Harris Jr. (Head Football Coach 1979-84) A Job Fulfilled God chose you as a teacher and coach. For you touched many lives. And each one with an abundance of love, understanding and caring. The many football players, faculty and .staff who icere fortunate to experience your guidance and friendship will forever value it. And now, God has asked for your help in his kingdom. We will remember your gentle smile and strong heati. Farewell until we meet again. By: Mrs. Ella Mae Harris YongE. Ki)n Jones In Memory Of Mr. Levi McKinney (Physical Plant) 1978-1987 Death We u ' ill not question ulii you were taken from us. Nor will tve shed tears in your absences. Instead, our hearts will fill with happiness knowing that you have gone to a better place. You will be missed by friends, family, and loved ones. All who were touched by your ivarmth, wisdom and kindness. So sleep peacefully my friend. For you have earned your rest. By: YongE. Kim Jones J. C.S.U. Brings Beauty Back To Biddle Biddlc Hall, one of Cluirlottc ' s oldest buildings, is under going restoration processes. The 109 year old building with the help of a half-million dollar grant from The Duke Endouinent. will be saved for another century. Its Victorian like striuture can be seen from different parts of the city and is the centerpiece of Johnson C Smith Universitij. Biddle was tiamed for Major Henry J Biddle. whose widow donated )noney in 1867 that helped fouiul the institution that later became Johnson C Smith Unirersity. Alma Mater We love Thee Smith with all our hearts! To Thee we ' ll ever he true. And in the li ht of truth and ri ht Hold hi h the Gold and Blue. Proudly we hail thy name, our Alma Mater Our S.U. Johnsim C Smith, our (ncn! Our hope, our fiuidinfi star, our lip,ht unfailint ! Pride of our loyal hearts, tvell love and honor thee Oiu ' whole life through On, ever on! dear old J.C.S.U.! II Fair Smith, where ' er on earth ice roam. Send forth thy eonstant ray And let it beam with steadfast leam To lead us o ' er Life ' s way. The 4-Year Change Going through college is almost synomjmoiis with going through changes. Whether you ' re at J.C.S.U. for four years, ten years, or Just one quarter, chances are that the experiences you ' ve had have affected who you are — and why you are that way. Changes can be physical — ask anyone whose l.D. pictures bears little resemblance to him now. Or whose freshman years clothes are yards too big or sizes too small. Through less obvious, changes in personality, lifestyle and personal beliefs also come about. Remember a freshman, the kid who never drank, cleaned his room and got up for church every Sunday? Did it surprise you two years later to see the same person in Mr. Fee ' s at 1:30 a.m. on a Stmday morning, surrounded by strange friends and every kind of mix drink you can name? Think of your own experiences — the people you ' ve met, the job interviews, the classes, the good times and bad. Think of what you once believed in, and reevaluate it now. Have you changed? Perhaps you ' ve grown as well. — Author Unknoivn SENIOR CLASS OF 88 Valrwia Brcks April Carter Bernard Cason ]a,n,,- Cluiiuh.i ' . So some of us have survived the frightening, exciting, new, creative, stag- nating, and or cidture shocking experience of or JCSU in the prime of our lives. Thus, we can truly say that we ' ve lived. Many may argue this point. This may well not be their life. But surviving the adminis- tration system, the staff and faculty system has been a living hazing process, not a sur- realistic dream. So, in essence, if the many past exper- iences that I ' ve encountered and many of my schoolmates have encountered haven ' t caused you to matriculate (live), then you ' ve slept for a considerable amotint of time. I just hope the future for the Afro-Ameri- can isn ' t as gloomy as history predicts. In the future, let ' s remember and regurgitate our lives here at Smith. If you ' ve been asleep, wake up! The black family, commu- nity, education, and experience must be re- vived. Why not let the process of refurbish- ing began with us? (I would like to thank Ol ' JCSU for bringing me to a consciousness that I would not have been brought to any where else.) Pliilippians 4:8 Yearbook Staff H H r L 1 i iii jBJ ' --i fli 1 At this time, I and my staff can say a job ' ' well done . We- started out bumpy, but smoothed out the edges beautifully. Together we completed Bidl 88 . It was not easy. There were moments when tempers flew and words were said, but all in all, adverse feelings were set aside and the job was done. The . taff worked hard this year. Many of them were inexperienced, but .showed that determination, motiva- tion, and cooperation was the key to success. We began with a lot of odds against us and the days looked very gloomy for awhile. But quit, we did not, we pulled ourselves together and completed the task. I commend my staff for they proved themselves well. I have enjoyed my position as Editor-in-Chief it has been an unforgettable experi- ence. I would like to thank my parents for instilling in me with the perserverance to complete all my endeavors. I am especially grateful to my father, who is my inspira- tion. Whei} I felt like giving up, he always encouraged me. Sometimes he had more faith in me than I had in myself. Thanks Daddy! I love you dearly. I thank God for giving me my many talents and gidding me in a positive direction. To Mrs. Swift, much appreciation for advising the group this year. Your patience and unselfish giving has been my strength. Dr. Madrey, what can I say but thanks for keeping your faith in me. And lastly. Dr. DArmond, your encouraging words helped more than I can express. As I step down from my position, I have no regrets. It has been educational, challenging, and rewarding. Sincerely yours, YongE.
