SMITH UNI T;RSITY Yearbook Allocations Fall Way Short By Tim Jones The University has allotted $13,000, this year for the 1978-79 yearbook. The- Bull, approximately $4,000 less than the estimated cost of the annual. According to Anothy Hayes, the yearbook editor, the funds supplied by the school may go up to $14,000, depending on student enrollment, which has not yet been totalled. Each student pays ten dollars in tuition fees for the yearbook. The Student Government (SGA), in its last meeting, proposed an allocation of $1,000 to be added to the yearbook funds. With the probable additions to the budget, Hayes said approximately $2,000 will still be needed to meet the$16,880 figure, given to him by the publishing company. This balance will be obtained by profits from advertisements and fund-raising projects that the yearbook staff will sponsor, such as socials and dances. The staff will also ask for donations from community organizations and individuals, Hayes said. Student ads will be available at one half the price of business ads. Hayes explained that student ads, under the topic, Express Yourself , can be purchased by groups or individuals who want a space reserved in the yearbook for their pictures. Group pictures may have no more than ten people. The price for student ads is fifty dollars per page. Hayes said he is optimistic about this year ' s yearbook production, in spite of the monetary problems. He expects to have a basic book with about sixteen color pages. There will be no special effects, tints or elaborate cover. Still I expect the yearbook to be better than last year ' s . Hayes commented. ' This just means that everyone will have to work harder. Last year, the total yearbook cost was .$-20,000; $7,000 more than initial $1.3,000 appropriation. Eventually, the university was able to provide more funds for publication of the hook. There is no guarantee that the university will provide additional funds this year, and Ha.yes urges the student body to take an active part in eliminating If important — How important.. . . . Is a Yearbook Production? Anthony Hayes, 78-79 Yearbook editor this financial crisis. The Bull is used to recruit students to Smith, he stated. This should bring concern from the university as well as the student body. Hayes said he regards the yearbook situation as a test of student awareness and concern versus student apathy. The 1979 Bull Staff was the recipient of several dif- ficulties, concerning the 79 Production. In spite of a cut-back in our allotted budget for the production, we continued to produce the Bull . This obstacle placed a heavy burden on our creativity. A lot of things that we wanted to present through this medium were left behind, due to a lack of funds. However, what we have prepared for you is a pictorial of life at Johnson C. Smith University 1978-79. You are the main characters. The setting is in Charlotte, N.C. Academically, Emotionally, Professionally, and Personally, the school a person goes to has a definite influence on his or her life. Each University has a personality of its own. That per- sonality is reflected in the personalities of its students, faculty, ad- ministrators, alumni, and trustees. For the Class of 79 , Johnson C. Smith University has been a positive contributor in helping them become the proud men and women that they are today. With the learnings that they have received, they stand prepared today, for that glorious step into tomorrow ! Their main objective is to strive forward to radiate the uni- versal awareness, characteristic of our University. The sky is indeed the limit! Johnson C. Smith our own . . , for we are the true reflections of this beautiful University. The Bull has lived through fifty years of recording memories (except for a break between 1936 and 1946). Stepping Into Tomorrow marks the beginning of a new era. With this new beginning, we see a massive flow of positive attitudes, creating progressive ideas. We see the mental collaboration between students, faculty members, and administrators, that constitute a University. So step with us, as we get into the beautiful unfoldment of the 1978- 79 school year, at Johnson C. Smith University. Perhaps we can relate to the linguistics of Mr. George Clinton (recording artist), in saying: To each his or her reach ... and if we don ' t cop its not ours to have . . . but we ' ll be reaching for you . . . because WE LOVE YOU — J.C. )t Mabm 01 0nv resiibent $ a f %1, ■ ■f ' i- ii u i l-t ' tfc.«agg Dr. m bert Greenfield President , ' TM nillngly (. ...vac ■• -. _ .- .« ■ J r ' 1 ) t RrX} ' n 1 J - 1 1 B Hl l ' , ■s w Dr. Matthew J. The Sophomore Oass at Johnson C. Smith University has planted a seed. Whether the seed will produce depends totally on the individuals, but if God gives us Grace to cultivate this seed and soil it will produce a crop that has never been produced here at Smith. Planting a rightful seed is a challenge to all mankind. Go out and search, for you may find the proper place, season and seed. Plant it carefully and watch it as it may GROW for eternity. N.C.. majoring in Sociology. I have enjoyed working on the yearbook staff. I met a lot of new people and learned a lot from them. To me the yearbook staff is one big happy famify. We need your support for more money to publish a better book. People are quick to say what should be in color. Lend us your support to make it possible. Kim Crisp ? I ' m a Freshman, from Salisbury, N.C., majoring in Sociology. I would like to stress a strong emphasis on unity. 1 believe that we will be able to achieve great goals as a family. But, if for some reason, we manage to fall aprt, it will be because we lack unity. Patricia Peek Rhonda Bridges Being Black. I have learned to cope with things Black people must go through. Being a Smithite, I have learned to accept only those things I cannot change, but there is one thing I can say I have enjoyed, and that is being Business Manager for the 79 Bull. Even though all my proposals were turned down by the administra- tion, I still tried to do my job. I refused to quit because I was turned down once. We as Smithites must learn to carry on, no matter what. Things are going to change. Our time is coming soon. Maxie McRae, 21 Dillon. S.C. I Ml J Sophomore, from Charleston, S.C., majoring in Communications and Business. I was born under the zodiac sign of Taurus. We as stu- dents must become more aware of things going on in today ' s society, as well as on campus. We must become active participants in the better- ment of our school and community. I Dare You — to become a more ac- tive person than you are now! Sarah-Elaine Jenkins Being here at Smith has taught me a lot about life. 1 strongly feel that Smith is a serious University to learn to deal with societies problems. You leam to be in control of yourself and your actions. Love ya, DeMarkus Calhoun (D.C.) Being President of the Pan-Hellenic Council, for the year 1978-79. has been a rewarding experience, (in a way . . . ) I learned that the administration was not for the betterment of the students. This past semester, the ad- ministration pulled the wool over the Greek ' s eyes. Being Greek and being a mem- ber of the Pan-Hellenic Council, you can change this unfortunate mishap. You can do this by uniting as one, and working for the same goal. My last remarks is that next year — become active with the counci!. If this is done, 1 assure you that your voices will be heard and the situations will change. Grease for Peace, and Smile — Somebody Loves Ya! Kenny Smiley Myers Being a student at Smith. I feel I owe the University something that only I as an in- dividual can give. Growing up in one of the three all Black communities in the U.S.. and going to a Black University. I feel that we, as Blacks, should work together to achieve higher goals in life. The things that our forefather did to give us an opportunity in life should be repaid by our taking advantage of every open door, and learning to strive forward. (Even when doors are shut in your face) Dyrol Byron Prioleau Lawnside. N.J. I ' m a Junior, from Greenville, S.C., majoring in Early Childhood Education. I have thoroughly en- joyed working with the yearbook staff, as your Organizations Editor for the 79 Bull . During these past few months, with the greatly ap- preciated help of members of the yearbook staff, I have gained much experience, knowledge, and sincere dedication for the yearbook. As we think back to our matriculation of old J.C.S.CJ., we think about the problems, experiences, decisions, and moods, all of which the Class of 1 979 played a vital role in shaping. The Class of 1 979 will undoubtedly stand among the top in participation shown, support given, and the continued spirit of professional ethics to which we ' ve brought to this institution. As graduates, we ' ve proven that we can stand the test of time, attain the knowledge offered and capture the spirit of determinism necessary in determining our destiny and fortunes. We are proud and thankful for our parents and those individuals who foresaw a day when we could stand amont the reigns of intellect. My fellow classmates, as we depart these boundaries of Johnson C. Smith University, where knowledge and skill is attained; where experiences and friendships are eternally bound; where purpose, courage, genuineness, usefulness, work, thought, and faith — established a building as in the days of Solomon, so that we may forever be strong and true to the aims of God. With this type of spirit in our hearts, a diploma in our hands, and a right step forward — our future labors and aspirations are almost assured. Finally, these words of thought: It may seem as though we didn ' t accomplish a great deal or contribute significantly to some purpose or cause, but what we did, we did our best, and may God forever bless. Andrew Ladd Senior Class President 254 After six months of photographing, lay-outs, deadlines, and requisitioning, we bring this edition of the Bull to an end. I thank the fam ily for granting me the opportunity to become Editor-in-Chief of the 79 Production. One noteworthy change was the elimination of excessive copy. The dialogues can be remembered. A frozen or captured moment is a priceless item. The Bull is a collection of moments, that have been captured at Johnson C. Smith CJniv. within a particular year. Through this medium, the wondermeat, the snowfights, the work-study lines, blockology, canteenology, and of course, sleepology — can all be remembered. A yearbook is not put together by one man with one mind. It is completed with the collaboration of a group of minds working toward the same cause. In light of this, I give a very special thanks to the 79 Bull Staff. Without their unending assistance, this production would not have been possible. Rick is to be commended for his timely advice. I thank God for helping me to hold on. Mistakes, as always, will be discovered as you scan these pages. If your name has been mispelled, misplaced, misused, or unintentionally abused, we apologize. We have tried to create a publication that will be informative as well as entertaining. We have structured this production on a level that every student can understand and enjoy. With the closing of this production, in the tradition of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, I speak of knowledge and say: Take some elsewhere — and let it come back to you. I thank you, and may God bless you.
