Dedication This yearbook is dedicated to the val- iant men who have lost their lives in Vietnam in hopes that the world might be free from agression inyears to come. These men fought for what they be- lieved in. They have not died in vain for their cause, but rather opened a new passageway for international peace. In remembering them, we must also remember that not all of these soldiers were white men, red men or black men, but ..... our men. - B. Graduated from Syracuse University with a B.A. degree, Miss Shaul has since taken courses in as widely separated parts of our country as the University of Wisconsin and the Audubon Nature Camp in Maine, bringing back to her classes new insights every year. Former students, scattered all over this globe, remember her high standards in class, her keen interest in nature-and her sense of humor. They remember her as class advisor, as leader of field trips, as spon- sor of Biology Club and Science Congress exhibits. Present students crowd the biology laboratory, not realizing that this is the last year her dedicated teaching is going to be demanding their best. Her colleagues think of her leadership in the Southern Zone Science Teachers Associa- tion, her loyal participation in Johnson City Teachers Association and in New York State Teachers Association, her active support of the Natural- ists Club, of Roberson Memorial, of the Fine Arts Society, and of her church. Whether you were dissecting a fish or painting a landscape, manipulat- ing a microscope or wearing that Wildcat jersey to a game, ,Miss Shaul- we shall miss you! Johnson City, underdogs at the start of the season, pulled out victories which left the fans breathless Mr. Lane and his team worked hard for each game winning 14 and losing only 3. The Triple Cities player of the year Tom Gomulka had a great season but it was not him alone who made it a winning effort. Bud Silvanic's rebounding, John Mihalko's fine defensive plays and Dave Lashier's marvelous ball handling contributed to the great year. basketball JOHNSON CITY 1966-67 VARSITY BASKETBALL Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson City Johnson C ity League Total LEAGUE SCORES ..80 ..94 ..60 ..72 ..65 .,55 ..79 ..90 ..60 ..74 ..59 ..74 ..59 ...8l 1002 CV . Y - We'd like to take this op- portunity to recognize Ray Lesso as a member of our class, but he has chosen to spend this year as an ex- change student in Santa Cruz , Bolivia. Ray left the streets of Johnson 'City in August and saw the sun shining over New York, Miami, Panama, Guayaquil, Lima, and La Paz Qwhere he lost his lug- gagej, before he finally Javier Tortone Last summer, sixteen-year-old Javier Tortone left his parents, his nineteen-year-old brother, his friends, and his hometown of San Francisco, Argen- tina, to come to the United States as an exchange student. Javier has lived with a number of families in the Triple Cities, and is presently residing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Lesso, whose son Ray is an exchange student from our school to Bolivia. Registered as a senior in our school, Javier takes courses in chemistry, social studies, English, typ- ing, and chorus. Back in Argentina, Javier was also a senior in high school. There he took eleven subjects and all these were prescribed by the school officials-that is, he had no choice as to what subjects he took. Because high school students attend school only in the morning in Argentina, Javier generally managed to have only two or three classes of each subject per week. One of the biggest differences between our daily high school routine and Javier's back home is that the teachers rather than the students change classes in Argentina. Coming to the United States didn't present to Javier his first experience with the English language. He had been studying the language for over five years, three of them as an academic course. Javier speaks reached Santa Cruz. There he lives as the Bolivians do, he enjoys fiestas, movies, and the caballeto. Popular music consists of-would you believe-old Elvis Presley records? A Friend from Argentina English very fluently now and is able to present his ideas very well. Perhaps the biggest difference that Javier can dis- tinguish between teenage life in the states and in Ar- gentina is in the hours that we stay out and the hours that he and his friends stay out. Javier says that it is customary for dances to begin at around eleven o'clock at night and to end at about four o'clock in the morning at homeg here they last from about eight or nine o'clock until midnight. He also says that he prefers parties back home to parties in the United States because kids dance at parties in Argentina, while they don't usually do so here. Another differ- ence Javier notices is in the rate at which we do things. Everything is done so quickly in the states while in his homeland things are done more slowly. On July 29, Javier will return home to his family and friends. He has had a wonderful time in our country, and I am sure it will be an experience he will never forget. We, too, will never be able to forget Javier's warm personality and his friendly smile. We surely will miss his fine character and he certainly is an excellent representative of our Latin-American neighbors to the south. It has been a great honor and pleasure for our student body and faculty to act as host to you, Javier Tortone. cross country ROW 1: Paul Magargle, George Pichura, Mr. George, John Walluk, Mark Sterner. The Wildcats were al- most champions. With three games remaining and two games ahead of M-E, they dropped all three games to sv, M-E, and the league champions, Vestal. There were many outstanding performances. Bob Griffiths, the team's MVP, started the season by pitching a no-hitter against Seton. He finished the season with a .356 B.A. and a 6-2 pitching record QERA-0. 511. John Durgala hit a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the seventh to beat CV 5-4 to give the team a psychological lift. Al Costello struck out eighteen batters in a 2-1 win over U-E. Ron Barber, selected the most improved player, had his sharp curve working to beat CV 5-1 during our try for first place. David Skoniec- ski, our excellent lead off batter, had a B.A. of . 319 and was selected to play in the all-star game i.n Cooperstown. The team captain, John Grassi, provided leadership and outstanding performances as catcher. The Wildcats featured hustle, good pitching and defense to win their ten games. They lacked hitting power to win the close contests. Four of seven one-run games were lost.
