SMITH UNIVERSITY Charlotte, N.C. 56th Edition Theme: Going For The Gold Now we band together as Smithites, on this adventurous but tedious trek. We create our own destiny as we decide which roads to select. Though we get tired, worn and frustrated while we pursue our unanimous goal, one tries to quit but he can ' t because the fire of inspiration burns within his soul. If you opened up our heads and probed into our minds, you would see the mighty Smithites being the first to cross all lines. So if you see a prestigious Smithite, which is an honor, lo and behold, ask him where he ' s going and he ' ll say: I ' m going for the Gold By Deedra Wright .■' ' - .v:- Going For The Gold ._ The 1983-84 YearboS B ose as its theme Going t ie Gold. Seeing that 1984 is an Olympic year and we are the Golden Bulls we found this theme to be timely in many ways. Going for the Gold can be looked at in many j athletically, academically, and ambitiously. Athletically, in that the Olympic athletes will compete foTTue gum m Sarajevo in the winter and in Los Angeles in the summer; academically in the sense that we as students should Go for the Gold, in striyi flgjAjB ake the highest grades possible, and ambitiously by taking ad| opportunities in school, to be prepared to face the challenge j re woria upon graduation. Special thanks to Martin Troupe who aclii lly said the theme Going for the Gold at the beginning of the year. Smith ' s Historical Old . . . 1867 . . . Background . . . New 1984! S.G.A. At Large PHOTOS BY BEULAH TERESA WINSLOW Going For The r. ' ff Gold At JCSU JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY Chaalotte, North Carolina 28216 To the Class of 1984: I am honored that you have chosen to dedicate this record of your final year at Johnson C. Smith University to me. During my tenure at JCSU, I foresee being close to many classes of students. However, I share with you a very special bond because you are the first class of my presidency. You leave an institution that has shared and will continue to share a legacy of excellence. The ultimate measure of the success of any institution of higher education is revealed in the progress and success of its graduates. I rest assured that you, too, will join the many Smlthites who have become standard bearers for the university and through your success you will become an ambassador for Smith throughout the nation and the world. You leave Smith at a critical point in this country ' s history. He are a nation debating the value of higher education, debating the necessity of predominately Black colleges universities, debating the purpose of foreign policy which sends our youth to settle other countries ' conflict; we are a nation debating the quality of our own technology, industry, and laborers as we face stringent foreign competition and in such debates dreams can be lost. As you leave Smith, 1 offer you a statement of advise: HOLD FAST AND NURTURE YOUR DREAMS, FOR FROM THAT NURTURING, THAT TENACITY, DETERMINATION, DREAMS ARE MADE REALITY. I wish you a progressive and successful future. 4r An Affirmative Action E ual Opportunity Inilitutton Dedication This year the yearbook staff decided to dedicate the 1983-84 BULL to Dr. Albright and his family. Positive strides toward academic excellence and improvement of the total college experience are evidenced in his continuous work for this institution. Dr. Albright, we salute you and your family, and we hope that all of your future efforts to improve |ohnson C. Smith will be productive and fruitful. J( . :3V A2  ■S ' Faces And Places Elizabeth Anthony Senior Class President Follow Your Dreams . . . The Future is Now, was the theme in which we the Senior Class tried to uphold. The year was filled with laughter and tears of things to come. The Class of 84 was a class on the move to be sure. Even rival classes had to admit that the super seniors had it together. The times we have experienced at Johnson C. Smith couldn ' t be experienced at any other college. We have grown up into young men and women. We have learned that nothing is just given to us. We must work to attain what we want - to achieve the ultimate goal. The goal we achieve will be nothing if we don ' t remember who helped us to achieve it. In closing, I would like to say that the future isn ' t as far away from us now. It is a reality. The dream of walking upon the stage to accept your degree is here. What will you do with your future? It was one of the most exciting, thrilling, hard, but yet the most memorable experience in my life. When I sit down and think about the day when my reign will come to an end. It saddens me because I will miss the job very much. But even more importantly, I will miss all the courageous and dedicated students. I thank you for the good times we ' ve shared in our everyday lives, the faith that you instilled in me, the confidence you ' ve shown me, and for attending the meetings as well as scheduled events. But most of all, I thank you for respecting me as a student as well as your president. To the faculty and staff, I truly love each and every one of you. With your help we have proven that united we will stand. Once again, I thank God, my parents, the students, and the faculty and staff. Remember, no matter where I go or whatever I do, I will always be loyal to ICSU. Sincerely yours, Ervin Gourdine S.G.A. President ERVIN GOURDINE. S.G.A. Take my hand and walk with me That I may be what you ' d have me be. Grace me with your strength to make it through To accomplish the things you have given me to do. Teach me to stretch out on faith more, And fill my basket from Heaven ' s grocery store. Let me not misrepresent you. But do only those things you would have me to. Let me not be disobedient or unjust. But to leave all my complaints in your trust. And, oh Father, if the sun does not shine today, Help me to see beauty anyway. If things do not all go my way, Distrub my mind so that I will pray That I enter not into temptation But keep my eyes on salvation. And help me to remember always That I am not in this world to stay. But am passing through as your child - Only to stay for a little while. And Father, before I close. Help me to help others. Help me to get along here in this place; Keep me in your love and saving grace. Help me to keep this prayer in my mind - To look towards you through all times; For I realize that I am just one. And my journey towards Heaven has just begun. Help me, oh Lord, as I pray. To serve you more everyday; To strive to do my best, And let my Heavenly Father do the rest. He now resides in Chicago, 111. He has been instrumental in the Operation PUSH campaign. Through this organization, he has successfully pioneered boycotts to gain recognition and equality for black businesses and corporations. Recently, he has gained much publicity because of his quest for the 1984 Democratic Presidential nomination. Many leading Black political figures are not supporting him in his endeavor, however, he is still striving. He is truly an outstanding Black American and leading political figure. Jessica feels that with a lot of practice that she will make it. She stated that her inspiration came from her brother William and her mother. Her brother William was a football player and she raced him often and came close to beating him several times. And as for her mother. Jessica says. I don ' t like to disappoint her. In that, she hopes that her mother is there to support her and make her performance better. FORMAL WEAR HOAGLAND y 3205 FREEDOM DRIVE FREEDOM MALL :harlotte. n, c 2S208 (704) 392 0886 I thank Gary Hoagland, manager of Mitchell ' s Formal Wear, who allowed me and my two constituents to represent their store by modeling their clothing. I would personally recommend their service to anyone. I hope the next young man will enjoy his year as much as I have enjoyed mine. Once again, thank you and may God bless and forever keep you. Sincerely, Walter McAllister The Life At Smith photos By Larry Murehison In the makings of the 1983-84 Going For The Gold yearbook, I came across a lot of trials and tribulations. As you can see, I ' ve come through the hard times. There were days when it seemed as if there wasn ' t any hope left. Then my friend Scipio would say, have faith in God. I did have faith in Him. Whenever there were times of disappointment and heartache in which the future looked bleak, I ' d look towards the Lord and the future wouldn ' t look so foreign anymore. This year ' s book was produced by people who put their hearts in to the makings. Everyone on my staff that stuck by me made me feel good. This year, the staff has produced the makings of the 1983-84 Going For The Gold. Even with so many make-up dates for pictures we survived. I hope next year ' s staff won ' t have as much trouble as we did with getting participation and cooperation from students, faculty, and staff. I feel we did a splendid job and I ' d like to give special thanks to my mother and father. They not only gave me support from a distance, but they gave me the courage to go on. They told me never give up on what you start and never be a quitter. A special thanks also to my executive board, Scipio, Angela, Sabrina, and Lana. As for my staff, I couldn ' t have done it without you. I haven ' t forgotten you either Mr. James. You have been a great advisor. Thanks all of you for standing by me and the 1983-84 BULL. Hey, we did it and yes I am proud of it all. 1 also need to thank all my photographers, you all were the greatest. How can I say enough thanks to my artists? Thanks fellows for all the great work. My most special thanks to Mr. [ohnell Kinsey. Thanks for your outstanding photos. Without you we wouldn ' t have had so many great photos of the faculty and student body. Sincerely, Beulah Winslow Editor-in-Chief We ' ve all been together for a whole year now. It ' s an indignation to part from our nearest friends and lovers.
