JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY Chaalotte, North Carolina 28216 To the Class of 1984: I am honored that you have chosen to dedicate this record of your final year at Johnson C. Smith University to me. During my tenure at JCSU, I foresee being close to many classes of students. However, I share with you a very special bond because you are the first class of my presidency. You leave an institution that has shared and will continue to share a legacy of excellence. The ultimate measure of the success of any institution of higher education is revealed in the progress and success of its graduates. I rest assured that you, too, will join the many Smlthites who have become standard bearers for the university and through your success you will become an ambassador for Smith throughout the nation and the world. You leave Smith at a critical point in this country ' s history. He are a nation debating the value of higher education, debating the necessity of predominately Black colleges universities, debating the purpose of foreign policy which sends our youth to settle other countries ' conflict; we are a nation debating the quality of our own technology, industry, and laborers as we face stringent foreign competition and in such debates dreams can be lost. As you leave Smith, 1 offer you a statement of advise: HOLD FAST AND NURTURE YOUR DREAMS, FOR FROM THAT NURTURING, THAT TENACITY, DETERMINATION, DREAMS ARE MADE REALITY. I wish you a progressive and successful future. 4r An Affirmative Action E ual Opportunity Inilitutton
