An anniversary is always a good theme For a yearbook but this birth- day took us by surprise. With the annual well on its way to publica- tion, we found that a notable year was slipping by without proper men- tion. Quick changes - revised copy were all in order to match the event. You had not expected that time and tide would flow so swiftly perhaps. May I say to you that it is a fine honor indeed to graduate from high school in this or any year. lt ,is quite a unique added distinction to carry the 1905-1955 Golden Celebration flag of your Alma Mater in this long procession of classes. You are thoroughly worthy standard-bearers. We are closing our public school careers together this year, you and I. Undoubtedly we both shall experience some deep-seated misgivings in this. Old friends, old familiar scenes, and old accustomed experiences, are not readily and easily put aside. But you will be going on to new fields of interest and action and to new scenes, peopled with new friends and business associates. I want to wish for you, each one, cl brimming measure of the happiness that comes with good health and right living. Success, as measured in terms of ranch-type homes, savings bonds, or sports roadsters, can be expected to follow in the wake of right living. Your next 50th Anniversary will be a golden one, literally, if ou will but follow through cleanly, confidently, and courageously, alpna lines which you already have partly established for yourselves. Those years have had their ups and downs but for the most part have been happy ones. If I hadn't been quaranteened out of school with measles, I would not have come to Johnson City. I was at home when I received notice ofa va- cancy in Johnson City and so didn't receive the contract for another position until after I had agreed to come to J .C . I wondered where J.C . was for I had never heard of it. Inquiring of our postmaster I was told that it was formerly known as Lestershire. I came down for a personal in- terview. At that time Supt. Smith told me to report Labor Day. Labor Day arrived. I reported as I had done elsewhere but found the school closed. After some time I finally found that I was to report on Tuesday morning. If I remember correctly, I found nine other teachers beside the principal, Miss Blair, and Supt. F.M. Smith. Only two of these teachers are still here. Mr. Eccleston re- turned from World War I in December and took over the B. Biology. We had about I5O pupils in all four years of high school . The grammar department occupied the third floor. The east end of the present building had been opened two or three years previously. The west end, auditorium and gym- nasium were added in I926. My work that first year consisted of four Ele- mentary Biology classes, Chemistry and Physics. The following year a Biology teacher was added and I continued with Chemistry and Physics. Later I taught Physical Geography and Health. The school has grown from I5O in four years of high school to over 800 in three years of Senior High. I have taught 2,55I students in the 37 years. The faculty has grown from IO to 45. The girls and boys are about the same with possibly increasing outside interests as the automobile, radio and T.V. have come into more general use. When I have talked with teachers at state meetings, I have come to the conclusion that J.C. hasa pretty grand bunch of teachers and students and a very considerate Board of Educa- tion. It's with both eagerness and regret that I leave J.C. I have enjoyed my work here but there are many things I'd like to do in the years ahead. I shall remember you and hope to see you in the future. - Edith 'Her Ziff RNQ ,5 T 'Sl' C7 Wifi A , ZhZ4 , - ni . 1124 is s C 14 if, gffiifff --f 335 -'P'.: .Pm : 1- -' ' J'.j,,5v,Z .. ROSE SULLIVAN Head of the English Department Who walks with Beauty has no need of fear, The sun and moon and stars keep pace with him, Invisible hands restore the ruined year, And time, itself, grows beautifully dim. Time in the process, however, marches not on, it speeds. And the years succeed each other with startling rapidity. Even Johnson City High is aging, she's now celebrating a golden anniver- sary, her fiftieth birth-year. Externally she looks a little more weather- beaten in the winter, perhaps, but eternally young and blooming each spring, seated mid her shrubs and well-kept lawns. Inside the building parade the usual changes, fresh paint now and then, fluorescent lights for the lucky ones whose names came out of the hat that time, senior faces replaced by the freshmen's over and over and over, a fresh young counten- ance occasionallyseen at teachers' meetings and around the halls thereafter. Minor happenings and quiet, it's true. We have suffered upheavals too, but those we're letting time dim. This year we, in J.C.H.S., will be particu- larly sobered and saddened by the departure of two of our best friends: Howard Eccleston, super- intendent and wise counselor of ours and Edith Carpenter, head of the science department, and our close associate . Many will remember these two for their out- standing contributions: Mr. Eccleston, for his new buildings and additions to other buildings, as well as his outstanding work in supervision, Edith for the fellowship she was awarded from Adelphi College. That's the kind of thing we like to remember, it gives us a vicarious thrill. However, I can never forget the two individ- uals themselves: their gentle kindliness at all times, the many thoughtful actions so unostenta- tiously performed and, above all, the living testimony they portray, that gentleness is a most prized asset. MISS EDITH CUTTING English Teacher, Director of Senior Theatre 0 In T918 Edith M. Carpenter came to Johnson City to teach science. During the years she has taught chemistry, physics, biology and physical geography. The science department has grown and she became head of it with several teachers under her able guidance. During the years she has held various positions in New York State Science Teachers' Associa- tion including director tor Southern Zone T942- 445 chairman 1949-51. Besides state and zone activities Miss Carpen- ter has sponsored active science and photography clubs in Johnson City High School and has taken MISS ETHEL HERBERT Head of Social Studies Dept., Advisor ot U.N. Hi-Y Club an active part in civic and educational organ- izations. Outstanding among these is her work in the League of Women Voters and in Elmira College Club. The pupils of the high school have expressed their regret at the resignation of Miss Carpenter because she has earned their admiration and re- spect b her motivation and stimulation for bet- ter worl as well as her sympathetic understand- ing of the problems of youth. Those who went on to institutions of higher education came to appreciate the background in science which they had gained in our high school. CLAYTON WILDEMAN Social Studies Social Studies Social Studies Greetings to the Class of T955. The faculty of Johnson City High School will miss the loyalty, cooperation, judgment and friendly spirit of Edith M. Carpenter. She has exerted a tremendous influence on the improvement of science in our school and it was fitting that she was made a Fellow of the New York State Science Teachers on July l, T954 at Adelphi College. We shall miss Edith but we hope she will en- ioy many years working at her hobbies and traveling to places of interest. When Howard B. Eccleston became superin- tendent of the Johnson City schools in T928 fol- lowing Frank M. Smith, our community began to grow and the need of new schools was obvious. Since he has been head of Johnson City's educa- tional system the C. Fred Johnson Junior High School was built, the Lincoln Elementary School and a large addition added to the Harry L. Johnson School. We, also, have a thriving evening school for adult education . Under Mr. Eccleston's guidance our system has been progressive but has not lost sight of the need for teaching and drilling on fundamentals. A school system does not consist entirely of buildings and equipment, important as they are, but equally important is the scholastic and spiritual character of its faculty. The head of an institution has so much to do with the whole tone of a system. By choosing and holding people who are competent and happy in their work, friendliness and good will permeate the entire group. Most teachers have been happy to work in the Johnson City system because of the friendliness and ease with which any teacher may talk over his problems with the head of our school system, Howard B. Eccleston. His gra- ciousness and kind words have inspired, en- couraged and challenged all of us in Johnson City to make greater efforts in developing more effective ways of teaching. The students of Johnson City have felt free to go to their superintendent and discuss their prob- lems because they know he has a keen under- standing and love for boys and girls and enioys the success of former pupils. After retiring, Mr. Eccleston will have more time to devote to cultivating his flowers, mak- ing articles in his work shop, perfecting his golf, and best of all playing with his grandchildren. - E . The editors of this yearbook have asked me to dust off the crystal all and attempt to suggest, with the help of the stars, what the future holds for our schools in Johnson City. As the room becomes dark the crystal ball be- gins to glow with a deep, rich and majestic light which seems to radiate into every corner of the school. This school which has been so meaningful to students and teachers alike who have studied and taught within these four walls. The light in the ball becomes brighter as on closer examination I see it is focused upon two figures whose influence has extended beyond the building and into the lives of thousands of men and women who now live throughout the length and breadth of these United States. One of these figures is a woman who has devoted her teaching years to the service of our girls and boys. The other is a man, who has been first, last and always a teacher, but who spent much of his career as one who guided the school pro- gram by selecting the members of the profession- al staff and then helping make available those tangible supplies and equipment necessary to supplement the work of the teachers. The two figures recede a bit into the back- ground but continue to survey the scene as other teachers surrounded by ever-increasing numbers of girls and boys take their place. Additional buildings containing new classrooms with added equi ment and services, which have been a part of the vision of these two people, come into view. As I look closely at the teachers who ap- pear in the crystal ball there seems to be a great measure of satisfaction for a job well-done. There is a new look of respect, dignity and hon- or which has been gradually accorded the teach- ing profession. This has come about as a result of higher standards of professional attitudes and conduct and the attempts which have been made to bring the school and the community closer to- gether. The younger membersof the staff I note, are those who graduated from this and other high schools but a few years before. They were the finest of their graduating classes and have chos- en teaching as their profession. The students I l MR. KENNETH MYERS Johnson City's choice to succeed Mr. Eccleston to the village's highest educa- tional post. who surround them have discovered new chal- lenges in school and eagerly participate in the work of the academic classroom as well as de- bate and drama clubs, science, language, art and musical activities. The scene shifts slightly away from the building and on the High School Memorial Field there are groups of boys hard at work, preparing themselves for the next football or baseball season. Others are limbering up on the track after a strenuous season on the basket- ball court. Other students, girls and boys alike, are enjoying hockey, archery, tennis and soft- ball. As I return to the building I notice there are other students who have perhaps returned to the school after having spent a part of the day in a cooperative work program which is giving many of our students an opportunity to combine the theoretical with the practical. Other students are still in the classroom giving time to extra preparation for competitive examinations that may bring prizes and scholarships. There seems to be in all this activity, a degree of purpose in the minds of teachers and students alike which began many years ago and is now asserting itself in a most positive way. And now the ball grows a little darker - but just for a moment - and when the richness of color and light return the many students and teachers have moved into the background. Into sharper focus comes again these two people who have meant so much to Johnson City High School. There is a light of pleasure and contentment which sur- rounds them for they are happy with what they have just witnessed. That part of their lives which has been shared with the profession and with thousands of students is evidenced in the fact that those who have continued on have held to that which was good and have tried to make it better. And though the light may fade a little in the crystal ball it never goes out for the deeds that people do live forever. O 5 S Y f i WE, s. 5 A. s it I l A Q .. ,Nm A Capella Choir. His was an enviable position, but with it went heavy responsibilities which he shouldered courageously and wisely. lt was he who guided the youth of our town, ad- vised them, and followed their careers with keen interest. He gave generously of his time and money, neither seeking publicity nor wanting it. Those of us who became members of the Johnson City school system considered ourselves truly fortunate. He knew how to encourage his teach- ers with a warm, sincere smile and a cheerful greeting. His criticism was always of a con- structive nature. As the year rolled along, wherever a few of us gathered, we spoke of them. These conver- sational comments speak more eloquently the feelings of the commercial faculty on the re- tirement of Howard Eccleston and Edith Carpen- ter than any formal message of mine. As I re- call some of them, they went like this: Said Leona Doig: Was there ever anyone nicer to new teachers than Edith? Mr. Eccle- ston is the best listener I have ever met. He al- ways makes time to talk over your problem with you, and he makes an effort to see it through your eyes. He's the most capable and consider- ate superintendent a school could haveI Said Selma Schmidt: When I think of Mr. Eccleston's going, I feel as if part of the school itself is going. I have known Edith Carpenter only a little while, but every time we meet she is so pleasant and friendly. Said Goer e Miner: In Mr. Eccleston's own 9 0 words to us on many occasions, 'They have done a fine iob.' Said Lillian Heath: Who could be nicer to go to no matter what your trouble or your joy? Mr. Eccleston is so understanding of everyone. I can remember Edith from when I first had her for my teacher. She was a mighty good teacher then and she still isl The only thing the years have done to her is to make her better looking - isn't her hair beautiful? Said Margaret Lallier: Howard started his teaching career in my hometown, Amsterdam. When I came to teach at Johnson City, it was like 'coming home.' He has been a tried and true friend ever since. She was always so willing to help and her judgment was always so sound. Said Gene Baxter: Mr. Eccleston is a most welcome visitor to any classroom. The students and teachers alike enjoy having him come. Even my sophomore B's don't seem to mind when that smiling face appears over their shoulders to watch the efforts of their fumbling fingers. Edith isn't like some teachers l've heard about . . .instead of letting down with the years, she goes on to bigger and better honors right to the end. Long after they have left us to enjoy their well-earned days of leisure, we will continue to reminisce. Many little things in our daily rou- tine will remind us of them, attesting again and again to the fact that though they may retire from this scene of their faithful labors, they can never retire from our hearts. Their many and sustained kindnesses throughout the fleeting years have endeared them to us beyond the power of time or distance to dim. lt is fitting that this golden anniversary year is their retirement year for it would be hard to find two educators of more sterling qualities to adorn so jeweled a year. They are pearls of great price personally and professionally. ln their names we have only one hope and one pledge - that the good work started by each of these master teachers will prosper - that it may be beautified in the hands of worthy successors. To the best of our ability in commerce we will do our part that this may be accomplished. When it comes to good wishes, we have many too many to enumerate but all of them are well summarized in the words of an old and favorite lrish prayer: May the road rise to meet them May the wind be always at their backs And may God hold them In the hollow of His hand. for the Commercial Department - Marie Reynolds ? Eccleston. We cannot express adequately our apprecia- tion for the friendliness and human understand- ing he offered whenever any of the staff were having personal difficulties. We know he was genuinely interested in our problems. lt has been a pleasure to have worked with Mr. Eccleston during the years knowing that he understands the problems in teaching. His work of encouragement in recognition of our efforts tx ,X L ,- V w s if x px - always made it much more pleasant to surmount difficulties that are sure to be met in teaching. The entire community has profited by the wise administration of Mr. Eccleston. The welfare of the children has been of paramount importance in his life as shown by his genuine interest and concern for all phases of our school activities. His cheerful greeting - always time for a word or two - has made him lasting friendships with the staff. Loyalty to him and his ideals was the natural result of his own personality. ax j V agp T TQ ,S ,, i R ' 5 MR. BROOKS . Reflecting upon the merits of our JohnsonCity school system at this fiftieth anniversary, we realize how much we owe to the wise adminis- tration of Howard B. Eccleston and our splendid Board of Education for the prevailing atmosphere of industry and harmony. As new methods and philosophies have been presented to the educational world, they have been weighed here carefully, some have been accepted, not because they were new, but be- cause they were better. By using the bestiof the new and the best of the traditional, we have maintained a healthful balance between the progressive and the conservative. Our grad- uates, who have done so well in competition with those from other systems, will agree, l am sure, that Johnson City has served them well . We are sorry indeed to lose Mr. Eccleston and also Miss Carpenter, who has given so generous- ly of her time and talents. We wish them con- tentment in well-earned retirement and hope that their successors will enioy the same high esteem of the entire school personnel . - Anne Courtright MlSS WIGHTMAN Math teacher C 9.1 2 W Vs, Refi- H :af-Q1 ,Q 1 x JA at W at f ii 11 it ig i at 4 : 5 I' fi' z. fm! . -.fx - .,, 5. 1, 1fp,i.,1igtg3 ,fs L5 v3s....+., W f es: 1:-with ii ef B if -... fx MR . Sometimes the end product is good, sometimes not so good, but the all- important fact to remember is that each and every member of the staff is alwa s trying to turn out a paper which is tops. And, believe it or not, the members of the staff are hu- man. lf you don't believe it, look at who's on the staff. . .some of the most human humans in the school. The work is divided into several phases: writers, walkers, 60 talkers, drawers, and add- ers. The writers naturally write, the walkers naturally walk to advertisers to obtain adds, the talkers talk and keep other staff members amused while they work, the drawers draw those funny pictures on the editorial page, and finally the adders add up the to- tals at the end of the year to find out how far in the red Maroon finances have iourneyed during the course of the year. ln relation to the Maroon the stu- dent body may be divided into two general work groups: the doers and the don'ters. The doersdo PAT JUDSKY swag? MR. GARRETT Maroon Advisor, Social Studies teacher May the light of virtue show the way. . . subscribe, the don'ters don't. Ap- proximately forty percent of the stu- dent body are consistent doers, forty percent are consistent don'ters, the remaining twenty percent are some- timers . . .sometimes doers and sometimes don'ters. If more of the don'ters became doers then more of the walkers would become Writers, and the adders would use more black ink instead of red. However, all's well that ends well . . .thanks to those who helped and blub to those who didn't.
