The Union Program Board started the year off with a bang. Their cool out on the Block was a project well worth their effort. Hungry students turned out in record numbers and found relief in Ms. Crisp ' s cooking. The Few The Proud . . . September 28, 1981 was the first Black College Day in the State of North Carolina. That also marked the Act-1 dramatization of the Black experience in America . This event was staged on the streets and lawns of the State Capitol in Raleigh. N.C. where black college actors from across the state gathered to share their knowledge on Saving the Black Colleges . Many students from Johnson C. Smith attended the convention. Over 50% of the blacks emerge from the colleges and universities each year with degrees in doctoring, civil leadership and business. We the black race, must not retire. We must continue to strive for an education and become a positive factor to our race. There are not many black colleges, therefore, we must support these symbols of equality and opportunity. It is our obligation to save the few, and proud, black colleges. The Black Colleges A Special Tribute To A Wonderful Lady Ms. Joyce Crisp, Union Director Ms. Joyce Crisp, Union Program Director, has been at Johnson C. Smith since 1965. She has served for the past 16 years seemly enjoying each and everyday. Ms. Crisp is alw ays looking for new and exciting events for the students to have for themselves as w ell as the community. Because she is a mother (Nancy), she understands and helps us all along. We, the Yearbook Staff, Join the Entire Student Body In Saying Thank You For Being, Little Ms. Crisp. We Love You . . . When we started out on our journey August 20, 1978 our family number 497. now after four years our family has dwindled down to 199. Yes, some of us have succumbed, but some of us have survived. For those of us who have presevered the rewards have been plentiful. If to you the Graduating Class of 1982, I many leave but one thought, let it be this; Two roads diverge in a woods and I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference. Lana Boulware wonders if she is on the right line. In times like these, I should think people would strive to get as much education as possible. Education is something you will always want and need. It has been said that Education without Salvation is Damnation, this is true, but remember that God helps those who help themselves. Arthur L. Wilson My four years here at Johnson C. Smith University have been very fruitful. The trials and tribulations that I met on the way has made me a much stronger person. I found my stay here challenging and very educational. Because education plays a very important part in our daily lives, and we must prepare to meet these daily Challenges head on. Thank You Johnson C. Smith University for giving me the opportunity to enhance my knowledge from all levels, and I thank God for giving me the drive that I need to keep striding. Willie Bodrick Who ' s Who Among American If it had not been for the love, guidance, and support of my family I would not be who I am today. I have enjoyed my years here at Johnson C. Smith University because it has taught me many things but, mostly that wisdom keeps you safe and that it is the advantage of knowledge. Melody R. Donald Education is the Key to Success . Like most of us I too owe my success to my dear mother and family, who have given me the courage to press onward to reach higher heights. I have developed spiritually, intellectually, and socially at Johnson C. Smith University. I will always be greatful to the many friends and instructors who helped keep me on the right road. To the Smith Family keep the faith in God, and be Happy. Rhonda D. Bridges Johnson C. Smith is our home, a home of knowledge and maturity. In order for our home to continue to grow we must give of ourselves the enthusiasm, creativity, and hope that will allow it to flourish forever. Stephanie M. McLeod Success is meaningless unless you have someone to share it with. Being listed among Who ' s Who is truly an honor and is the result of a motivation I acquired as a child along vwith continuous encouragement. Therefore, I must dedicate my accomplishments to my mother and grandmother who have encouraged me through- out the years, also to my Smith family and fnends, but most of all to Jesus Christ who made it all possible. Thank you. J. C. S. U. for three very challenging and rewarding years. Odyssey Leach Who ' s Who isn ' t a reward for glamour or self-satisfaction, it is one attained through hard work and determination. I would like to thank J. C. Smith for giving me my share of hard work and my loving mother who taught me the ground work for determination. Rosalyn Webb !!y.-. Vivian Byrd in any game there ' s always a loser and there ' s always a winner. I learned a long time ago, he who wins is the one who wanted it the most. If the mind can conceive, the body can achieve. But when the body has achieved great success, remain forever humble, for the ones you met going up the ladder, you will meet coming down. Smith so very close to your dinner hour, he requested that I do three things to keep peace m the family: stand up and be recognized, speak up and be heard, and iit down and bo appreciatea. I plan to do jusi ihat. You honor me with this op- portunity to address the 1985 class of Johnson C. Smith. I wanted to be with you today as you start your college career, because I have a dream for North Carolina, and I want you to be my partners. Dunng the 114 years of this university ' s existence, it has given so much for so long, to so many, for so little. This university has a legacy of producing outstan- ding students, many of whom are leaders of this na- tion today. You walk in paths made by outstanding alumni such as: The Kt. Rev. John Hurst Adams, Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal ( ' hurch; Pettis Norman, former all-pro foot- ball player with the Dallas Cowboys and now a banker and businessman in Dallas, Texas; Eva Clayton, former assistant secretary. Depart- ment of Natural Resources and Community Develop- ment; the Kev. Bob Walton, county commissioner here in Mecklenburg, and the Honorable Richard Erwin, federal district judge, ap- pointed by me to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. These people made it Gov. Hunt Visits JCSU Gov. Hunt because they beheved that as Jesse Jackson says, If you can conceive it, and believe it, you can achieve it. A lot of people ha ve a lot of hopes for your success. Many of your parents are sacrific- ing everything to provide you this opportunity. As your Governor, I ask you not to waste this chance to achieve. You are very fortunate to have parents and relatives who have helped you reach this height in life. Many of your friends are not as for- tunate as you are and will not enter college this year, even though many of them would like to. As I reflect on your poten- tials, I am reminded of the words of a great poet, James Russell Lowell, who said, Not failure, but low aim is crime. Do not be a victim of aiming too low. I challenge you to aim high . Set your aim on becoming the president, governor, judge, superinten- dent, owner of businesses and farms. It is so easy to say, No I can ' t do it. But students like you will say, 1 know it is tough, but I must continue and I ' m not going to let anybody turn me around. My dream for North Carolina is not just a good state, but the best state. We ' ve made progress m reducing our infant mortali- ty rate. But we can do better. We ' ve made progress in our test scores in the public schools — they ' re at or above the national average — but we can do better. We ' re work- ing hard to stop young peo- ple from dropping out of high school — but we can do a lot better. I want this class to be my partner as volunteers to help some child or to help your classmates who are having problems with their school work. I want this cla.ss to be a class known for booking rather than boogying, foi- putting hope in their brains ( rather than dope m their ' veins, to be a panner in help- ing us change the fact that today in 66 out of 100 coun- ties we do not have a black attorney. I want you to help change the fact that in North Carolina 80 of our 100 coun- ties do not have a black doc- tor. I want you to be my partner in making sure that more-than U i of the coUegt students are registered to vote, and that they go to the polls on election day. Because these are crucial times for making the voice of hope and progress heard in this state and this nation. Bobby Kennedy once said, Some people see things and wonder why — I sec things | and wonder why not. That ' s the question I hope you 11 ask. And I hope you ' ll adopt as your goal the vision that Thomas Wolfe expressed: To every man hi.s chance, to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining golden opportunity — to every man the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him — this, seeker, is the promise of America. While attending Morehouse College in Atlanta he became active in the civil rights movement in the South, helping found the Committee on Appeal for Human Rights and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee Bond w as elected in 1965 to the Georgia House of Representatives, but w as barred from taking his seat by legislators who objected to his statements on the war in Vietnam. Despite winning two special elections in 1966, he still did not take his seat until 1967 after a Supreme Court decision that the Georgia legislature had erred in refusing him his place. He eventually served four terms in the House and, in November of 1974, was elected to the State Senate, where he now serves. Bond was co-chairperson of the Georgia Loyal National Democratic Delegation, an insurgent group, at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The Loyal Democrats were successful in unseating the regular, hand-picked Georgia deleaation. Bond was nominated for Vice President, but withdrew his name from consideration because of his age. Julian Bond serves on the Boards of Directors of the Delta Ministry Project of the National Committee of Churches; Robert F. Soon I calmed and realized tfiat I only wanted to do everything possible to represent my organization well. Like all things, there is a beginning and an end and so has my reign. The profits from my investment have been many. In closing I want to thank the staff for their support and love. Since being elected to the editorship last April, I ' ve had a large problem filling an order for 1400 books. Unique, all color pages, and at least 4 pictures of everybody. Well I did my best as you can see we got the 1400 books, some color pages and as many of your faces as possible. Unique, indeed because it ' s this years ' book and 1982 will never come this way again. Thank You for letting me be your editor, friend, and classmate. I hope you will enjoy this production we worked hard and hope that you will keep in mind that we ' re just students like yourself, mistakes will be found and some pictures not to your liking however I ' m sure you will be pleased overall. Special thanks to my staff, just to mention a few Wanda, Diann, Lonnie, Dexter, Michelle, Lana, Sylvester, Walter, Angela, Beulah, Sabrina, and my favorite artist in the world REGGIE. Thanks goes to special people on the outside they helped me through all the rough spots Linda, Phyllis and James. Thanks Anthony and Sarah who taught me all I know but left just enough unknown so that I would have to do it my way. Hey that ' s what this book is all about. I made it because of YOU.
