UNDEFEATED FOOTBALL TEAM I960 brought Johnson High School their first undefeated football season and probably their finest team in the school's history. With excellent coaching and great team spirit the Big Red came out on top of a rugged schedule winning 9 straight games. With their fine team-play the Eagles were rated fourth in the state by the LINCOLN EVENING JOURNAL and ninth by the OMAHA WORLD HERALD. Seven lettermen made the nucleus of the team for Coach Stiers--seniors: Paul Dunekacke, John Gilbert and Gary Schemmel; juniors: Lonnie Bruggeman, Norman Michel, Jim Moore and Larry Dean Oestmann. With a very potent offense and an average defense the Big Red outscored their opposition 373 points to 131 points. Paul Dunekacke led the team in scoring with 169 points followed by Gary Schemmel with 121 points. Dunekacke also led the team in total offense with 836 yards rushing and 305 pass receiving yards. Much of the Eagle's offensive success must go to the fine blocking furnished by the line. Paul Dunekacke and Jim Moore led the defense with 180 and 107 tackles respectively while the team collected a total of 795 tackles. The highlight of the season was the 41-18 Shellacking of Adams in Johnson's Homecoming victory. For two years consecutively the Eagles have been the only team to defeat Adams. Post-season highlight was the selection of Paul Dunekacke to the LINCOLN STAR 8-man All State Team which highlighted a most successful season.
