Coach Stiers sent the squad through a gruelling nine practices during the first week. The first loss was chalked up to inexperience as Elk Creek walked over the Eagles. The Johnson-Talmage game was one of the lowest scoring six-man games in the state with the score totaling only 22 points. After a 5-3 record of an up-and-down team, the Omaha World Herald rated Johnson fourth in class A.
