SMITH UNIVERSITY This says it ail. This was piaced along with a matching one on both sides of Beatties Ford Road. They herald the beginning of entrance of the school and enhance the natural beauty of the campus. SANDERS HALL Built on the Campus ' West Side Sanders is a residence hall for women. It was built at the same time during the administration of Rufus R Perry, that four other buildings were erected. THE UNIVERSITY MEMORIAL UNION This Is THE most travelled place of any building on campus. Catering to not only students but faculty and staff. It has many functions such as dances, meetings, parties, weddings, recep- tions, seminars, speakers and the list goes on. Run by the indominable Mrs. Crisp the Union has been the focal point of the campus for years. It houses the University bookstore, the Post Of- fice and the Dining Hall known far and wide as the ' cafe ' . It also has a canteen for food services until the late night munchies are stopped. JACK S. BRAYBOY GYMNASIUM Named for the prolific coach and Director of Athletics Brayboy is renown as one of the hard- est gyms for any baslietball team to defeat our Golden Bulls. Sports Magazine said that it was the roudius place in the south and the Charlotte Observer called it The IVIadhouse and we love to live up to that reputation. LISTON HALL The second largest dorm on campus houses over 250 male freshmen. It was built during the great expansion period of the mid-sixties. HUMANITIES BUILDING fe As of yet the not named Humanities Building houses the English and Foreign Language Dept. The ground breaking was in October 1985 and the dedication will be soon in the Spring semes- ter of ' 87. This building joins the long line of Impressive edifices on our campus. BIDDLE HALL Biddle Hall is the oldest standing building on our campus. It was the original school building used by Rev. S.C. Alexander and Rev. Willis L. Miller the co-founders of the University. This building has been declared a historical landmark. THE CARNEGIE BLDG. This building began Its service as the schools library. After the school began expanding In the Sixties it was converted into its present use, Fi- nancial Aid and Placement. SCIENCE HALL Often called the Old Science Hall this build- ing was one of the many that was erected when Mrs. Johnson C. Smith donated hun- dreds of thousands of dollars to the then Bid- die Institute. CARTER HALL Carter Hall, which is now presently a male dormitory, is the oldest dorm on this campus. It is still one of the largest and is renown as ' Animal House ' and ' Castle Grey Skull ' . This building like Biddle Hall has been declared a hjstorial landmark. McCROREY HALL This building named after a citizen in South Carolina was the original housing unit of the theological seminary. Since the phas- ing out of the seminary it was used by Communica- tions and Urban Studies, Sociology and Drama. W. GREENFIELD HALL Named for the predessesor to Dr. Albright, this is the newest of the dormitories. When built it was the first coed dorm built by any black college in the Southeast. It now houses over 400 women and has a library, computer room, conference areas, and a typing room. ;. .. ' •- 5 Autographs Autographs . Section Editor: Catonseia Jennings - v r. : .-r ' jQHNSOrsfG SMITH UNIVERSITY To The Class of 1987: Just four aJiort years ago, we entered Johnson C, Smith University together; you as our entering freshman class and I as President of the University. Hence, it should be no surprise or secret that I feel a very special kinship with the class of 1987, for In every imaginable way you are my first class of graduates Over the years, we have witnessed, experienced and presided over many changes at our university - and your class, the class of 1987, have been the important architects and living examples of what we so proudly proclaimed as our New Era of Excellence Clearly, Smith has grown and prospered since you arrived on the campus in August, 1983. You were an important part of our phenomenal $6,000,000 Capital Campaign, you observed the construction and opening of Greenfield Hall and our new Humanities Building; you were the first class of seniors to occupy our new Banking Center, you benefited directly from the renovation of Duke, Smith, Carter and Myers Halls, and, you will one day be able to proudly proclaim to your children and grandchildren that you were a student at JCSU when the restoration of Blddle Hall began Indeed, you will have many fond and glorious memories of the days you spent at Alma Mater - and I hope that you will someday recognize and appreciate the many things we have been able to accomplish together at a time when the future of many of the nation ' s Historically black Colleges is questionable I have little doubt that our very fine faculty has prepared you well for the future. You have survived a very rigorous academic experience and you are, quite frankly, among the best educated students in the country today. However, I sincerely hope that Johnson C, Smith University has given you more than Just a good education and the means to acquire economic security and personal fulfillment for the future, I hope that we have instilled in you an almost arrogant sense of confidence about your abilities, a love for Alma Mater, a sense of pride in being a graduate of this historic institution, and a recognition of your responsibility to the community which made it possible for you to achieve your educational goals. I wish you all much success in the future You are our brightest and our best You are the best hope of our community and the nation for providing the kind of unique sensitivity. Intellectual skills and deep commitment for insuring genuine equality of opportunity for all of our citizens. May God speed you on your way - and may you ever be true to the DEAR OLD GOLD AWD BLUE With deepest respect, affection and appreciation, I am Very sincerely yours. Discoveries and not all of them enjoyable. I chose this path that I walk and the bed of coals that I treaded over I would not wish on anyone. The enemies I ' ve made and friends that I found. To put the experience of this concised six months would fill a book. But unfortunately you the consumer of our work, will probably not want to here me lament over calamities and hardships. I know that all you want is the product that we so lovingly produced. I can truly say that this has literally been the worst year of my life, a culmination if you will of the malestrom I feel I ' ve weathered here at Johnson C. Smith, ah, but that is another tragic tale I ' m sure you don ' t want to hear. I guess what I ' m trying to say in this confused collection of prose is that even though there has been tribulation galore (and GOD knows) that I would run down this arduous road again. I am bitter some may think, I am, maybe, but I am glad that I had the chance to learn to be ME and to live for no one else. I must thank some very important people that helped me in this endeavor. My mother, Mrs. Gwendolyn Stewart (Thank you Moma, I love you), my mentor Dr. RT. The same author who wrote Zooman wrote the award winning A Soldier Play . The play Zooman received an Obie an award given to off Broadway produc- tions. Zooman is a taunt drama about the murder of a young girl in a Philadelphia slum and the days after her death. The family is slowly destroyed as they try to convince several of their neighbors to speak to the police, of course to no avail. Finally in frustration the father hangs a sign on his porch that eventually leads to more violence and in the shattering climax causes the death of the youth that shot his daughter. Lysistrata Is an ancient Greek comedy. To further help it to relate the JCSU Theatre reset the comedy In West Africa. The premise that it is set on is that the men of Kumbi Saleh are fighting the tribe of Walata. The women of both tribes come together and decide not to have sex with their husbands until the men stop fighting. All the women, led by Lysistrata, hold up in the temple. The ensuing days later find the spurned men In a state of agony and confusion. In the end peace and love win out when the men stop fighting and the women return to their husbands.
