Mr. James Cochrane, or perhaps I should say Pops , is a 17 year veteran of Smith. Pops , who on November 6, 1979, celebrated his 8.5th birth- day, has spent 59 years (maybe more) working. He says he enjoys working and moving around. Pops , a devoted and diligent employee here at Smith, came to us in September of 1963. He ' s the devoted and loving husband of Mrs. Emula Peacock Cochrane. Where in the world did the name Pops come from? No one knows. However, some believe it started very soon after his arrival. He has found many friends because of his cheerful smiles and willingness to talk. Therefore, we, the Bull Staff of 1980, proudly dedicate the 52nd edition of the Bull , to Mr. James Cochr ane. We are proud to have our very own Pops Away From Home . . . and Pops - WE LOVE YOU! You and I are one, sharing, caring, and helping one another. The local campaign will seek $300,000 in endowment for faculty salaries and scholarships, $700,000 for a student health center, and $1 million for an instructional facility in humanities. The Center for Humanities and the Arts will house programs in communication, music, art, drama, literature, religion and philosophy, and will provide studio, gallery, exhibition and rehearsal space. An auditorium for the perform- ing arts, seating 1,600, will be added later for concert, theatrical and speaking purposes. The health center will be located n a new four-dormitory cluster door facility in an amphitheatre nearer the student population and setting for commencement, athletic easily accessible to neighboring cit- contests and special events; in- izens, who will share services not creased recreational and parking otherwise available. areas, a through artery for traffic. Other priorities include an out- landscaping and beautification. Reaching Our Potential A decade into our second century, the record of this important and courageous institution is tar out of proportion to its limited resources. Now, in the years ahead, we must reach for our full potential. If we are to have the new excel- lence we en ' ision. we must find support and understancf ing equal to the new expectations ot both young black people and the society in which they can play new and important roles. Wt are not a University in crisis. We are solvent and competent. But we are increasingly in com- petition with tax-supported institutions and wealthier private colleges tor faculty, students and dollars. The impossible dreams of our predecessors are the practical plans of today. It is an exciting time tor all of us — a time worthy of our best ettorts. Smith University is undertaking a major 10-year, .$20-million campaign to accomplish a long-range educational plan instituted during the first six years of Dr. VVilhert Greenfield ' s presidency. We approach this campaign in a solvent financial state. The use of sound management techniques and careful budget planning has produced seven consecutive years of operating in the black. Our purpose is not very complicated. We want to nurture an environment in which students will learn how to learn, and grow into the habit of learning, not only in college but throughout their lives. I Geo acCB UBE [ QJCUE BUE(717 C G G c c mm i llccle mm u c c ADMINISTRATION Winston Churchill once said, I am always ready to learn, but I do not always like being taught. It is this fact that demands that we take this time and opportunity to pay a special tribute to our educators. We come to JCSU to continue our mental growth but often we tend to believe that we can do it alone. It is the people in the following pages who must make us realize that growth is a sharing thing. It is learned together, and shared together. These people are responsible for our learning. They learn to tolerate and appreciate us as we also learn to t olerate and appreciate them. It is this tolerance and appreciation that engulfs our theme . . . . . . TOGETHER WE GROW! . . . This quote ia quite descriptive of my feelings for our great class of 1980, and also for the lohnson C. Smith family as a whole. We cannot forget that we, the Class of 1980, made history in 1976 as the largest freshman class ever to enter the boundaries of this great institution. We set out to do many things, many of which were not accomplished, but that did not stop us. To my fellow seniors, I would like to say: Reach for the highest goals, have faith in God and yourself, then nothing will be impossible for you to achieve. There is one last thought I wish to leave with you: For every star that falls to earth a new one glows; For every dream that fades away a new one grows. When things are not what they would seem. You MUST keep following your dream; So while my heart is still believing, I ' ll say goodby Sincerely, Charies M. The .squad was very well conditioned and played their opponents hard. The Bull ' s |)rogram was bent on teaching, on foundation-laying, on establishing discipline and respect The Golden Bulls is a team of potential champions. With a little hard work anil sacrifice, their day will come! Sports Editor- Dyrol Prioleai Alfred has the physical tools to play profes- sional ball, noted coach Wylie Harris. He has run a 4.7 in the 40 and has bench pressed 465 lbs. Alfred is terrifying because the man is so quick for his size, pointed out assistant line coach Otis Stroud. That 99 he is wearing is the number of solo tackles he is shooting for this year. Wring ' s speed and jarring hits are born out by his team high seven fumble recoveries last year. When you crack the man as hard as Alfred can, you ' ll see that ball cough up enough times, laughed Grover Covington who played next to him on the line last year Wring also managed to block a punt last season. Nicknamed Hercules after the Greek man of strength. Wring also patterns his life after the same Greek ideals. The man Hercules used his strength to help others and do right, reflected the senior lineman. My mother has been a strong influence in much the same way and I intend to follow their steps. Alfred will be playing weakside defensive end rather than tackle this year. I ' ve got more responsibilities to discipline myself, he ex- plained. 1 can ' t charge in wild, I ' ve got to read the blocks and hold my ground until the play develops. Don ' t worry about Alfred on the weak side, added Stroud. Here will get his tackles and anyone foolish enough to try running at him all day is welcome to try. -.-. _■ . - • ' ■ ' ' -— - ■ .-- ' ' ■■ -■■ CX ' - ' i-: ' ' %:A ' WE CAME TO PLAY! ■■ TF ' i S M V jfMi J Captain Sidney Montgomery When the athletic council hired Wylie E. He is really like a godfather to us, remarked linebacker Quinton Miles. You respect him for his honesty and discipline. Harris understands you as a man first and a player second, added tight end Varian Bristow. Everybody likes him - he doesn ' t lead you on. Quiet strength best describes Harris, noted Observer reporter Glenn Rollins. He ' s low key, but you can sense a tremendous amount of drive and energy. My job is to teach, commented Harris to an Observer reporter after the 1-10 season. We will take the time to master the skills, gain the confidence in ourselves and learn to be a winner. For his efforts, the CIAA sportswriters named him Coach of the Year while the CIAA coaches have picked the Bulls to win the CIAA south title in 1979-80. WE HAD A GREAT SEASON ONLY 1 LOST IN THE BRAYBOY MADHOUSE (Hell ' s Kitchen] Most exiciting game in town? Want to see the most exciting basketball show in town these days? Head over to Brayboy Gym, or The Madhouse. as they call it around Johnson C. Smith University, and watch the Golden Bulls against anybody. Now, I ' m not going to tell you that Smith could go out and beat North Carolina and Duke on a good night — even Bulls ' Coach Bob Moore will admit .su ch dreams are a bit far-fetched. But the point is, imder Moore ' s lucid leadership, the Bulls ate playing fast- paced, exciting basketball. ' We call it run-and-gun around here, and the closest thing to it in style is professional basketball, which we can ' t even see on television in Charlotte. Of course, the Bulls have always played that way offensively, but now Moore has them making the smart pass instead of gunning shots from 30 feet, and playing better defense each game. It all adds up to a winning program (jCSU ' s voung squad has a 13-5 record this season|. high-scoring games and a slam dunk at the end of virtually everv Bulls ' fast break. This isn ' t a swipe at UNCC or Davidson, programs which compete at a considerably higher level — it ' s simply a statement of fact. Night in and night out. Smith basketball. It is indeed time for joy, as this edition of The Bull comes to an end. My last two years as Editor-in-Chief (1978-80) will forever remain a special part of me. I met you. You met me. We grew together. I thank you (the family) for believing in me, and for giving me your support. My staff and I have worked hard on this production. We hope you have enjoyed it. A singer is no good without a song. They both need each other. Without the aid of the 1980 Bull Staff, this production would not have existed. (They really did all the work!) Therefore, I extend my Heart-Filled Thanks to: (take a deep breath . . . ) Willie , Maxie , Rick , Mike , Deniece , Jackie , Ricardo , Stephanie , lantha , Rosalyn , Tracey , Rhonda , Kenny , Elaine , Brenda , Darrell , Gracie , Priscilla , Wanda , Cynthia , Sondra , Sally , GG , Frankie J. , Norman , and last but not least, a very special thanks to Chris , for adding that SPECIAL TOUCH. I thank GOD for life, and for you. It was beautiful. I love you all . . . Someone saw something in you once. That ' s partly why you are where you are today. It could have been a thoughtful parent, a perceptive teacher, a demanding drill sergeant, an appreciative employer, or just a friend who dug down in his pocket and came up w ith a few bucks Whoever it was, had the kindness and the foresight to bet on your future. Those are two beautiful qualities that separate the human being from the orangutan. In the next 24 hours, take 1 minutes to write a grateful note to the person who helped you. You ' ll keep a wonderful friendship alive Matter of fact, take another 1 minutes to give somebody else a break. Who knows? Someday you might get a nice letter. It could be one of the most gratifying messages you ever read ■RT, United Technologies Autographs: AUTOGRAPHS st . ' B WALSWORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY
