C.? There was the time for football and the time for basketball, there was the time we sleepily en- tered our first period class and the time we gratefully left our seventh period class. . . There were the times we dashed frantically into the building at 8:24 and ran to our spacious lockers only to have all the books and papers fall out into ourfaces and onto the floor. . . There were the times Assembly, during a program or a pep rally. . . There were the times after the games, at the dances, and after classes at the Snack Bar. . . There were the times we didn't do our homework, and so, of course, the teacher called on us first. There were the times we gazed dreamily out the study hall watching it snow, or nearly broke our necks trying to see the cute guy three seats behind us. . . There was the time of graduation from 9th grade, and the wonderful time of the Senior Prom and our graduation from J . C . There were all these times and many more events we will always recall with a pang of Nostalgia as time goes by. . . M . Cosgriff THE TI EPIE E YOUNG VARNEY BENDEROFF X Y 3 . Boys are selected to ioin this club by teachers and the present members on the basis of their record in school, extra- curricular activities, and their character. This year, as usual, they put out the handbook, the Rouser , to acquaint the sophomores and new students with the school. A new project this year was a series of hot pie sales. They proved to be very popular with the students. Again this year, they decided to let the faculty win the volleyball game. As representatives of the best male stu- dents, they are ready to help out at any time and always appear as an active and happy group that is a definite asset to the school . Sandy Rafter Pat Ulbrich News Editor Circulation Editor The new look came to J.C. this year by means of the school paper, The Maroon . The cover page was designed under the supervision of Mr. Vanda, and printed by Mr. Evers and the print shop. The rest of the paper was typed by several students, and mimeographed by Miss Crimmins. The Maroon has a two-fold purpose. First that of any other paper--telling what's going on. The second purpose is to give students, especially those interested in journalism, a chance to write for and run a newspaper. The entire paper is put together by students under faculty division. Anyone who wishes can write for the Maroon merely by going to one of the student editors and asking for an assignment. The paper includes news articles, inquiring reporters, boy and girl of the month, athletes of the month, celebrities, boys and girls sports, teachers of the month, and several other features. This year the editor-in-chief was Gloria Boga and assistant editor Phil Young. The other editors were Sandy Rafter, news, Ruth Opal, feature, Pat Ulbrich, circulation, Kathy Rafferty, girls sports, Joe Leonard, boys sports. The team was coached by Joe Giannetto, who led them to a fine 4-1 record, be- ing beaten only by the Central J.V.'s. Vestal's team also ended up with the same record and in a playoff game Vestal was beaten by a spirited group of boys T3-O for the Triple Cities Championship . Congratulations to a fine J .V. team for bringing home the championship for the first.time in several years. vARslTY FooTBALL ln 1957, we at Johnson City were very fortunate to have Fran Angeline, from Colgate, as our head coach. The team took to him right away and liked their new offense, the split-T very much. Our season started September first with double sessions work-outs. By the time the first game rolled around everyone was in fine shapeand iust waiting for the opening whistle. We lost a close one, T3-7, to Vestal before a capacity crowd at Johnson Field. Two weeks later, after working extra hard on the hill after every practice, we were scheduled to meet the highly favored E.F.A. squad. We lost our chance for a big upset in the last minutes of the game when they tied us up 12-12. The rest of the season we managed to beat Union Endicott and smother visiting Onondaga Valley. Our season might have been brighter, but we were hampered by injuries to several players before our key games. We can however, be proud of our team staying in there and giving every team a rough go of it all the way. 76 VARSITY FOOTBALL 77 for fl SO led sec T1 5-C- I C D Q- U 'U C U CD C I O X Q2 Joe Kolley . ecldaugh, Bruce :Z xi go 9 -DO '-C Us PN: -2: 4?- Keeley, D ndeen, el, Tom Pufmcn, Dick an .. as I .9 U N 6 1 'U 2.2 u-Q .N U .X ego .E-9 E: -CP' Lji gn. -s . ' s . s 81 TRIPLE Himsa P10 BOWLING The Bowling Team had a good season This year under the supervision of Mr. Clark. They have again won the Triple Cities High School Bowling Championshi . The close games were with Central and Chenango Valley. The varsity included Bill Friediuh, Roger Karns, Dan Walikis, and Jim Alamo. We hope J .C . will always have a great team as if has had in the past. 82 OLLEYB LL The Volleyball Team in the Johnson City High School was more than iust a team of well- coordinated and well-versifiecl boysg it was a team filled with spirit ancl sportsmanship. The sportsmanship showed brilliantly when the team lost three games to Central and three games to North. But not all was a failure, for along with eleven losses in all, the team won ten games, four coming from behind showing that the spirit on the team was terrific. OF course, a good coach is all important and we have one of the best in Joe Ciesielski . 83 . . HEERLHADER J .V . If she is on a winning team or is in archery club, she receives three points. When she has accumulated nine points, she is eligible to get her school letters which she receives at a sports banquet. TRIPLE SPORTS The triple sports include soccer, hockey, and speed ball . They are played after school, and last until about Five o'clock. The teams are found in the back of the school battling it out for top team. These games take a lot of skill and sometimes get pretty rough, but it's worth it to the champions, who find themselves three credits closer to their letters. BOWLING Bowling is another sport popular among the girls. The girls meet every Tuesday and Thursday at the R8.R Bowling alleys after school. The girls are divided into sixteen teams. Half the teams play on Tuesday and the other half on Thursday. Each girl bowls one game. There is also a chance of entering the Junior Bowling Contest, which is held February 22, and March l. SOFTBALL Softball is another sport which most girls like very much. After the girls are divided into teams, they meet after school and play seven innings of very exciting baseball. There are two games played each night four times a week. The winner of the Senior-Junior teams meets the winner of the Junior-Sophomore teams. They battle it out for the championship. The winning team is three credits richer. ARCHERY This is a sport strictly for the girls in J .C . The young archers are taught by the members of the Archery Club who have already mastered the art by getting a total of 150 points with 30 arrows. lt may look very simple but just try it sometime. The young Robin Hoods can be seen in the back of the high school with their bows and arrows every noon in the fall and spring. Members of the Archery Club are given the chance to compete with other schools and really show their stuff. They also get three extra credits for their school letters. g VOLLEYBALL This is another sport that is open to all girls who are interested in getting their J.C . letters. The girls are divided into teams and each team plays ten games. The top teams play each other for the championship. The champions win three credits toward their letters instead of one. BASKETBALL The girls who are interested in basketball really have a chance to show their skill. They meet twice a week and battle to win. There are 16 teams of T0 girls each. The teams are divided into two leagues Sophomores and Juniors, Juniors and Seniors. The winning team from pach league plays For the championship. The winning team receives three credits for their etters. 89 I n A fl : E IOR J ,,v . f A ANN MARIE cuBuLsy4Y 5 'H v W U ' ! cones R ac: 0 A. GLORIA BOGA f r 0 .. Xa v Blu.
