P W M605 Our Shlny black l1mous1ne 1S cru1s1ng down the street at a steady pace past the res1dent1al sectlon and mto the busy downtown theatre d1str1ct Everyone 1S fest1ve w1th ant1c1pat1on for we are on our way to see the prem1er performance of the play entltled Class of 1953 After a short t1me our car rolls to a stop 1n front of the theatre wh1ch greets us Wlth many b11nk1ng neon s1gns We enter the bu11d1ng and f1nd our reserved seats on the a1s1e Before the curta1n goes up we read our programs and fmd that the open1ng scene takes place on September 13 1949 and the place 1S Johnson Creek I-hgh School M155 Ardell Sm1th and Mr John Blttner are the d1rectors of the f1rst scene An amb1t1ous cast of f1fty s1x 1S Waltlng pat1ent1y to perform for us let's s1t back as the housellghts d1m and the curta1n goes up to w1tness the open1ng performance of the ' Class of 1953 The scrlpt reveals to us that the fol1ow1ng days were qu1te busy A dance was g1ven so that the members of the largest class ever to enter J C H1gh m1ght get acqua1nted The1r float They re In the Stew won th1rd pr1ze 1n th homecom1ng parade Members of the cast lost throughout the f1rst scene were Barbara Larson Suzanne Germundson Jan1ce Ster11ng Robert Heger Esther and Edw1n Lauersdorf However they were very happy to welcome a new member Betty B1nger Those deservmg curta1n calls as the f1rst scene ends were Faye Nelson R1chard Nelson Carol Fetherston Jean Hemke Mary Jane Schuld and Kenneth Ohrmundt After a short 1nterm1ss1on the curta1n r1ses on scene two wh1ch beg1ns on September 5 1950 Mr Arthur Kautza and Mrs Blanche Baker are the producers of the scene They have lost fourteen members of then- or1g1na1 cast but were proud to add Velga M1ske Roger Seavert and Robert Hustad as understud1es One of the act1v1t1es wh1ch was engoyed by everyone was a roller skatmng party at Janesv111e They aga1n won th1rd place 1n the homecom1ng parade wlth the1r float They'1l Never Pull Through ' As the curta1n falls everyone was lookmg forward to the follow1ng year when they would be upperclassmen Outstanduxg performances throughout the scene were g1ven by Donald Staude George Sch1ldbach Faye Nelson Patr1c1a Kopp Carol Fetherston and Rlchard Schuenke Everyone agrees that the f1rst part of the play was wonderful and we now walt expentantly as the curta1n r1ses Mr Ch1tWOOd Mr Kautza and Mr Sunby were the d1rectors of scene three wh1ch began September 4 1951 6 -.xs A 1' 9 . , ' . , . 9 - .. . - . . .. . A new member Carl Bartz was added to the roll of players As t1me progressed they lost s1x performers R1chard Nelson Valerxe Fuerbrlriger Velga lvhske Robert Hustad Jean and .Ioan Hemke The plot durmg the f1rst weeks of school centered around the arrmval of the1r shmy new class r1ngs and the wlnmng of th1rd prxze w1th the1r float We re Lay ng For Oregon A smashmg success occured when the actors presented the all t1me favorxte Cheaper By the Dozen as the1r class play The cllmax of scene three arose w1th the Jun1or Prom Apr1l 18 1952 found a wonderful crowd danc1ng to the muslc of Jerry Bllhngton s orchestra 'Stars are the Wmdows of Heaven was the theme for the event Kenne Ohrmundt re1gned as lung and he chose Faye Nelson as h1s queen The gyrn was decorated w1th s1lver and whlte twxnkhng stars blue streamers and plcture wlndows An observatory served as a punch stand To br1ng the scene to a happy end1ng the players were t1ed for the honor of rece1v1ng the sp1r1t cup As the curtaln falls am1d a ra1n of applause Donald Staude Ne1l Olsen Faye Nelson Sh1rley Olsen Donald Buerger and Patr1c1a Kopp are worth of the theatrlcal cr1t1cs appralsal As the curtaln r1ses on the flnal scene we f1nd that the cast has been reduced to th1rty two members w1th the loss of Pearl Schlesner The scenlc work for the last part of the play 1S under the management of Mlss Tobler and Mrs Odland After a very successful football game the performers were 1n charge of the homecommg dance Blue and yellow balloon footballs w1th other decorat1ons toast1ng the team adorned the gym K1ng Donald Buerger and Queen Patr1c1a Kopp relgned over the feSt1V1t1CS Bob Strege and h1s Goosetown Dutchmen furmshed the muslc for the even1 g On October Z7 the class went to see the very thr1ll1ng drama entltled the 'Merchant of Ven1ce It 1S hoped that the members w1ll apply some of actlng tactlcs whlch they saw 1n the1r own sen1or class play Star performances 1n scene four were glven by Donald Buerger Dennls Sukow Lurae Pxtterle Donald Staude George Schllbach and Shlrley Olsen The amateur players have learned much from the1r Johnson Creek dlrectors and producers dur1ng the past four scenes Graduat1on day w1l1 br1ng the play Class of l953' to an end and then the actors w1ll have to go out 1nto the world to perform the1r own 1nd1v1dual rolls large or small the stage of l1fe 7 l i ' . . , . , . .
