With the situation of today ' s world, many institutions especially private black institutions are facing a doubtful and challenging future. No one knows the destination of these youngsters but the good Lord above. We must maintain our institutions by taking advan- tage of our opportunities now while we are students and by giving our support when we become Alumni. What ' s up? The location was Raliegh, N. C. The day began with a wet, rainy march from Shaw University down the street to the state capital where more chants were shouted and the program began. Each S. G. A. President and University Queen spoke on behalf of the institution he or she represented. Mr. Terry Bellamy, former J. C. S. U. instructor, was the guest speaker. His speech was on time in relation to the problems we as black students face in keeping our historically black institu- tions up to par. The rain cut down on the attendance, but those students that attended really enjoyed it and most if not all of them are anticipating next year ' s Black College Day. Alumni Workshop A Touch Of Class Moa ■ - ■ . • Student Government Association Fellow students: I am extremely grateful to have had the privilege to actively serve the Student Government Association over the past four years. I am even more so thankful to have served as president this year. Many thanks are due to those students, faculty, staff, and administrators who helped to achieve the goals of my administration. Now that I have been humble to the few who supported S.G.A. I feel it is only appropriate that I be frank to the majority that did not. For too long the students at Johnson C. Smith have sat, and passively allowed the University ' s bureaucratic structure to hinder constructive progress. Blinded by the threat of Administrative structure, the students have been bluffed into believing that the University administrators are omnipotent beings, so endowed by the Board of Trustees that we must humble ourselves to their delight of complacency. Every year we the students, realizing the signs of obsolete and inappropriate practices of the University, sit back and willingfully allow these wrongs to constantly revive. When will we become conscious as well as responsive to the fact that the students are the most powerful body of the University family, when assembled as one united front? We are mindful of the many corporate contributions, federal grants, alumni contributions, and other means of institutional funding. Yet, we should never forget that our investment is significant, and we should neither allow those whose positions are in a service capacity to the institution to forget it either. Respectfully, Milton Ray Wiggins Student Government Association President (From left to right) Celia Gayle Robinson - RECORDING SECRETARY; Ervin Gourdine - VICE-PRESIDENT; Shelia Tyson - PARLIAMENTARIAN; Thomas Smallwood - TREASURER Wanda Wilson - CORRESPONDING SECRETARY. Each year, the student body elects three student members to the Board of Trustees, the govern- ing body of the school and its functions. These three members represent the students and speak on their behalf during the fall and spring meetings of the Board. Fashion Show By The Zodiac Club The Union Program Board spon- sored a Fashion Show in the auditorium following their Christmas Tree Trim- ming in the Lobby of the Union. Clothes of many different styles were modeled by young men and women with style, grace, beauty, and charisma. The evening was very entertaining and enjoyable. The models were members of the Zodiac Club. It has been quite an experience being Miss University Yearbook 1982-83, a lot of hard work I must add, but it was all worth it. We really worked hard as a staff and stuck together as a family. I have never worked with such a group of dedicated people in all of my life. That is why this years ' book A TOUCH OF CLASS is going to be the best ever, at least that is my opinion. May next year ' s queen have all the luck in the world. I wish her much success and to the staff, may your warmth and love shine on. From me to you, MISS UNIVERSITY YEARBOOK Yearbook Staff Bernard As a member of the yearbook staff, I welcome you to our university. The unity and pride that went into this yearbook is truly an experience in black culture. The art in this yearbook is only the beginning of the work that will be a great asset in the years to come. A group of these students desired to establish a more intimate contact between themselves than their classroom study allowed. Eight of these young men were registered in the undergraduate schools of the university: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelly, Robert Harold Ogle, and Mr. C.C. Poindexter were registered in the graduate school of Agriculture. These young men decided to form a social studies club of the social and literary nature. They held discussions on literature, music and on a course of study determined by the membership. During the first meeting of the social studies club in the 1906-1907 school year, the idea of a fraternity was brought up. On October 23, 1906 the name Alpha Phi Alpha was brought up by Mr. George Biddle Kelly after it was worked out by Mr. Callis and Mr. Jones. On December 4, 1906, the name Alpha Phi Alpha Society is now known as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. This date is now observed as Founders Day. THE MEMBERS OF ALPHA OMICRON Anthony R. Upward Bound at Donald Bowen Director Otis Roberson Counselor Upward Bound is a precollege program for the marginal student who exhibits exceptional potential for academic achievement. The primary goal of the program is to focus on skill building and personal growth that will enable students to experience greater success in their postsecondary activities. This program is committed to work with those students who, from all indications, probably will not achieve success unless some nonclassroom assistance is give n to them. Students enter the program in the sophomore year of high school and continue through the senior year and the summer immediately after high school graduation. Special Services Program Special Services is a program designed to work with a limited number of freshmen and sophomores whose previous academic performance and cultural exposure indicate need for supportive services in order to enable them to achieve successfully at the college level. I have had to put up with false accusations, endless nights filled with hard work, and there have been days when I have had to enter my classes unprepared with incomplete work. Nonetheless, I made it through it all. I really thank God for letting me experience such challenges as these. I believe these challenges that I have endured will prepare me for the many hardships that I will encounter in the near future. Each page that I have completed will never be forgotten. They all had a very special meaning. I felt a great joy in preparing these accomplishments helped me to develop a deep sense of dignity and pride. In addition to this, I would like to thank my staff: Tracey, Dina, Regina, Fatima, Velma, Valencia, Debra, Keith, Lana, Janet, Angela, Sabrina, Beulah, Keith, Lonnie, Dexter, Bernard, Wanda, Shelia, Brenda, Reggie, Maury, Steven, Reggie, and Sylvester my right hand. Furthermore, I would like to thank my advisor, Mr. Rogers, who has been a big help with the editing of the artwork. Doctor Gaston and Mrs. Ross who helped me in gaining a better understanding of the business aspect, I thank you. I would also like to thank my work study employer, Miss Alexander. She has been a true friend. She has given me the friendship of a loving mother. I really thank her and everyone else that supported me during this year. Then there is my photographer, Mr. Johnell Kinsey. I really appreciate all that you have done for me. Without your loyalty, understanding, and promptness, I would not have had a yearbook. I am very thankful for everything, and I know that next year ' s staff will be more than glad to use you. Sincerely, Walter A. McAllister Editor-in-Chief WALSWOBTH PUBLISHING COMPANY III I ■
