Industry classes atJ-B. Courses offered were wood- working, co-ed shop, drafting, and Trades and Industry which was new to the J-B students this year. It consisted of general construction procedures. Some of the projects com- pleted by members of these classes were: a camper, hog- sheds, loading chutes, picnic tables, footstools, lamps, mag- azine racks, and numerous other projects. They also re- finished many antiques. so Speech was included in the English curriculum this year for both the Sophomores and Juniors. The concentration of study was on the basic techni- ques of public speaking and con- versation. Students presented several speeches during class. Also, students read child- ren's stories to the kindergar- ten and the first grade. NEW AND DIFFERENTTO LEARN Advanced Speech was added to the curriculum this year. The students participated in many different speaking and dramatic activities as well as debate. This class was the backbone of our school's participation in the various speech contests. Karen Gauchat and Jeanne Vol- ker represented J-B in the State Contest. In addition to these representatives, LuAnn Blinde and Kathy Kohrs received Sup- erior ratings at the Conference Contest. One of the highlights of the course was the production of the film Trail of Terror or How to Bag A Conman . The class worked on all aspects of the production and showed the film for the student body. 51 STUDENTS FACE NEW PROBLEMS Physics and Chemistry are taught on a yearly alternating basis at Johnson-Brock. This year Physics was taught. The Junior and Senior Physics students studied energy in several forms. Here they are conducting an experiment pertaining to wave lengths. This knowledge was later used in their study of light waves and sound waves. This year the senior Eng- lish class had the advantage of three teachers. Mrs. Suzanne Tachovsky started the year out and was replaced by Mrs. Gail Sheely the second nine weeks. At the semester because of a change in curriculum the class was taken over by Mrs. Terry Zimmers. Main concentration of study was in British Literature, as exemplified by the reading of the MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE and PYGMALION. Experiments such as independent reading and class leveling were also undertaken. 52 High School Art students found this class to be one in which they could express them- selves in a variety of ways. After developing styles and techniques in lettering and poster making, students were ready to try sketching and painting. Block printing decoup- age and batik offered interesting diversions. THE EXERCISE OF EDUCATION The Freshman Algebra class covered such topics as sets and numbers, real num- bers, problem solving, graphing relations, and sys- tems of equations. They fin- ished the year learning about factoring polynomials, and studying exponents and radi- cals. Other courses offered were Geometry, Terminal Math, Advanced Algebra, and Advanced Math. 53 POTENTIAL LEADERS OF TOMORROW BETTY CROCKER HOMEMAKER OF TOMORROW AWARD WINKER: Dorothea Neddenriep. coxforo • usu NATIONAL MATH EXAM WINNERS: Myron Hahn, third place; Dale Smith, first place; Dennis Wagner, second place. The volleyball season for 1973-1974 began with about 30 enthusiastic girls in late August. That enthusiasm led the Eagles to 3rd in the Conference Tournament and 2nd in the District Tournament. Their hard work and effort payed off when the girls proudly brought home the two trophies. To earn the conference trophy, J-B defeated Lourdes after having lost to the Sterling team in the first round. In the District Tournament the team claimed the Run- ner-Up Trophy by first winning over Humboldt, Nemaha Valley and then being defeated by Southeast. The season ended with 9 wins and 6 losses.
