ULHSS PHUPHEUU It IS June 1980 Another n1ne months of teachmg commerclal courses was over and a new cycle ln my career was about to begln For three months I was to travel lnto many states on an educatlonal lecture tour Thls was an exc1t1ng asslgnment because on the fourth of July I was to talk ln Johnson Creek on the Value of Independence Durlng my career the only one I had been able to keep ln contact w1th was Dorls Zastrow who was now Mayor Allen Boettcher s nght hand woman Mayor Boettcher s off1ce was located 1n the center of the downtown park I had always been sure that Dorls and Allen would make good They were both on the commlttee arrangmg for my arrlval so I had nothlng to worry about Soon the b1g day arrlved and as I sat on the Johnson Creek Llmlted I could not help but wonder what my fr1ends would be l1ke but before many mlnutes passed I was ln Johnson Creek As I got off the traln and stepped onto the platform there was Phylhs Lambrecht w1th her Cornet playzng Auld Lang Syne Mayor Boettcher and Dor1s were s1ng1ng the lyrlcs Phyllls IS now busy 1n her pr1vate school where she teaches muslc We exchanged greetlngs and declded to take a taxl to the home of Mrs Albert Spark where I was to stay We declded to patromze Ralph Uttechs taxl company when we read the touch1ng llttle verse he had hung above h1s stand It read Uttechs taxls are here to be hlred So take a rlde or the drlvers wzll be f1red We lured a tax1 drlven by the boss h1mself and consequently arrlved at Jamce s home 1n plenty of tlme to freshen up before golng to the park We walked from Janlce s home to the park Iremarked about how the streets had changed especlally the one comme' up from Main Street headed for Hlghway 30 Jan1ce 1nformed me that Roy Mekelburg had been appolnted as street cornm1ss1oner and was dolng a wonderful Job He takes great prlde 1n hls work As we walked I found out that Marvm Schuld had become the ch1ef park cleaner I remembered that 1n h1gh school he had been good at p1ck1ng thlngs up especlally bowl lng plns The park was before us It was a plcturesque affalr decorated ln red whlte and blue I was thrllled at the slght but then I saw another s1ght not qulte as 1nsp1r1ng It was a plump llttle man operatlng a candy shop We walked toward lt It was fllled w1th every type of candy and so was the proprletor whom I learned later was Jon Flsher After purchas1ng a Flsher spec1al called Jon the Atom Bomb Dorls Jamce and I were aga1n follow1ng the crowd down the mldway Dorls called my attentlon to the next stand only a few feet away A neon s1gn was proclammg for all to see Do you look a slght? Try Mlke' He makes you look alr1ght Imaglne my surprlse when I d1scovered that th1s was Mlke H1gg1ns That red crop of ha1r he owned had broughthlm fame as a ha1r styllst T1me was runnlng short so we dec1ded to head back to the playform As we walked toward lt I mentloned to my compamons What ever became of Bette Lee Sto1tenburg'P She was always a go getter ln school She st1ll IS rephed Dorls Rlght now she s over ln that booth takmg recru1ts for the army Sure enough there was Bette Lee energetlcally ravmg about the advantages of the A1r Corps and what lt offered to all young men She was so engrossed 1n her work that we dldn t bother her 14 . . . . . , , Q Q ' u n 1 1 1 1 I as - - 11 1 1 1 Q - 1 . CLASS PROPHECY cCOHtlHU9dD We arrzved at the platform and 1mmed1ately Mayor Boettcher mtroduced me to the audlence for approxlmately one half hour Before I reahzed what happened I had begun and concluded my talk After my speech was over and I had descended from the platform I mentloned to my compamons th1s mother and her fam1ly She looked so fam1l1ar I sald he should sa1d Janlce Don t you remember Betty Klockow'? Qu1ckly my mmd returned to my school days Betty was the petlte l1ttle mlss who was always gay carefree and full of fun My thoughts were lnterrupted when I caught slght of a low long sedan whlch drove 1n the dr1veway An attractxve blond stepped out and over the loud speaklng system announced that Mayor Boettcher was wanted 1n C1ty Hall xmmedlately It seems John Lund who has been elected Mr Flrecracker of 1980 was to lead a parade through town to Trachte Park but there was a cute blond who was walkxng ln frontof hlm and John forgot h1mself and led the parade mlles out of the way Mayor Boettcher told h1s chauffeur Mary Quest to locate John and try to lead h1m back to the park It was a d1ff1cult asslgnment but before we left the park that day Mary had lured John home As we contlnued walklng we notlced an odd mechamsm called a Loop O Plane operated by Sh1rleyAltreuter and Arletta Genz Arletta lured 1n the gentlemen cus tomers and once xt started operatmg Shlrley scooped up all the loose change wh1ch happened to fall from the unsuspectmg male customers pockets We thought thls r1de was a llttle rough for us so we declded to have somethmg to eat were m1x1ng together some unusual concoctlons but soon they got the better of us and we set out to look for a cold drmk stand The cold dr1nk stand was operated by Dorothy Roos and Roberta Buss Whlle we were wa1t1ng for our cold drlnks I notlced across from the park a huge br1ck bu11d1ng The slgn whlch hung over the entrance gate read Krause s Crowded Quarters What s that I asked Dorothy An old folk s home she replled It seems that Ros1e had been proposed to but she took too long to say yes She was now runnrng a home for the aged By thls tlme we had f1n1shed our drmks and started on our way home Just as we were about to leave the park we were stopped 1n our tracks A powerful vo1ce over the loud speaker was announclng Rabenhorst s Racmg Rabblts Come see these amazmg httle carrot cravers Only a nlckel to watch th1s amazmg spectacle Well naturally we had to see Glenn s rabbxts so we retraced our steps and pald h1m the f1ve cents When the race was fmxshed we were determxned to leave We made our way through the crowd and flnally got outslde the gate Mayor Boettcher s car was there and we were taken sw1ftly to Jamce s home Hastlly we pxcked up my luggage and started for the tram depot Sayxng good bye to Mayor Boettcher and h1s welcommg commlttee and all those who had made my day successful I boarded the Johnson Creek Llmlted Yes none of my classmates had become world famous yet they make up for what Amerxca represents 15 . . .-,, ..,,, ..,,S We found a small sandwich booth operated by June Blasing and Ruth Cromey.
